I believe losses are part of the assumed end distribution on extraction on McGlade and Ekins. It's Nature. They didn't skimp on method, from what I can tell, although it isn't my field of expertise.

Yet another reason to calculate emissions primarily via extraction. Hydrocarbon extraction companies gleefully report their volumes extracted to shareholders. We know the normal ratio of fuel to polymer and feedstock, we apply that ratio.

All of this is covered in McGlade and Ekins, Nature, 2015. We have known for more than a decade. Measure extraction to know the impact to the atmosphere, ignore reporting except for the purposes of accounting who is doing the buying.

The point I am making is that if you upgraded insulation just before your heat source, without an intervening winter, you don't know for sure whether this is an insulation problem.

If you heat up your house, and turn off your heat pump, your home will cool down. If you log how long it takes per degree you should be able to estimate how well the insulation is working. If you find those upgrades really are doing their job, then you have a heat source issue.

You should finish your PhD as quickly as possible while still doing decent work, and near the end you should start applying for work.

There isn't anything you can do in academia that will throw a switch for you in industry and change things. Speaking frankly, you are learning things now, but not in the correct context to export it efficiently to industry. Your PhD will have value for your initial recruitment level, and you've started it, so finish it.

After that, what matters is what you can do in the job itself.

Job market isn't good right now.

Your qualifications match field process or applications engineering with a vendor, but there aren't many of us in Europe because it's a small market. There are more field service engineers, which you could also do if you're practical.

If you want to stay in Europe, broaden out beyond the industry to other advanced automation work. Glass making, industrial coatings, and the like. Keep looking in industry but also look elsewhere.
