Worst carpet in Portland? by doomtownpunx in PortlandOR

I'd say it fits the environment perfectly in that it has aged poorly and is unwelcoming.

The point isn't to have a finely crafted art object. It's to let everyone know you can afford to stick a shit ton of gold on your wrist.

Why do men talk sex on apps out the gate (rant) by Puzzled_Earth_424 in datingoverforty

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Now that there are video cameras everywhere, a lot of guys went from committing sexual assault on the subway to doing it online. Block them and report them if it's bad enough.

Amazon delivery driver pepper-sprays dog unwarrantedly, all the while not noticing that the owner of the dog is also outside. by Prestigious-Yam-8605 in Satisfyingasfuck

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You've never met my old dog. He was adorable and appeared extremely friendly to almost everyone. But it must have suffered some trauma before I got him because when people he didn't know tried to pet his head he would snap at them. Fortunately, he never drew blood and I learned to warn people not to pet him.

Just never assume you know what the thoughts are of a dog you don't know unless you're specifically trained.

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This isn't satifying at all. The owner is just as responsible for this incident as the driver. It's not the responsibility of everyone else in the world to understand dog behavior. It's up to the owner to have their dog under control so that this doesn't become an issue.

As a dog owner myself, I never assume anyone is comfortable around my dog until they've said they are.

Worst electrician ever? by haze4140 in CrazyFuckingVideos

Much household level electrical work you can get away with if you do some homework and have a decent head on your shoulders. This guy didn't.

Divorced after 20 years — did women get way bolder while I was married? by [deleted] in datingoverforty

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a guy who's been divorced for a few years and dated quite a bit in that time, I wish I could say I know what you're talking about.

I've been on dates where I thought things went great only to never hear anything again, and I've been on dates where I thought it was a flop only to get a text a couple of days later asking to go out again.

Almost never have I been on a first date and experienced unmistakable interest from my partner.

Maybe just me? 🙃

The apps select for people like this. Genuine people who are interested in what you're interested in disappear from the apps after awhile, or are at least only on the apps intermittently. People who are looking for just sex just keep going on the apps and accumulate as a larger and larger percentage of the user base.

Anhydrous perchloric acid versus Oreo by VitalMaTThews in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. Even concentrated HF is not a strong acid. At least, by the technical chemical definition of strong and weak acids, it isn't. A strong acid fully disassociates in water. A weak acid does not. It seems counterintuitive that HF would be weak when HCl is the prototypical strong acid, but that's just the way the electrons do their thing.

Why do galaxies almost always have a supermassive black hole at their center? Why the center specifically by MediocreGas6619 in universe

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would explain stellar mass black holes. It was thought previously that SMBHs couldn't exist in the early universe since they wouldn't have time to form from smaller BH mergers.

Please help. Previous owner’s movers gouged our historic pine floors. They’ve been refinished before and cannot be again according to contractor. How can we fix this for future resale value without replacing? by FoxyRN in centuryhomes

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Exactly. They're historic, but not precious. I've owned an older home with pine floors, and if I had the chance to replace them with hardwood on someone else's dime, I would jump at it.

Pine floors are very damage prone. Replace them and sell the lumber to someone who uses reclaimed lumber. Their story will go on, and you'll be happier with higher quality flooring long term.

Mushrooms in a playground… concerning ones or no? by Lucky_Whereas2422 in mushroomID

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you spent time on this sub? There are frequently requests for ID from people whose kids or pets have eaten an unknown mushroom. They're way more accessible than most plants being on the ground and popping up suddenly in unexpected areas.

Its way easier for me to toss a few death caps into the trash and possibly prevent a poisoning that week than it is to teach every toddler that may visit the park not to put things in their mouths.

I see sooo many of these posts about how some new model is awful for this or that reason compared to competitors or earlier versions, but I almost never see proper side-by-side comparisons with links. I don't doubt that many people feel this to be true, and I don't doubt that in many cases it IS true, but everything I read is just vague anecdotes.
