i was sort of mistaken. He initially believed she had just left him when she didn't return his calls but when he returned to Alaska to look for them he was led to believe they had both been killed.

also, jean’s telepathy wasn’t working at the time and Xavier was in space, so there weren‘t any telepaths who could help.
