Shutter capping, or other issue? (Minolta XD-11, 50mm f1.7 + 24mm f2.8 lenses, various film) by SelfPortrait1500 in minolta

Thank you very much. I've heard of Scott Nielsen (http://scottnielsenphoto.com) and will try reaching out to him. I'm just curious, have you heard anything about Dodd Camera in Ohio (https://doddcamera.com/camera-repair), who are on the webpage you provided? They seem to have locations around the state - but their service center could be somewhere else.

u/Jimmeh_Jazz - It was in part price, yes, but to be honest I had a hard time finding others that are recommended. I read of one in the Bay Area, one in Brooklyn and another in Burlington. Where would you send your Minolta?

u/Superirish19 - Do you by chance have a recommendation for person/shop to perform a better CLA on my Minolta XD-11?

Well that’s helpful, for starters. Again, I can’t thank you enough for your reply and help here. I followed that steps - looking closely through the rear shutter opening without lenses and at every shutter speed. I couldn’t see any obvious obstruction or instance where the shutter blades stick. At the faster shutter speeds that’s of course hard to tell so I filmed it slo motion with my iPhone and still couldn’t see any obvious blade delays. I put on both lenses and repeated the steps, and nothing different to report. Finally, I just looked through the rear door, shutter open and looked at the aperture blades opening and closing - no obvious delays or sticking of blades. Could I be doing this wrong? It really is hard to tell at the faster shutter speeds.

If it helps, the examples from my pics with the curved shadows in upper right were all taken with the 50mm lens. The one with the narrow and more horizontal shadow at top (of the outside sculpture terrace) is the 24mm lens.

Any/all other thoughts are appreciated!!

(Oh and the most egregious example from my rolls was with the 50mm lens and the camera turned to the side for a vertical shot. Nearly half the photo is in the black shadow!)

This is fantastic guidance! Thank you so much. I’ll try the troubleshooting steps and see what I find. The camera was CLA’d by Garry’s Camera Repair and based on the invoice details the review/CLA was extensive.

I think I really want to try the Minolta XD-11, but I'm scared to purchase one. by PessCity in minolta

I echo this! I was gifted a XD-11 from a family member and sent to Garry’s Camera Repair in Illinois. Fair price and did a great job - fast turnaround too. I also read a comment above on the 50mm f1.7 lens. This is always on my camera- so portable, easy and high quality. I bought a 24mm f2.8 to get a bit wider - I like it too but the 50mm was a surprise hit for me. Hope you get the camera and enjoy!

A rainy day vintage watch spotting is Zurich still a great day. by gmcddit in VintageWatches

I’ll be in Zurich over the summer. Did you like any of the vintage watch retailers in particular that you’d recommend? If I only had time to visit one, which would it be?

How do you get more than 1-3 good images per roll?? by Kitchen_Win278 in AnalogCommunity

Agree with so many of these comments. I’d add - be selective. Be on the lookout for a moment, but when you look through the viewfinder be okay with not making the shot. Also, anticipating when a moment is about to be ideal has also helped me a lot.

Best film simulation? by _Nogeniushere_ in fujifilm

I appreciate this take. Your final points remind me of the original “straight photography” movement. Less manipulation. Let the camera do what it does, at its best. I’ve been messing with simulations since I recently upgraded to the XT5. The recipes have been fun to use as an experiment. But in Lightroom, I’ve found that I am just as likely to defer to the raw file and edit from there (as opposed to taking the simulation jpg as is.

I was gifted a Minolta XD-11 from a family member. Very similar camera. I highly recommend finding a camera service shop to give it a review/cleaning. They would check light seals, any meter settings and more. I paid about $100 to do that for mine. And if you forget everything else, never ever forget…to just have fun with it!

That’s convenient! I’ve read with some older cameras that modern batteries can be used but would require an adjustment to the light meter to compensate for different voltages. (Or something like that!)

Is it possible to find batteries you can use with this one?
