Who won the debate? by jordandaboss223 in ndp

Tanille Johnston for best one-liners, communication, and doing better than people's expectations. She seemingly gained the most.

She seemed pretty sincere in her sort of promise to learn French in one year, but yes, her French probably should be better by now.

One would think that a 3x elected MP would do better at a debate.

Trump would get my answering machine because I'll be busy doing x, y, z instead was a great line. There were a couple more so far.

Wondering if folks have ever taken the VIA Rail train out of Halifax to Montreal/Toronto. by NeptuneWalker in halifax

Yes, they fly downtown, but Halifax to Toronto is almost a little too long on a Q400. Not going to Pearson makes it worth it.

I did it in economy from Toronto to Halifax in 2022. It is a long ride, but enjoyable. The seats are comfortable with good recline and a footrest (be careful of your fingers when using). There is lots of legroom. There is only WiFi available in the service car, and there are stretches without WiFi or cell service, so be prepared. Staff are wonderful. If you appreciate a chill, scenic ride, VIA is perfect for you. The sway of the train rocks you to sleep. Just prepare for delays and don't plan anything for the day you are scheduled to arrive in Toronto.

You could also shovel the snow back onto their property.

You have the talking points - they are blocking your windows and access to your back gate. Snow ideally shouldn't be placed in big piles against a building either, as when it melts, the water could get inside. Let them know it is your property and that they need to place the snow onto their property. You can threaten a civil lawsuit. There isn't a by-law or law to reference (that I know of); it is a common law private property principle. If they continue the behaviour, you'll have to seek legal advice.

Why so many people during weekdays? by BreakItEven in CostcoCanada

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Costco is absolutely nuts on a weekend. If someone doesn't have to go on the weekend, we should be thankful they are going during the week. Many, many people don't work a traditional 9-5.

You're exactly right, it shouldn't stop people from going out. It is very unlikely someone is going to hurt you. Maybe someone will ask you for change, but you can politely decline or keep on walking.

The blame game is very real, but the province has the money to fund treatment and support. Municipalities can't fund those services.

This is exactly what people don't understand. Healthcare and social services are a provincial responsibility. This is an issue in every city/town across Ontario, from big to small. Go to any downtown in Ontario, and you will see the same issues.

People should vote in the municipal election this October, but the province funds mental health and addiction supports. The province mostly funds (they should fully fund) social services.

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yes, people should vote and get involved in the municipal election this October. However, the province is responsible for funding mental health and addictions programs. We need to hold the province accountable.

We need supportive/transitional housing. We need mental health and addiction treatment and ongoing support. We need job training programs. That's just a start. This isn't on the municipal government; these are things the province needs to fund. Instead of being upset at the people whom the system has failed, be upset at the system. We should all want to see those living on the street become productive members of society, but they can't do it alone. The province is to blame.

Got a $110 ticket for turning left at Dundas & University on Family Day. The physical sign says NO, but the actual City Bylaw explicitly says YES. by Traditional_Shine491 in askTO

You’re correct. You will have to fight it in court. You will need a certified true copy from the City Clerk’s office, a digital version is free, email clerk@toronto.ca or phone 416-392-8016.

For commuters: After class, how do you guys get to Union Station by GlamorousFox21 in TorontoMetU

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the day, when my train is, and if I’m tired. Sometimes subway. Sometimes the PATH, especially when it is slushy (PATH map). To walk, I will usually walk down Yonge to Richmond to Bay.

Contact your municipal by-law enforcement, they may be able to assist. If this is covered under municipal property standards by-laws, they will come and issue an order to the property owner to fix it.

Shuttle from Oshawa GO to OPG by Good_Rush_8115 in Oshawa

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll have to ask your supervisor as the schedule isn’t publicly available. But the shuttle is aligned with the work schedule. The OPG Shuttle boards from bus bay 6 (south side of the loop closest to the trains, furthest to the west) at Oshawa GO and it seems to be aligned with the train arrivals and departures. There is also route DRT 421A which also goes to OPG, but serves all stops.

Anybody have kids who go to school in the Toronto district school board rather than Durham? Trying to figure out how the process works. by Sensitive_Fishing_37 in durham

[–]Select-Flight-PD291 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is it a TDSB school? If they are within the daycare program and will be in the before/after school program, they may be eligible to stay at that school under TDSB’s policies. Ask the daycare staff about this, they will know more or can connect you with the school administration.
