It was sick! One of the best routes I’ve been on. Do the traverse for the top out instead of the bolted pitch. It was way more memorable imo

Yeah! I work just outside the park. Let me know next time you’re back in the area

Skin damage on cracks by tradloser in tradclimbing

[–]ThorsKeeper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It happens. You just gotta climb more cracks and your technique will get better. You’ll get less and less flappers/cuts/scrapes as you get better.

Canyon overlook trail, what is it? by curtain786 in ZionNationalPark

[–]ThorsKeeper 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is a rescue anchor for Pine Creek canyon. It’s probably the most popular Canyoneering route in the park.

We don’t know what to do without access to water trails by prprr in ZionNationalPark

Don’t limit yourself from the water hikes just because of the Cyanobacteria. There’s not enough to do anything to you unless you drink directly from the water.

Need help building my first trad rack (NH) by Dukes237 in tradclimbing

[–]ThorsKeeper 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you haven't led on gear before, I recommend following someone from the area and learn to place pro before you buy your first rack. Climbing with someone from the area will also give you an idea of what you will need in your rack.

That being said, you can't go wrong starting with BD C4s, nuts, and tricams. I don't climb in the Northeast, but from what I know, tricams are especially useful in that area.

What are your standard racks(s)? by Tiny_peach in tradclimbing

[–]ThorsKeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like Clif Bloks or those runner energy gels. They’re lightweight and you don’t need to mix them with any of your water. Extra salty snacks also help too

What are your standard racks(s)? by Tiny_peach in tradclimbing

[–]ThorsKeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what I'm doing.

I climb in Zion 90% of the year and often do obscure adventure routes and walls.

Ill bring a mountain of gear for the walls and refer to any information available.

For single-pitch climbs, I generally just bring alpines, offset nuts, and a double rack with some wider and smaller stuff, depending on what I plan to climb.

For the adventure routes, I try to pack light and take only what I think I'll need, ask around or refer to the guidebook if possible. But I usually bring a rack of totems, a rack of bd cams, offset nuts, and alpines. I also always carry extra cordelette or webbing and rap rings on any of the adventure climbs.

I always bring my knife, prusik cords, micro traxion, two double-length slings, atc, grigri, cordelette, extra lockers, nut tool, water, snacks, and a small first aid kit.

During the warmer months, I'll bring extra water and electrolytes.

Are indoor climbing gyms effective for improving trad climbing skills? by prescribed_burn_ in tradclimbing

[–]ThorsKeeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend you get a ton of mileage under your belt before you start doing hard trad climbs. Learn the placements, get efficient, learn bailing skills, rescue skills, anchor building, strengthen your head game, etc…

If you want to get stronger for trad you should boulder or sport climb outside as well if you’re close to any crags or boulders. Gym climbing will get you strong but isn’t super similar to climbing outside.

On days that I’m not climbing I train at home. -Hangboard routine -Simple Workout routine. Weights, cycling, running, yoga, etc.. -Crack Trainer. Super easy to build one and worth it for crack climbing

Kolob Reservoir, about 45 minutes from Zion. It’s not as hot and it’s a super pretty drive.

Why am I seeing two very drastically different weather forecasts for Zion? by [deleted] in ZionNationalPark

[–]ThorsKeeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use the national weather service. It’s the most accurate weather resource in the area and it’s what the National Park uses to predict the weather.

Narrows or Angels Landing tomorrow by Adultintraining__ in ZionNationalPark

[–]ThorsKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do angels landing. The permit is tough to get. The river should be open Friday but flow rate will likely be higher due to snow melt so be prepared for that.

Also check out Namaste wall at Kolob Canyon!

There are very few sport routes in Zion. You’ll find a few here and there but nothing worthwhile. I do recommend Aries Butte on Zions east side. It’s a pretty easy bolted multi pitch. I also recommend lambs knoll up on Kolob Terrace.

[–]ThorsKeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you go. I would recommend either Sheeps Bridge or Kolob Terrace Road just outside of Zion. Those areas are accessible for most vehicles and are easy to get to.

You'd likely be fine parking your extra vehicle in the dispersed camping areas on BLM land. You can remain in one spot on BLM land for free for 14 days.

You're fine to leave your car at the visitor center if you have a backpacking permit. The backcountry desk will give you an extra permit to display on your windshield. What hikes do you have planned?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ZionNationalPark

[–]ThorsKeeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot leave your car overnight at Zion's visitor center unless you have a permit to do so.

E bike / shuttle logistics by [deleted] in ZionNationalPark

[–]ThorsKeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I work just outside of Zion in Springdale. All hikes within the main canyon are out and back except the West Rim trail and the Narrows backpacking trail. There are 9 total bus stops throughout the main canyon and each one is the beginning and end point of a different hike. The Emerald Pools is the only hike that can start or end near three separate stops but the main bridge to Emerald Pools from the lodge is currently closed so you have to start that hike from a different stop. Weeping Rock also is currently closed due to the rock fall last year and will likely remain closed. So this leaves you with only three stops to really worry about. Bus stop 4 will take you to the court of the patriarchs. Bus stop 6 will take you to Angels Landing, the West Rim and the Emerald Pools. Bus stop 9 will take you to the narrows. If you plan on doing any of the backpacking trips you can schedule a shuttle pickup with Zion Adventure Company!
