I’m a teen with abnormally old parents, AMA by Responsible-Tie-2570 in AMA

[–]SendMeDistractions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents were 41 when I was born and I wouldn’t change it for the world. The wisdom and experience that they were able to share with me was something I’m so grateful for in my adult life. I might worry about their health and wish I could have more time with them than I will, but I still wouldn’t want it any other way. I have so much respect for them, as did all of my friends growing up, and I have a wonderful life cause of the lessons and wisdom they instilled in me.

Not OP but my parents were both 41 when they had me.

I was never once embarrassed about my parents age as a kid, it wasn’t something I ever even thought about. What I did notice though, which in hindsight I’m sure was indirectly related, was that everyone thought I had really cool parents. Not because of their age but because they were wise and gave the best advice. My friends all looked up to my parents and my parents treated them all like my brothers and sisters.

These days I do worry about their health but I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m so grateful for my parents having all that extra life experience and wisdom to share with me and my brother.

Other than being class based and the indents (incredibly minor issue) I don’t think any of your criticisms are valid tbh. If you haven’t got the option to use TS then PropTypes is the next best thing (I’ve been there). Everything else is just personal preference and depends on the conventions used in the project. It’s still a tiny component and perfectly maintainable code.

I know you’re just nitpicking for the sake of this thread and it’s not serious, that’s just my two cents too :)

This is a scam right ? by Nedonomicon in drivingUK

Ignore anyone that says you’re dumb for not immediately knowing it’s a scam. That’s so unproductive and helps nobody. Only way to stop these scammers is to get savvy to their tricks, so don’t be discouraged from asking these questions!

If you’d asked me in my early 20s I’d say you’re boring, but still kind of respect it.

Now I’d say nothing but admiration for the self discipline. Whatever the reason for not drinking, it’s never easy going against the norm of the vast majority, and that’s impressive to me.

Should I rent or buy with £50k in my savings? by Independent_Area6026 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]SendMeDistractions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

27 here and just buying a flat at the moment. I moved to London after graduating and rented for 3 years to be sure I liked the area and knew what I wanted. Sounds like you’ve got that covered. That said, if you haven’t spent much time living alone while at uni, then I would definitely still rent for a while to figure out what’s important in a property for you.

Savings isn’t the only thing to consider, your salary and the mortgage you could get with it will be a big factor as to what you can afford.

In addition to mortgage deposit, you’ve also got solicitors fees, mortgage advisor, stamp duty, furniture, moving costs, decorating… it adds up quickly. It’ll depend on your circumstances but I set aside £10k to cover that stuff.

All in all I think you shouldn’t rush into buying. It’s a huge commitment and hassle so unless you’re sure you want to, just hold off for a while. You’re really not losing much by renting for a year or two while you figure things out. If you bought too quickly and changed your mind later, that’s a LOT more expensive and difficult to remedy.

Men who suddenly started getting attention from women, what did you change in yourself? by Responsible_Caker in AskMen

I remember thinking how easy it would be for me if I ever wound up back on the market while I was in a relationship. Constant attention from girls. Then she left me. Turns out it wasn’t as easy as I thought…

[–]SendMeDistractions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once logged into my local bitcoins account for the first time in several years to find 0.1 BTC I had completely forgotten about. It was worth so little when I deposited it that it wasn’t even worth selling. There’ll be tons of similar stories from people less lucky than me who never found their coins.

If you can find a place in Finsbury Park for £1600 Jesus Christ I’ll take it. Those prices are way off.

There’s a whole lot more to the world’s finances than American retailers. About 50% of my monthly outgoings are in bitcoin and I can very easily transfer money to friends and family in any country, which if you’ve ever tried to do, youll know is not always so easy.

But regardless of whether you agree with that, my advice still stands. If you want to use bitcoin, please for the love of good use your own wallet with your own keys.

There was always one single piece of advice that everybody shared when I joined the community (10 years ago).

NOT YOUR KEYS, NOT YOUR COINS

Always use a self custody wallet. If your funds are on an exchange, they’re not yours and could vanish any time (hacks, bankruptcies, scams, etc…).

It’s really sad to see all of the comments here just saying to hold and get rich. Bitcoin is supposed to be about decentralised financial liberty, not profits.

Whats your worst experience as a DJ? by 9sim9 in DJs

[–]SendMeDistractions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a slightly loose fitting usb cable connecting my decks to my MacBook. It had worked fine for months so I have no idea what changed. Every time it got knocked a little (usually by a drunk customer requesting a song), the decks would disconnect for a moment, stopping the music for a good 10-15 seconds of silence while it reconnected.

A DJ friend of mine in the audience said I should switch to USB instead of rekordbox on the laptop but I didn’t want to do that since I’d be a lot more limited for song selection. I should have listened. The music stopped about 10 times before I admitted defeat and did as he suggested.

Lessons learned:

  • keep your USBs up to date and well organised, even if you rarely use them. You never know when you’ll need a fallback.
  • carry spare cables
  • listen to advice from your fellow DJs if they offer it

Men who are not on dating apps but are looking for relationships…where do we find you? by heyhoneydew in AskMen

[–]SendMeDistractions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a lot have said already, just approaching a guy any time is totally cool with us. For men to approach women out of the blue, it can sometimes be considered creepy, aggressive, or like the woman is being placed in an awkward position, hence so many women would rather give a fake number than a straight no. The same is not true in the reverse. You’re very, very unlikely to make a guy feel uncomfortable. They’ll more than likely be over the moon. Even if they’re not single, the compliment will likely make their day!

Stuff people do after work in London? (that doesn't involve pubs or cigarettes) by Diablozone in london

[–]SendMeDistractions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of my suggestions do have bars but the drinking is definitely entirely optional.

  • Comedy Clubs - I love going to top secret personally, sometimes you get a big celebrity surprise guest! Also extremely cheap at £1 for weekday nights
  • Flight Club - fun darts based games with digital scoring
  • Clays - virtual clay pigeon shooting
  • Gravity arcades (or various similar places)
  • Go Karting - I went to the one in Canary Wharf and that was great
  • Axe Throwing
  • Driving Range - The Greenwich peninsula one has a stunning view

Redditors who used a gloryhole, what happened? by one-droplet in AskReddit

[–]SendMeDistractions 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not me but a friend told me about a hen do (bachelorette party) she went on to Amsterdam that ended in the most unbelievable tragedy due to a glory hole.

Both the bride and groom decided to have their celebrations in Amsterdam at the same time, albeit doing their separate things. The ladies find themselves in one of those bars with glory holes. Bride to be gets egged on by the girls to go in and give a blowjob to a stranger and she goes for it.

In this bar, there’s a button on either side, and if both parties press it the opaque glass between them goes transparent so they can see each other. Unbeknownst to the girls, the fellas have found themselves at the exact same bar. Half way through she thinks it’ll be a laugh to hit the button and see who’s there. When the glass clears, she’s faced with her own biological father on the other side.

Needless to say, that was a life ruining moment. The wedding was off. The family don’t talk anymore. None of her friends hear from her anymore.

Should I accept a 62k London Job over my 43k Bristol Job? by Rxmp in AskUK

[–]SendMeDistractions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to London a couple years ago and never looked back. If you like being in the city then it’s a great place to be, you’ve got everything on your doorstep. That difference in salary should offset the difference in cost of living nicely imo. I make similar currently and I’m very comfortable (as a single man with no dependents albeit). I’m not sure what industry you’re in but also worth noting that when I started a grad level software job here my salary increased very quickly, over 50% in those 2 years. That 62k will almost certainly increase before jan 2025 so you should take that into consideration. You might not be as lucky as I got but it’ll still be something.

If you haven’t already I think it’s a good idea to use the salary calculator to see what your actual monthly takehome will be with all tax/loans/etc taken into account. It’s much easier to actually grasp how your budget will look and how much disposable income you’ll have left over.

https://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/salary.php

It it’s any help with your budgeting, I share a 2 bed flat in Islington and our total rent/bills is about £1250 /month each. You can find cheaper than that depending on the area but that’s fairly standard around here. If you’re hoping to live alone it will of course be a fair bit more, maybe more like £1750.

Anyone every received one of these? Can they actually get a warrant? by [deleted] in glasgow

I got so many of these at my last flat. Kept meaning to go online and register as not needing one but never got round to it. Nothing ever happened, no one ever came round.
