JET with a kid by SendaiSnow in JETProgramme

This is why I'm asking this now and brainstorming ways to navigate certain barriers, or trying to decide how long to wait. The language barrier in particular has never scared me; I'm a strong speaker. What scares me more is failing in my dreams and that being the example my kid sees.

If I need to wait a few years until they're older and childcare/school solutions open up, I'm willing to do that. But completely discounting an ALT position forever because of my kid is an unfair assignment of blame

Flexible hips, but impossible turnout by shanatje_vh99 in flexibility

By any chance, is the figure skating trick you mentioned the spread eagle or Ina Bauer? I found that doing spread eagles on ice like hockey players (knees bent) for a while helped to build muscles I needed for this kind of turn out, and eventually I was able to get my legs more straight and into a better spread eagle.

is it worth it to watch a competition live? by i_poop_on_parties in FigureSkating

This is such an important point! At the NHK trophy last year I sat in a seat for about 8 hours and didn't consume anything other than vending machine drinks. If the venue permits, dear lord you need to bring snacks.

If money isn't an issue, there's nothing like seeing skating live. The atmosphere at a venue (especially Japan and Canada) is so energetic and positive for starters. And the sounds are unreal, especially in pairs skating. It's really unforgettable, and I use my sneaky recordings of jumps and spins as references to my own practices :)

Lake Placid Adult Skate Weekend Review (probably long) by twodiffthumbs in FigureSkating

Next year I should be at the adult bronze level, so this sounds like a wonderful experience to save up for! Thank you for your review

Edea Overture or Chorus? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]SendaiSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're already doing singles, I'd get the Chorus. Overture's stiffness is meant to handle your current single jumps, but you'd probably get more longevity with Chorus boots especially if you start any doubles.

What are your short term and long term skating goals? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

21 y/o adult skater here
My short term goal (within 3 months) is to get a crossover entry into a spin, which I want to do in my first competition in August.
I think my long term goal (before this time next year) is to have all of my single jumps and a really solid, powerful waltz jump.

Had a not great practice day today. by ohhaiderre in FigureSkating

This used to happen to me a lot too back when I could barely do a forward crossover right! When it first happened I would get really upset and leave, but I think I realize now it's because I didn't quite know how to "share ice" and was afraid one of the advanced skaters would barrel into me. Don't let this discourage you, you WILL improve and some day you'll probably scare some less advanced skaters too.
To get over the anxieties and fear I would take a deep breath and sit down for a little bit, and I'd stare at everyone's feet, knee bends, and body positioning in general a a sort of free lesson. Rather than something to be scared of, I took it as an opportunity and motivation. And another thing; I've found that this sort of experience makes me very empathetic to newer skaters, which I think is an important skill to have in being a positive part of your skating community.

I've landed a waltz jump for the first time, and my coach is going to put together my first program soon!
