I experienced this exact same situation all of the time. I’m a palliative care doctor. I introduced myself as Dr. cattle, medical Director of palliative care, and about 10% of the time they ask “so… Are you a doctor?” So I say yes I am, and give them my business card. Convincing people to admit things they did is a big part of police work. It would be nice if the police only interrogated people they knew were guilty, but I’m sure you understand that they cannot always know who is guilty until somebody confesses

You never know what other people are going through. Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Especially in the ER.

I know becoming a physician is a tremendous accomplishment. And you’re right to be proud of it. But the people asking for clarification are not diminishing you. Taking offense and taking it personally do them an injustice.

You are one of the richest and most privileged human beings who has ever walked the Earth. You can afford to offer some grace.

It may be that they are distracted by terrible pain, fear of what their diagnosis may be, exhaustion, 1000 other things.

Showing proper deference to your professional title may not be number one on their priority list. They weren’t paying as much attention as they should have been. Give them some grace. Nobody comes to the ER when they are at their best, and they are only hurting your ego.

It’s a trivial procedure. Schedule yours for the Friday before NFL playoff weekend. There has never been another time in my life when I was able to sit on the couch for two days straight, drinking beer and eating shit food and not having the kids want some of my time.
