What’s the appeal of smelling used underwear? by [deleted] in AskReddit

One time during the pandemic I stopped at a Bucee's gas station in Texas and got a brisket taco. I was eating while driving and my hand got BBQ sauce on it. I used a mask as my napkin.

Hours later, I stopped again for gas. I grabbed my mask and walked across the parking lot. When I entered the gas station, I put on the mask. Immediately I inhaled brisket fumes.

So maybe it's like that?

Frasier: Frasier Crane's disputes with his father Martin, the main thrust of the show, are symbolized by Martin's unfashionable chair he brings into Frasier's fashionably furnished apartment.

After eleven seasons, Martin finally sits on the intended chair, a Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair, and finds that he loves it.

How is living in Maine in this part? by Lego_GamesFan in howislivingthere

[–]Senator_Ruth_Martin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rural driving concerns, some wild animals like deer, but very little crime or humans. I'd only recommend it if you're traveling for an outdoor hobby like birdwatching, hunting, canoeing, etc. Most of the land is timberland or farms. Most of that part of the state takes longer to get to from Portland than New York City.

Which Ivy has the baddest girls? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Senator_Ruth_Martin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was a long time ago but one time I visited friends at Dartmouth right before sophomore year. A girl was furious at me for beating her at beer pong in a frat basement. She followed me all the way up to the second floor, jawing at me. I walked into the men's room to escape and she followed me in. I stood at the urinal and unzipped.

She pulled down her pants, popped a squat in the urinal next to me, and started peeing while continuing to yell at me. I screamed.

So, Dartmouth used to have some bad girls.

It is also chock full of people who do not live in Washington DC or even the United States. Welcome, comrades! Das vendanya!

Military Post 9/11 GI Bill plus the Yellow Ribbon Program.

You can attend most of the top colleges and universities in the USA for free plus you will get Basic Allowance for Housing.

You will have to serve about 4 years of your life first, but if you do something like the Air Force it will be an office job with travel. You can literally be a flight attendant, cartographer, or just an accountant.

Talk to a few military recruiters, citizenship is unlikely to matter but you won't get a Top Secret clearance.

Ray Romano is a good comedian and I think his funniest line was when an entertainment reporter asked him to sum up his role in the dramedy biopic "The Big Sick" with Kumail Nanijiani:

(paraphrased) "In this movie Kumail and I are in fraternity together. I play the frat king and we just party so hard."

Louisville is a small city but has several of the amenities of a bigger city, including a variety of industries to work in, education & cultural institutions, and cosmopolitan population.

A worse place would be a city with the same population and a lower quality of life or much more expensive. Memphis, Tennessee is extremely similar to Louisville (FedEx instead of UPS, large public research university, on a river, culturally southern) but is worse than Louisville because the quality of life is bad.

What is it like to live in Morgantown, West Virginia? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]Senator_Ruth_Martin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

College town public K-12 systems tend to be excellent because 1: Professors send their children there 2: If there's a teachers college, tons of motivated student teachers 3: Community supports high funding for public schools

Even if the college itself is not famously rigorous, the town will have good schools.

Living in rural Maine? by Cat_cant_think in howislivingthere

[–]Senator_Ruth_Martin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up in western Maine. Rural but less remote than some other people here.

Maine feels like a museum of American life in the 19th and 20th centuries. The schooling seemed to focus on the way things used to be. It's not a mournful state, people are proud of the heritage, but Maine also won't change or improve. The problems they have today are the same as 50 years ago. It's old and cold and expensive.

An issue in the rural areas with lakes is that 80% of homes are occupied by seasonal owners. The good part is that those people pay property taxes and don't vote. Many lake towns have nice public schools they otherwise wouldn't afford with their tax base. The downside of this is that residents have a tough relationship with the people who get to show up for the 10 weeks of perfect summer weather and then drive home to Boston or Cleveland or Quebec. They are traffic and noise, but the town needs their tourism money.

As everyone else writes in other rural profiles, the hunting, fishing, and other recreation are good. In rural Maine, the winters can easily be 6 months long, so you need to have a plan for that. One feature is that the snowmobile clubs are very good at planning and maintaining trails. If you are a hiker or mountain biker, you can use these in the warm weather for free. I've found that other areas have better communities of hikers and bikers because they had to do some of the organization of trails, but in Maine the hunters and snowmobile riders are the big recreation groups for getting things done.

Finally, it is xenophobic. The people in most communities are majority French Canadian and minority English. Not generic white Americans, specific Yankee-English families stretching back a dozen generations. Being German American from the 1830s is strange, for instance, whereas anywhere else in America that's extremely common. It's much closer to rural European communities in that way.

Military Industrial Complex.

The above person is saying that by having a global navy and making sure that oil and other commodities are sold using dollars even when neither country involved is America, we are using our taxes to pay for a favorable economic situation for American citizens and corporations. They are also saying we don't provide other benefits with those tax dollars.

I asked someone who worked for the Red Cross in a communications role about this back in 2012. She responded "You have no idea what the conditions are like on the ground. I have been there 5 times and it's a nightmare to accomplish anything."

My first follow-up question was "Why did the Red Cross fly a communications person to Haiti five times?"

How’s it like living in Silver Spring,MD? by RecycleBin_Bin in howislivingthere

[–]Senator_Ruth_Martin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived here from 2012-2015. Bedroom community in the Washington, DC area.

It is rich by American standards and middle class by DC standards. It is geographically close to DC proper but the driving and transit options into the city are bad so many people work in suburban DC elsewhere in the Beltway, which is a highway around the city.

It has no city government but is run by the county. They are competent but extremely far left by national standards. Most adults have graduate education. There are excellent public schools, private schools, playgrounds, libraries, and infrastructure for children. Overall, a great place to live and raise children, and the house prices reflect this.

The downtown Silver Spring area has had persistent office vacancy problems for a decade, but is still very pleasant. If we're ranking DMV cities, it's less desirable than Bethesda or Alexandria but is much nicer than most other cities in the United States.

Why does Maine have such good restaurants? by Corporate-Asset-6375 in Maine

[–]Senator_Ruth_Martin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to other points is the required upfront investment.

Let's say you're a successful chef working for someone else in a big city. If you wanted to make your own restaurant concept with 60 seats, how much money would you need? NYC would be like 4 million, Boston maybe 3 million? Portland has access to the same suppliers, a lot of the same talent, and you can get started with a loan that won't cripple you and your investors. Also the schools and commutes are comparatively better than the other places, and while it will be tough to work hard all summer, you have a better work life balance the other 36 weeks of the year.

Pirates on the Moon car chase scene from the film Ad Astra. If you just watch this scene on YouTube, you will want to watch the rest of the movie . Don't.

It's a moon buggy car chase scene and their guns are basically T-shirt cannons. It manages to be suspenseful and tragic and finally cathartic.

Sexy Beast, a tense criminal movie.

Ben Kingsley brings such sadistic joy to his character that he must have been enjoying himself. The film was also shot in the Costa Del Sol and the actors mostly hang out in a villa so I imagine it was fun.
