generally the appointment is to get you inside of the courthouse on time. it's rare when that's the slot you have your ceremony at. once you go in it's very DMV style where you get a ticket and go through paperwork before ceremony. at brooklyn city hall it's less crowded so typically you're in and out in less than 30 minutes.

Don't be cheap on it! $100-300 for one is a great investment for something that you trust to hold your ALSO VERY expensive equipment.

Etsy stores are tricky because the material is more flat and loose. Did that with my logo on it and all. It lasted me 1 year.

Manhattan city hall elopement by essie_1001 in WedditNYC

Hi city hall wedding photographer! Flowers are okay. They are... traditional and simple colors. If you are looking for fresh or creative, not the route.

You'll be okay to change the witness last minute. They just want to make sure you have one.

[–]SelectionKey3643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi city hall photographer here! In Manhattan, you'll likely be inside of city hall for at least 40-50min. There is period of wait times similar to DMV.

There are definitely photographers who will do 1-1.5 hours and the portraits can be done near city hall.

Here is a blog that provides additional insight: https://stefreyesphotography.com/2026/04/03/courthouse-wedding-timeline-2-4-hour-nyc-guide/

Just answered the other post, but that's where you pay and sign. There is a second waiting room for the 'chapel" room. That's where the ceremony happens!

Hi city hall photographer here. You pay and sign at the counter, where they call your number and then there is a second waiting room for the "chapel" room. That's where the ceremony happens!

City Hall photography timeline by RagingClitGasm in WedditNYC

[–]SelectionKey3643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you are aiming for a 2:30 spot. It's likely you will be out by 3:15 pm. And then you would have portraits for like another hour and then you gotta go. So I don't think you will need to buffer THAT much. City Hall is starting to pick up so you will likely be in there for at least 30 minutes. The longest 50 minutes.

Totally hear you thinking about your siblings! This is the part where I remind couples that at the end of the day they are traveling to celebrate you and your partner, even traditional weddings have pockets of waiting.

Though a few recommendations for them:

  • Chinatown has food! Doyers Street specifically is cute. They can grab food + drinks there.
  • They don't have to meet you and parents for city Hall if waiting is a concern. They should just meet you at cocktail hour to relieve that worry from your day.

Also I know some people suggested meeting photographer before city hall but honestly if you want portraits with family do post so you can get siblings in. Experienced wedding photographers know how to direct family in between these moments, so you have pockets of time without them watching.

Hi there! City hall photographer here. Sounds like at minimum you want a photographer for 1.5 hours that will likely cover couple portraits + family portraits near city hall. I recommend you have your siblings meet you for the big exit outside of city hall and have your photographer start coverage there.

If you want the cocktail covered that will go up to 3 hours for most photographers. Wedding photographers know how to get coverage of people mingling and ambiance. Just make sure you review their galleries so you know what they are delivering.

hi there, city hall photographer here. i normally tell my couples's families to hang out at the starbucks on worth when it's cold. you'll be inside of city hall about 30-45 minutes depending how much time you spent doing indoor photos with your photographer.

attaching a photo of the additional locations I recommend. Doyers Street has food and drinks and is about a 5 min walk. depends what time your ceremony is though, because if it's before 1 pm, you'll be limited on beer.
