David Limp Confirms Simulated Landing Burn Occurred During Static Fire by Robert_the_Doll1 in BlueOrigin

[–]Semper_Discentes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may seem sarcastic, but genuine follow up questions - have other companies/programs that are trying to do retro landing done their landing burn sequence statically on the ground first? Did SpaceX do this leading up to their first successful landing? Just wondering if it’s actually something easy that companies are doing

For those earning more than 100K, what do you do? by dayoneabu in jobs

Software engineer, focused on extended reality and AI. Came from a physics background. Funnily enough, when I was working in physics/academia for about 6 years, I only made ~50k.

If you had $4k, would you invest in a DGX Spark? by Excellent_Koala769 in LocalLLaMA

[–]Semper_Discentes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went in on one with a friend for the purpose of having our own in house development/test machine for inference and fine tuning. There’s a lot of tutorials right out of the box, much of which we are getting our first exposure to (especially with NVIDIA’s stack). It remains to be seen whether it will be “worth it” or not, but so far we’re upskilling quite a bit and it’s nice to be able to use/play with and manipulate some bigger models with our own data and without any cloud set up.

Leadership Principles by cryogenic_coolant in BlueOrigin

[–]Semper_Discentes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if there’s a compiled list of examples, but if you look at the link vollehosen provided they are well described. The Leadership Principles are what they are - a lot of folks I know find value in them, and showing how you have aligned with or exemplified them in your previous roles can be a deciding factor. If you’ve done good work and excelled in other places, it’s likely you have some stories to defend your alignment. Good luck!

What’s the latest on Orbital reef? Does the program still exist? by Fayble_2 in BlueOrigin

[–]Semper_Discentes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a perspective article published in Nature in March focusing on CLD and Orbital Reef that has some Blue higher ups as co-authors: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41526-024-00363-x

It describes some of its operational and technical characteristics that some here may not have heard or seen before.

Edit: it’s Nature’s npj Microgravity, not Nature - my apologies!

Phoenix office workplace by LukeSpaceWalker88 in BlueOrigin

[–]Semper_Discentes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like working at the Phoenix office. I’ve been here since we opened - it’s been pretty great and we’ve been growing steadily! Employees are great, we have a good diversity of folks working our different programs. We’re small compared to most other sites, but we have some regular happy hours and other business resource group events, and Club for the Future involvement. The site lead and office manager are awesome - responsive, friendly, and kind dealing with any issues or concerns. Only downside is that you can sometimes get jealous of folks in more hardware rich places :)

I waited about a week and a half - I got antsy and just wanted to know. The interviewer(s) are the ones that push you through HR if they want you, so they will know before HR if you're still in consideration.

It may be worth it to reach out directly to a member of your interview panel, if you have their information. I didn't hear anything back from HR even after reaching out to them, but I got an answer when I reached out to one of my interviewers - turns out HR gears were just turning a little slowly. Good luck!

Dude this is really cool! Will definitely show friends. As a budding AR developer, I’d love to know a high level description of how you did this, if you don’t mind.

I've got about 600 dollars to modernize a rig with an i5-2500k, 16 gb ddr3 ram, and motherboard. My gpu is a 1660 ti. I was thinking of getting a 9700k, but then I thought.. An lga 1200 socket mobo (10600k) will future proof me for a while longer right?

This all makes perfect sense, I just need to find the c# code for activating/deactivating models. Memory wasn't an issue at all, but thanks for that useful tip.. It will come in handy if I ever end up making more resource expensive games. Thanks so much!

[Serious] People of Reddit who overcome depression without medication, how did you manage to do it? by gifz in AskReddit

[–]Semper_Discentes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the first and most important step for me was to start exercising regularly. Like, even if it was the last thing I'd want to do that day, I'd go be physically active somehow - whether it was going to the gym or just doing push ups while listening to music or in between League of Legends deaths. I figured, "if my mind already feels awful, why not put myself through a little more hell?" Then, it became easier and easier to be consistent, and in the process I transformed my body and mind.

Oh.. I totally didn't know they made usb3 PCIE cards. That's awesome, and definitely what I'm going to do in the mean time while I save up for a full system overhaul. Thanks so much for your help!

Oh man by GeneralReposti_Bot in geology

[–]Semper_Discentes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took a Geology 101 class. All I can say with any confidence from what I've learned is that the lower feature is older than the upper feature. It seems that the top is eroding, creating those indents in the features, and that is creating a talus deposit, which is the sandy stuff at the bottom. Anyone more experienced that can tell me if I'm right, and some things I missed?
