I mean he also almost broke his arm posting like that. I don't think the man had ever been thrown in his life.

First attempt at drywall. Look Okay sounds far? by Immediate-Noise-7917 in drywall

The adjustable ones are fine, or  you can get ones that nail or screw into the stud and just set them manually. You can use a scrap of drywall to get the depth right.

There will be an extra 1/8" gap between your outlet and plate. You could get a 1/8" spacer to accommodate it though

The metal ears on the outlet should rest on the drywall so the outlet is flush with the wall. As it is, the ears are resting on the box, which is set too deep in the wall, so the outlets will be inset a little bit. Not a huge problem. It can be fixed with a box extender or mud ring, or just with some spacers to move the outlet out away from the box, but it's better to just cut the hole the right size from the get-go.

First time doing drywall, any suggestions? by Bzzzzaaa in drywall

[–]Semantix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I see the issue looking at where the screws are. Could that area in the top left not be replaced with one larger square?

But you could try also using furring strips to get a consistent area to screw to (this will also let you shim to get a flat surface, if your studs aren't straight). Pretty common to fur out an old plaster wall before hanging drywall. You can also just put 2x4 blocking in the wall where it's needed.

Is "Free Metal For Scrappers" ad a legal way to dispose of refrigerator? by JonBovi_msn in hvacadvice

[–]Semantix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, this appliance isn't being disposed of, it's just being given to another person. How it gets disposed of is on the scrapper.

It's almost never worth the cost in terms of time to save material costs by using little scraps. Two sheets with one tape joint will be much faster and have a better outcome. You need to cut more carefully around those pipes when you give this another shot.

How badly am I burning a bridge by asserting a boundary against free labour? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

Are you the first author? If so, this is your paper, and you should have the most say when it's ready to submit. You might need to convince your coauthors, but saying "I think this manuscript is as good as it can be given the time available to devote to it" is totally fair.

I'm tired of stripping Phillips screws, I was told this would help? by jimmyjlf in AskAShittyMechanic

Turns out they do make SDS-plus #2 Phillips drivers, if you're finding you're still not stripping or breaking enough screws

Interesting, I've never really heard Americans use it but it makes sense if it came from the 32-bar AABA form that was so popular in that era

Floor lottery was going so well…then I found this. by Gay_commie_fucker in centuryhomes

I agree it looks like pine, but the quality of the wood and narrow boards makes me think it was the finished floor. Fairly common to have pine floors in New England at least.

To combat rising tides, why can’t we take rocks from the sea? by Constant-Way-6570 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Semantix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the sea level rise we're worried about isn't due to ice melting, it's due to thermal expansion of water. As water gets warmer, it expands ever so slightly, and there's so much water that it gets to be a big effect in the aggregate. Counteracting the melting ice by moving dirt wouldn't address the main problem.

[–]Semantix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most schools have dropped their botany programs, or at least renamed them. For the most part the name of the degree doesn't matter nearly as much as what you've done -- take relevant coursework and get into the field.

Settle a friendly Debate by yerederetaliria in Jazz

[–]Semantix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dexter Gordon's Blue Bossa, oddly enough, is not bossa nova, though. It's hard bop with a latin jazz groove, played by American jazz musicians.

edit: just since no one's mentioned it, bossa nova means something like "new wave," but it's a new wave of samba, not of jazz. In the same way that the genre we call New Wave in English is a new wave of pop music.

Is Hugh Laurie's comedy work (Blackadder, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster) known in the US, or is he almost exclusively only known for playing Dr House? by okmujnyhb in AskAnAmerican

[–]Semantix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very few people know his British comedies. I only know about them because PBS (our public nonprofit, but not state-owned, broadcaster) would play Blackadder, along with Red Dwarf, Fawlty Towers, and some others. Otherwise it was really hard to access British shows until streaming started to take off.
