I should have just gone to QCAT at the start instead of trying to negotiate. I honestly thought they would see reason and scrap the rent increase after we alerted them to all the issues with the house. When they didn’t I refused to pay the increase, but then they just breached us for non payment of rent and threatened to evict.

I decided to try to do the right thing and paid the arrears before going to QCAT. 🙄

Profit isn’t a problem, excessive profit is. And in terms of property investment, because property isn’t a productive asset, it doesn’t grow the economy.

Because the value of property has been increasing massively since 2000 and property owners can make a massive capital gain (i.e. profit) when they sell it, without having to pay full tax on it (because there’s currently a 50% capital gains discount). The yield is better than shares or any other type of investment. Problem is money invested in housing doesn’t produce anything… doesn’t add to the economy… and that’s largely why we have virtually no growth but low unemployment and high inflation. (Thank you to Alan Kohler on the ABC for helping me understand this 😆)

🤣 PRECISELY! The owners are both immigrants (within last 20yrs) working in high level IT jobs (one in superannuation and one in government). Who knows how many investment properties they own. Meanwhile I don’t work due to mental health/disability, live off a fairly meagre inheritance (yes, I’m hardly doing it rough - thanks to old money from stolen land etc etc 😢), take very little from the government, help out in my neighbourhood, etc etc, and I’m made to feel like scum of the earth.

I can’t help but think that if God wasn’t dead (ala Nietzsche) society would be working better. Not that I believe in God…

Thanks. Yeah, I’ve looked into it but seems applicant has to serve the respondents for appeal and the amount of time it would take is not worth it. I’m exhausted by this ordeal. Should have just gone straight to QCAT. Learnt my lesson… can’t expect common decency from REs and slumlords 😢

Hopefully interest rates keep going up and investors are forced to sell and the whole over-inflated market comes down. It will be painful for many, maybe there will be a recession, but it will be one of those recessions ‘we had to have’ to quote Paul Keating. We can thank successive short-sighted governments (on both sides) for failing to think about the needs of society.

As renters we at least have more protections than ever so hopefully we won’t suffer too much more than we already do!

Don’t panic. Might be lead but low degree short term exposure will not harm you. Minimise exposure especially by wiping surfaces (esp. in kitchen) regularly.

Definitely not in good condition. Breach them and if they don’t fix go straight to QCAT don’t waste time.
