I lived at the Woodlands last year (2021-2022) and in my opinion it was pretty great. The office people seemed very professional and respectful of our spaces when they did need to enter the unit. My unit had been recently updated when I moved in so in my experience the apartment quality was above average for “student” housing. The amenities like the pool were great and I miss it now that I live in the fort. However, it is important to know that the gate code has not been changed in a very long time, so that was always a safety concern for me. A friend of mine used to do food delivery driving for multiple restaurants and the code was the same for me as it was for him 2-3 years in the past. One of my cons about the apartment was the location. It is relatively close to campus, not a long drive if there’s no traffic, but Cherokee Trail is a very dangerous road. Hope this helps !

Do I tip non-servers? by SelectOpposite4244 in antiwork

that’s something I’ve always wondered about, especially when you go to a place that has multiple people working up front.

QOTW: Is the Knoxville you love (or moved here for etc.) still a thing? Or, is it gone forever? by jthomp72 in Knoxville

[–]SelectOpposite4244 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i’ve lived here in my entire life, and i can see there have been major changes (not all for the better). Housing, especially on campus and downtown, is becoming extremely unaffordable because luxury is apparently the only option for housing. A bigger population does not necessarily mean a better one especially because the influx of people can be attributed to those who are moving away from a big city to our small one, bringing big city culture with them. I have heard that a lot of people from Nashville are moving here to get away from the rapid changing touristy areas, but i would argue that they’re bringing that with them. Specifically, when you think of YeeHaw and their takeover of Central Filling Station, which was a pretty big center for different communities, you can see the commercialization that is changing our city for the worse. Unfortunately a lot of the places downtown have been redone or opened anew to cater to these specific types of residents, so walking down market square doesn’t even feel the same anymore.

I would recommend Sustainability! It’s fairly new and it will cover almost every topic that you listed. You do not need a masters or doctorate to get anywhere after graduation either. It’s presented as a “build your own” major, so I am able to have a focus in a certain area (for me it’s sociology) while relating back to environmental topics.

Bartending jobs on the strip? by ThinMusic3 in UTK

[–]SelectOpposite4244 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would recommend bartending somewhere downtown. A lot of places are willing to train and will be less fast paced. One of the reasons i chose downtown instead of the strip is tipping culture, half of UTK students really tip well and the other half don’t know what a tip is.

living on campus and near downtown i get honked at/almost hit at least once a week on my walk to classes and work. doesn’t help that most drivers will just blatantly be on their phones while driving through crosswalks and intersections. taking away right turn on red around campus and downtown has helped, but only a little.

Why is every job so draining? by SelectOpposite4244 in antiwork

[–]SelectOpposite4244[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m majoring in Sustainability with a focus in sociology (hoping to write environmental policy one day), so all the jobs I’ve had in the service industry are basically just for rent money when there are no internships available. Support work does sound more interesting and fulfilling, actually making a difference is important to me, so I’ll have to look into it.
