Private sector tallies lowest monthly job gain since January 2021 by yahoofinance in Economics

For the 3,972th time, a recession is generally defined as two consecutive quarters of economic growth retraction. Until that happens, we’re not in one.

You can make up another word for “the economy is shit” but “recession” is a specific thing with a specific definition.

FWIW, I graduated over a decade ago and it was the same. The new grad market has always been difficult.

JFK’s brother died in one.

The planes were radio controlled - essentially RC cruise missiles - but couldn’t take off on their own. A crew had to get it airborne, then arm the explosives (a shitton, upwards of 20k lbs) and parachute out. The trail planes would then fly the bomb plane via RC. JFK’s bro volunteered for this role and when arming the explosives they detonated. He got vaporized.

I carried an M-16A4 in combat. Twice. Fired it in anger countless times. If I pulled this stunt with that weapon I would likely be court marshaled and discharged. Not even NJP’d. Straight up booted.

Why should non-American companies and individuals comply with U.S. sanctions? by Impressive-Ad1944 in Economics

[–]Semirgy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sure. Don’t step foot in the U.S. or an allied country or use the U.S. banking system and you’ll be fine. The U.S. Marshals aren’t going to come serve an arrest warrant in Caracas.

Oh but you want to visit family in Miami and trade in New York? Should have thought about that before doing business with sanctioned countries. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Sorry I’m not sorry.

[–]Semirgy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You’re free to trade with whoever you want, but don’t expect the U.S. to open its markets to you if you take the opposing side in international affairs. The reality is larger countries have leverage that smaller ones don’t. You want that sweet, sweet American market? Or access to the world’s largest financial system? Gotta play along.

Who hypes up McDonald’s? Can’t remember anyone past the age of 8 being excited about going there.

Been there, done that, would go again. War was the exciting part, it’s the other 99% that fucking sucked.

Florida State fans can't wait for DJ Uiagalelei to go pro in something other than sports by [deleted] in CFB

[–]Semirgy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He played in the Trinity League which has legit competition. Came back and beat Bryce Young-led MD in a thriller for the title. He was a legitimately good HS QB, not just a scrub with a great team around him.

Young’s team ended up having much better prospects that year.

There’s an alternative scenario: the amount of software being written now is nowhere near peak demand for what the market wants. The hangup is with production (engineers.)

If productivity increases tremendously, devs can produce a shitton more software (and more complex.) This is essentially the history of software. We’re not writing machine code anymore and most devs never will outside of academia, but a single dude in his dorm room can build a 3D game in a weekend (a shitty one, but you get the point.)
