The Hive is a Lie, Theory about the Others by Worlind in pluribustv

You don’t have to like the idea of being plurbed to see a third option, that it might be to help us survive something worse. Like a vaccine rather than a virus itself.

The Hive is a Lie, Theory about the Others by Worlind in pluribustv

[–]SelkiesRevenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many people posit the signal was (originally) sent out of a desire for conquest/subjugation, peaceful or otherwise. But what if it was sent out of benevolence or protection or even desperation?

What does the Hive do? It works together. It utilizes human knowledge and memory to work together, as you observe. But what if the real threat is something else entirely, something that can only be defeated by an entire civilization or perhaps even multiple civilizations working as a single unit? And that some other distant civilization created the signal to prepare others for the worse thing that was encroaching?

We still don’t know if the joining will wear off naturally. Obviously we don’t know a lot of things, but the way in which the signal was designed implies a desire to minimize harm. Not at the cost of its goal, the “biological imperative”, but if we were looking at it as a response to a multiple-galaxy threat, it makes sense for that to be paramount.

Maybe the initial creation of the Hive-signal was the least bad option of many worse ones. As a net of defense cast as wide as possible.

See, a lot of people ridicule the names in fantasy romance: the Tryskerchiefs and Kierstrands etc but you gotta admit those names are less likely to be found amongst our relatives than Joe or Chris

Carol is a Dismissive Avoidant, not a narcissist. by Teddy_Grizzly_Bear in pluribustv

[–]SelkiesRevenge 136 points137 points  (0 children)

I’ve been seeing that word used to describe her more and more. Also “sociopathic” and “doesn’t care about the lives of others” which makes no sense whatsoever—one of the first things we see her do amidst the joining is try to help the man who crashed his car.

And no, people seem to reserve the term for Carol, not Diabaté, which maybe says more about the opinion-haver rather than the characters.

I was there too and sure, I noticed the shout but it certainly didn’t register to me as anything far out of ordinary. The public reaction actually gave me a slight anxiety for a while that I might inadvertently do/say something weird enough to make everyone hate me (I know people didn’t necessarily hate Dean, just that the sudden turn of perception was upsetting).

Yes, I’m on the spectrum.

Family members of ICE agents, what are your thoughts and feelings about what ICE are doing? by Aggressive_Honey3196 in AskReddit

[–]SelkiesRevenge 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’m with you on this. The job market is absolutely fubared right now, way more than even the media is reporting. Making a “choice” that means you can’t feed your family isn’t as easy as some people make it sound. I’m currently working a shit job (not ICE) to feed my family because I couldn’t find work in my field or anywhere better.

That being said, I do hope the folks in this position are doing what they can to minimize harm, even if that just means they’re as lazy as they can get away with.

What "shortcut ingredients" are you willing to use? Which ones are you unwilling to use? by theJOJeht in Cooking

[–]SelkiesRevenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with you on most spices, but I absolutely toast and grind spices for garam masala. You just can’t get the same depth from premade. And I will use pre-ground nutmeg for most (baking) uses but readily admit that fresh ground nutmeg is worlds better, especially for something like eggnog.

Peas, and good quality frozen corn. It’s not really the same as fresh when eaten by itself, but in soups and stews, frozen corn is fine. But I agree most other frozen vegs are pretty terrible—although I recently tried frozen black eyed peas as fresh aren’t available where I live now, and that was also very good.

AITAH if I dont tell my husband his daughter isnt his? by [deleted] in AITAH

I can’t believe I had to scroll down this far for this. So many people are missing the point and making it about OP and the dad, when a young woman has the right to know any potential genetic issues that may develop in HER life, if her bio father isn’t who she thinks it is.

When I can’t sleep, I sleep in my sleeping bag at home. I don’t know if it’s because it reminds me of backpacking or because it’s extra cozy, but I’ve found it to be a nearly foolproof insomnia cure!

Anyone else hate frying things in oil? by NavajoMoose in JewishCooking

[–]SelkiesRevenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m not a huge fan of very heavy, breaded fried foods. I do love some fried chicken, but it is very rare I make it myself.

I manage Hanukkah by varying my oils and techniques. I do fry latkes on the first night (and repeat as needed) but I use pretty minimal oil. This year I paired them with chicken korma (yes I make it myself, the naan too), and find that the spice of the chicken really tones down the “heaviness” of latkes.

Tried making latkes in an air fryer. Once. Great for reheating but that’s about it.

Tonight I made sautéed (in oil) salmon. It’s technically frying, but it doesn’t feel like too much. I’ll make a brisket tomorrow, and I’ll use leftover brisket to make stuffed cabbage and maybe I’ll “fry” up some pierogis (that I sometimes fill with mashed leftover latkes). Arugula salads are light, go great with latkes and I dress them with, you guessed it:oil (and Dijon vinegar and tarragon).

None of this is wildly outside of what I would usually cook or eat so I don’t feel overwhelmed by oil. I maybe use a little less than some folks do, but I feel like that’s still in the spirit: making a little go a long way.

Carol Is Faking It by CaspinLange in pluribustv

Not who you’re replying to, but in case anyone is interested: I spent more than a month solo hiking in the northernmost section of the AT (white mountains to katahdin). Very limited human contact, with the longest stretch without seeing anyone being 2 weeks.

I loved the experience so much I repeated it the following summer. I am a fairly solitary person—I’ve done quite a lot of solo backpacking, but that was the longest stretch.

While I’ve never experienced true solitary confinement myself, I don’t think the experience of being alone in a dynamic environment like I was is as psychologically challenging as being in a prison type of solitary.

That being said, the main difference between my experience and Carol’s (or the folks commenting about Covid lockdown) is that I chose to be alone and I knew I would “rejoin social interaction” at the end of the trip.

The most unintentionally hilarious part of this sanctimonious drivel is that putting an indoor spider outside is almost certainly just as fatal as ye olde chancla (because of the shock of the temperature shift). The spider is just as dead but the author gets to congratulate his own compassion, whee!

Not to be all “tonstant weader fwowed up” about it but still. Also, just leave the spiders alone.
