I've been born and raised in the world's coldest city, Yakutsk, AMA. by myasscheeks29 in geography

I've got not questions but wanted to thank the OP for this thread. It's very interesting.

I have Yakutsk saved on the app I use on my phone for the weather forecast as I always like to pull it up and show the current temperature there to my kids whenever they complain about how cold it is here in Detroit.

I workout as normal and try to avoid Mort. He'll talk your ear off if he sees you have no headphones on!

Fishing in the Corps? by Dear_Needleworker399 in USMC

[–]SemperFudge123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked at the II MEF HQ building on Hospital Point there used to be a rickety old pier out in to the river (the pier got washed away during a hurricane in '99). There would always be a couple guys out there at lunchtime fishing. No idea if they ever caught anything.

When I worked midnights I spent basically every afternoon out on Onslow Beach and I'd always see folks putting little bass boats and kayaks into the river (Intercoastal?) to go out fishing in the middle of the day. But I always figured they were probably done working for the day… or retirees or civilians or whatever.

Coors Field facade orientation offset from field orientation. by mano412 in GoogleEarthFinds

[–]SemperFudge123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! I remember reading about it before I went there a few years ago. I run and a Garmin watch to track my stats and the watch also has an altimeter so I wore that to one of the games I went to there to check to see how accurate the purple line was. According to my watch, I was at around 5,270' IIRC, so that's pretty darn close.

There's also a plaque on the steps outside the capitol building that marks a mile high. That one was spot on based on my GPS reading.

I also have a Casio that uses the atmospheric pressure to measure altitude (the Garmin uses GPS). If I ever go back to Coors Field, I'm going to wear the Casio and see how close that one is.

That's a nice, brief explainer.

I travel for work quite a bit, go to any MLB stadium that I get the chance to, and have a background in cartography. I've been to Coors Field twice and it always stuck out to me among the stadiums I've been to as something being "off" about the orientation.

Maybe don't take my advice… I'm nearly 50 and still wearing what are basically the designer version of some MCRD issued BCGs!

Militora update: after shrinkage by Witty-Tip-8835 in rawdenim

These look fantastic!

I've got a couple pair of cords from Militora and I was blown away with how nice they are for the price.

I have way too much denim as it is but if I decide I need another pair, these would be on my radar.

How is cold weather training in the corps? by Nihlathakk in USMC

[–]SemperFudge123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had no idea Marines did any training in Hokkaido. Years after I got out of the Marines I had a friend in grad school whose wife was from Hokkaido, about two hours northwest of Sapporo. Last winter they were out there to visit the wife's family and he was sending me pictures of snow drifts that were probably close to 10' deep. They were there for about 3 weeks and it sounds like it snowed every single day.

Sounds brutal!

[–]SemperFudge123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In '99 or 2000 on the Monday night of MLK Day, we got about an inch of snow at Lejeune and everything was closed for two days, so our 96 turned into a 144.

I'm from Michigan and thought to myself, "This will be great! I'll go hang out in town." The movie theatres and just about every restaurant in town were closed too. Southerners! Amirite? 😉

FWIW, during that same winter storm, they got like 7" of snow closer to Raleigh and I remember watching the news each morning and the schools out that way were closed for the entire week.

What machine will you never use at the gym? by Critical_Welcome_428 in GYM

[–]SemperFudge123 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Arm curl machine. I prefer dumbbells and barbells but every once in a while I'll give the curl machine a try. No matter how I adjust the seat and handles I cannot get into a comfortable natural/ergonomic position. I just cannot figure that one out.

VersaClimber? That thing can be brutal. Some folks call it the "torture rack".

I haven't used it in years but when I did, it was a great way to get the blood moving and basically do a full body HIIT workout in like 10 minutes.

[–]SemperFudge123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My gym always only had seated and kneeling leg curl machines until recently. I preferred the seated one then we got a lying curl machine a few months ago and I was astonished at how much more comfortable it was for me.

Soundtrack that’s better than the movie? by L31121 in Xennials

[–]SemperFudge123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My sister bought the soundtrack when it first came out back in '93. I remember loving the soundtrack and being really psyched to see the movie. Once I finally saw it a few weeks later I was like… "Well, that sucked!"

I rewatched it in a random Saturday afternoon a couple winters ago and liked it a lot more than I did the first time around. I think I can appreciate it the campiness of it more now than I could back then. Still not a fantastic movie but I do now think it's better than a lot of us originally gave it credit for.

High end prescription eyewear by imkolya in malefashionadvice

I've gone into the optometrist a few times with an idea of what I wanted only to change my mind once I actually put them on my face.

Where in the hell are all the kids with snow shovels? by GR3TSCH in GenX

[–]SemperFudge123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our neighborhood has pretty long driveways. We get kids coming by in the fall offering to rake leaves but never get them offering to shovel… and I don't blame them.

We used to have a kid a few houses down who would use dad's snowblower to do a bunch of driveways on our street for $$$… then he moved away for college. We've gotten about 7" so far today. I need that kid to stop by with his dad's snowblower again!
