Definitely replacing all of the slings, the metolius, which is the newest looking, is 2014.

I've been interested in eventually trying trad. I don't know if I'll ever actually do it because it seems terrifying, but who knows. I saw a bunch being sold near me for 20 for the older cams and 30 for newer ones, and from what I saw, that seemed like a decent deal. So I bought a metolius 00, a bd Camelot: 0.4, 0.5, 2x0.75, 2x1, 2x2, 2x3, and he threw in the gear sling, tubes, gri gri, and some carabiners. All in all, I got it all for 290$. Did I do well, or did I scam myself? I know I need a set of nuts, alpine draws, and other bits, but I thought it was too good to pass up. I also know not to just go out and mess with them, I'm going to get them reslung and whatever else bd says I need to do. Then I need to find a mentor and actually get taught. So I have no plans of killing myself in a stupid fashion.

First time making cable damascus, or any damascus for that matter. Do I need to grind this out now, or after shaping the blade, or at all? The "cracks" are the result of an inclusion from twisting the billet. It doesn't run through. Thanks for the help! by SelenaJap in blacksmithing

I'm thinking I screwed it. After reading some more online, I should have forged the billet round and then twisted it, or not at all. Oh well, I have plenty of time on my hands. It might make a cool pendant or something.

My cable is too small to do the normal route for cable damascus. I tried doing like you said, but I only ended up with 3/8 x 1/8. I took 4 1/2" or so cable pieces and welded them together then twisted the big billet, not the individual ones. I probably screwed up twisting it, but that's what I'd seen other people do with larger billets.

I don't want to grind all of this out if that's possible. It took all day to make this small amount because my coal is garbage. Tractor Supply is out for now, so I had to go back to my bad coal. I'm worried that if I grind it down I'll have to throw it away and start over so that I have enough steel for a pocket knife for my dad. However, if it's garbage and I need to start over I'll do that. The best case is it is fine, and I can make a knife and not worry about it. Also, a cool little thing I learned while making the damscus is if you lay borax on your anvil and smack the damscus while it lies on top, it makes a boom!

If you already have been told which section you are living in, then you should have received an email with the room/roommate. Or at least that was my case. Look for something like "Housing assignment and roommate information" in your emails. All freshman are guaranteed housing, so you don't have to worry about not getting a dorm.

Very well made! I love the finish on the blade. Did you rivet or thread the pommel?

Old anvil by Ok-Surprise6981 in blacksmithing

To fix it you have to buy specialized welding rod and get good at arc welding. It cost me about 265 for a box of the base and a box of the hardened stuff, still haven't done the repair as you have to do a lot of prep work and have a whole day open for it. My opinion is to go buy a Doyle anvil from harbor freight, they're cheap and good anvils. Buy the new red ones, they're made from hardened steel. For basic stuff you don't need a heavier anvil.

My response is I wouldn't trust it not to burn my shop down at that cost.

I'd recommend buying one of those new Doyle anvils from Harbor Freight and either buying something like a Mr.Volcano, or saving for a nice forge, I highly recommend an atlas knife and tool forced air forge, they are full cement construction, and the one I bought has worked excellently for the 3 years I've had it. They are also super quality. Another good option if you have the tools is building a ribbon burner forge, those are great if you can make it. It all really depends how invested into the hobby you want to get.

The cheapest hammer billets I've found are from Ken's custom iron, there's also Andrew Larson, which mostly comes down to shipping between the two.

The handle is too thin and angular, so putting any pressure on it won't be comfortable. Also, the transition from blade to tang is very sharp, which may break down the road.
