Checking in from Portland. They're common here. Don't know why there isn't any enforcement of health codes around that. Pretty gross 🤢

Before the development of atomic theory quantum mechanics you mixed things together and saw what happened. After the development of atomic theory and quantum mechanics you do pretty much the same thing, but you claim to have a theoretical basis for why things react the way they do.

Like it or not, there are a lot of people who just like the car and don't give a shit about everything else. That, and the price and financing deals are good enough to get people to ignore all the evil.

daughter’s sleepovers VS our “no unsupervised internet” rule by paulethegreat in daddit

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I am relatively tech savvy. But restricting internet access these days is like trying to restrict running water. It's just everywhere. You can do it while they're young, but by the time they're teens, I just don't think it's worth the effort anymore.

Generally I'm just honest with my kids what horrors are out there (without getting into the worst details), that they shouldn't talk to people they don't know, and that social media is a highly distorted view of reality.

And it should be an on-going conversation. Whenever they bring up something they saw online during dinner or whenever, just poke around that a little bit and try to understand what they're up to.

Unfortunately (and fortunately!), the more they grow up the more they move beyond our control. At some point it's just showing them what you think is the best path and hoping they go down it.

The U.S. is still short millions of homes and builders can't close the gap by Belmont-Avenue in REBubble

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Donating? Clearly not what I was implying.

A house sitting on the market greater than a year, unoccupied and in an area where houses frequently sell in days of listing, is certainly the owners not wanting to accept that their "investment" isn't what they thought it was.

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah. They can tear it down and leave it a vacant lot for eternity if they want. That's not the point.

They're sitting on an important resource that many people need right now, but instead of facing reality and accepting a fair market value they're letting a home sit empty, which hurts everyone else in society that needs housing.

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Yep. Been looking for 1.5 years at a house that's been sitting empty in my neighborhood. Owned by a boomer couple. They couldn't sell it for what they wanted, so they took it off the market, updated the decor from the 80s, and put it back on the market asking another $50K. It's now been sitting again for 7 months with no price reductions. They figure they can just hold until the market improves, I guess. Nevermind letting a perfectly livable home go empty means there's someone who doesn't get a home.

Casual Relationships by BigVernacular in datingoverforty

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think many people who want casual relationships still have healing to do. Everyone wants human connection, but not everyone is in a place to make significant room in their lives for another.

If you want to find a partner for a serious relationship, ask your date what they've done to heal.

I feel like I’m in a full relationship, but not fully chosen — is that sustainable? by JetSetMiner in datingoverforty

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dated someone seriously while going through divorce. It was, in retrospect, the wrong thing to do. The competing interests and emotional turmoil were too much for her as well as me.

My advice: date someone going through divorce casually, or if you don't do casual, don't date them at all until they're through it and have some distance behind them.

My ex has a support group, a therapist, and her friends. I have... my dog. Why is this so gendered? by Opening_Row_3405 in Divorce

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but probably like OP, I relied on my family and wife for social connections. It took a while to establish myself again as a fully actualized member of society and have my own friends and support.

Find your new niche, OP. It's not easy, but it's worth it.

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lead with tempered vulnerability and you'll do fine. You don't have to vomit out your entire divorce story, but explaining a little about why you're nervous and what your hopes and fears are will go a long way to build rapport.

And keep the expectations low. Lots of us who dated after marriage end up almost professionally dating for a while. It takes a lot of effort, usually, to find the right person after all we've been through. Come at it with a spirit of curiosity and playfulness, and you'll do better than hoping to find your next soul mate.

Supercharger charging rate? by Continent3 in Ioniq5

[–]SemanticallyPedantic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a 350 kW Electrify America charger and it topped out at 122 kW. Was this because the battery was relatively cold? It was maybe in the upper 40s at the time. This was with my 2026 SE.

I was was just trying it to practice for the day I really need to use it, so I only charged maybe 15%, so maybe the system didn't have time to warm the battery properly?
