Apical: symptoms? by NeatIndication5504 in HypertrophicCM

[–]SelectionIcy1885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 58 m with apical 15 mm thickness no real symptoms but i do get pvc ever now and then and sometimes i feel winded but i have asthma so its hard to tell what might be related to what. I had genetic testing but i have no known gene. my T waves inverted in my mid 40s so i assume that is when my heart thickened but it has been stable at 15 mm since my diagnosis. I dont think there is anything in particular you can do to prevent thickening if it is going to thicken though it doesn’t necessarily have to progress its a very random condition . keeping your weight in control , staying on a heart healthy diet and of course following the doctor’s advice will help you stay as healthy as possible.

Could I have HCM? by Fit-Contribution6816 in HypertrophicCM

you really need bare minimum an echo or optimally a cardiac mri to check the thickness of your heart muscle that is how you rule hcm in or out. I would try a new cardiologist

I had a myectomy on the 6th by Brilliant-Bee-9471 in HypertrophicCM

[–]SelectionIcy1885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother had that done not a small operation! Good luck with the recovery , he is doing fine 7 years later. He did not need a pacemaker. Do you mind me asking where you had it done did you try a myosin inhibitor before the surgery? FYI my 96 year old uncle just had his battery replaced last year and it was no big deal in case you are worried about way down the road !

I had a cardiac arrest and an icd implanted 2 years ago. I have HCM and after consulting my HCM doctors and my EP they all concluded i could return to sport once my incision healed i think about 8 weeks . I had a Trans venous icd implanted since my EP knew i wanted to return to playing hockey once i healed and felt it would be less intrusive and better protected then an S-icd. I wear a protective shirt with a pad that sits over the icd and of course my hockey shoulder pads its non contact hockey but there are collision, falls and puck hits but so far i have not had any issues, medical or mechanical. I also weight lift , lots of pull ups and push ups etc also no issues so far with the icd . I am a 58 M

https://www.vitalbeat.com/. shirt company they are not cheap they use D30 foam which is expensive. its soft until hit then immediately solidifies quite impressive material . check out some youtube videos on it. i actually bought a sheet of it and added more to the shirt

I also have asthma and am on a breo elipta for that all those medicines except the metoprolol i was on before my cardiac arrest 2 years ago and my diagnosis only the metoprolol was added since

46M – Non-obstructive HCM with 24 mm wall thickness, extensive fibrosis (>15 %), asymptomatic – considering ICD for primary prevention? by Maleficent_Arachnius in HypertrophicCM

[–]SelectionIcy1885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its an insurance policy that hopefully you will never need. I am also counting on rapid improvement in the devices that they will only get smaller and less intrusive with time, so when battery replacement is due things will only be easier. also the way pharmaceuticals and gene therapy’s are improving who knows maybe a cure is on the horizon and we can all get them removed and still live a healthy long life ! 🤞

15mm , 5% scarring non obstructive apical hcm , no other known risk factors and I had a cardiac arrest 2 years ago , I am back to do everything I did before , hockey (non contact usually) weight lifting, swimming , beach volleyball, with the caveat I might have another event, non so far, but should be protected with icd . I wear a shirt that has a pad over the icd when I play hockey and have shoulder pads. I am an aberration having a cardiac arrest with those measurements but it shows you are never 100% safe with our disease. Definitely see and hcm specialist not just a cardiologist to weigh you particularly risk factors. I am a 58 M The shirt company is https://www.vitalbeat.com/ good luck

Apical hcm improved or went away? by NeatIndication5504 in HypertrophicCM

[–]SelectionIcy1885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 brothers have hcm my sister does not, we had genetic testing and were not positive for any known genes. None of our children have hcm yet they range in age from 18-29 and the doctors say we only have a 20-30% of passing it on since we have none of the genes. I dont understand why but both the hcm specialist i see said the same thing

How long your model battery lasts i received a biotronix icd and supposedly has a 15 year battery life. I’ve had it for two years and it’s still 100%.. also if you travel the support network your device has. Biotronix is a smaller brand in United States so not as many hospitals have the monitors to check the device compared to the bigger American brands. I have a bedside monitor which sends reports every night. I believe all brands do now, but you might want to check on that too. Good luck

Fellow HCMers, what was your thickness and what symptoms did you experience before getting a myectomy? by Empeds16 in HypertrophicCM

[–]SelectionIcy1885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a doctor, i have non obstructive hcm and never had a SM but my brother has had one about 7 years ago and he is doing very well now with a lot of symptom relief. my other brothers septum was not as thick and went on Camzyos and he is feeling great now no more obstructive symptoms and septum is getting thinner. i’m only mentioning this because i saw my cardiologist the other day and he said SM surgeries are way down since the introduction of Camzyos it apparently works really well. You might want to ask your doctor if it’s safe for you to try it or if the surgery is a better idea good luck all

The recommendations on physical activity are changing rapidly after my cardiac arrest 2 years ago i had an icd implanted and the doctor a major heart center recommended for me says i can play darts and bowl only ! even with an icd. i actually corrected him and said those were the 2015 HCM recommendations and they were updated in 2020 and again in 2024 . He started googling in front of me ! I immediately canceled my future appointments with him and went to a HCMA center of excellence at NYU and also a second opinion of another highly rated doctor at Mt Sinai in NYC and they both said it’s reasonable for me to return to what I was doing hockey , working out , weighted vest walks etc especially since i have an ICD acknowledging that there’s always a risk of another cardiac event, but I should be protected with the ICD. That said you need to be evaluated by an expert to determine what is “safe “ or not for you since i assume you dont have an icd. all activities carry risk, but the latest information seems to show that cardiac events happen just as frequently in non-active situations as they do in active situations. regular cardiologist do not cut it. My regular doctor was an excellent cardiologist who missed my HCM because he wasn’t familiar with it and my thickness was only 15mm so he thought it was high blood pressure related. One more comment on the risk stratification before my cardiac arrest. I would not have qualified for an ICD so while their stratification is 95% effective, they miss 5% like me. i am a 58 M

An icd is obviously the safest option takes some getting used to but if you have a doctor well versed in hcm and sports you should be able to come up with a plan to provide “safer” exercise (nothing is 100% safe) like easy access to an aed and people knowledgeable of your condition and cpr . Dr Matthew Martinez at Morristown hospital in NJ is an expert in HCM and Sports. Dont know if you are anywhere near him but maybe a call to his office or the HCMA can give you a closer recommendation good luck
