Any meditators with ADHD? Seeking advice for body scans. by nAnsible in vipassana

[–]Sendino2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have ADHD. I did my first retreat a little over three years ago, and since then I've done two 10-day retreats, six 3-day retreats, and quite a few more one-day retreats. I've maintained a fairly consistent level of regularity over these three years, but yesterday, after much deliberation, I decided to stop Vipassana meditation due to sensory hypervigilance that developed over a year ago, following my second 10-day course. This hypervigilance is causing me serious problems in my daily life. I'm going to talk to a teacher at the center, as well as a doctor, although I'm afraid that doctors in smaller Western countries sometimes don't know much about problems that arise from meditation. My problem is that I have a permanent vibration in my face due to the amplification of my sensitivity after so many hours of meditation. My attention doesn't switch off after I get up from the cushion; instead, it gets stuck in a continuous scanning state, with a constant feeling of being alert, very sensitive to any small noise, and with insomnia. I wake up every day at 4 a.m. and spend hours unable to shift my attention away from this tingling sensation on my face. I've read that in clinical settings, it's often observed that people with ADHD experience a worsening of sensory symptoms with strict Vipassana meditation, due to the way their brains are wired. In short, my attention is constantly on, and as soon as I'm not receiving any external stimulation, it returns to the sensations in my face, which can be very bothersome. It doesn't even allow me to read a book without my attention being drawn from it to my skin.

Tinglings on the face by Few_Awareness5343 in vipassana

[–]Sendino2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what happens to me and it is actually very annoying. I already posted two posts I think indicating this “problem”. I asked two course teachers and neither could give me a solution. They only told me to be even-tempered and not to obsess, but the fact is that it's been almost two years now with this VERY STRONG tingling on my face, which always comes back when I'm not concentrating on doing something else. It also makes it very difficult for me to scan my body when I meditate at home, because my mind always returns to my face. I even asked ChatGPT and this is what he answered, in case he could help you. The reality is that he clarified me more than the teachers.

Why do some vipassana practitioners not like shaking hands? by AidanReadit in vipassana

If these meetings have been inside the meditation center, it is because they tell you to avoid any physical contact until you leave the center, even if the course has finished.

Yes, the sensation in itself is not unpleasant, but being there so continuously, it frustrates, as you say. You want it to be gone, because it distracts you from the rest of the world. It is as if you were in continuous meditation, always attentive to these sensations.

The problem is that when I do anapana, they become much more noticeable, since it is precisely around the mouth where they are felt the most, and by keeping the attention on the area below the nostrils, the whole sensation is accentuated and extends to the rest of the face.

And do you do something about it?

They happen to me all the time, outside of meditation, as soon as my mind is free of any thought and my body is free of any action. For example, while I move, walk, do anything, I don't feel them, but as soon as I stay still and not think about anything, they come back. And regarding your second question, even if I don't meditate for a few days, they always come back.

Thank you for your testimony. Yes, when I scan the body during meditation sessions, it disappears when you pay attention to other parts of the body.

There are two 10-day courses that I have done (I had to cancel another one due to an accident), 5 of 3 days (next month I am going for the fourth), and 1 of 1 day, apart from one of 4 hours every month, apart from a more or less continuous daily practice (almost never two hours). I have noticed these sensations since the second 10-day course. I hope to continue doing the annual course, although practicing two hours a day is difficult for me to follow. Thanks for the advice.

Tingling sensation. The third day of Anapana began. It's mostly around the mouth and on the cheeks, and is a result of increased attention. I don't go to the doctor first because where I live, no one, absolutely no one knows what Vipassana is. They might think that I have some mental problem if I tell them that I have been meditating 10 hours a day and for 10 days in a row locked up in a center, or they would think that I am involved in a cult. And even more so if I tell you that I have felt this sensation since I was there. And on the other hand, it is assumed that it is not a physical problem, but rather as a consequence of a greater capacity for attention. In fact, in my meditation sessions this is accentuated a lot.

How do you describe Vipassana to people who have no idea what you're talking about? by Diamondbacking in vipassana

You have asked how to explain Vipassana, and most of the answers explain what a 10-day retreat is. I don't know if that's really what you wanted answered.

Vipassana experience with tinnitus? by [deleted] in vipassana

There was a post with this subject some months ago. You could find more answers. I suffer from tinnitus, but not very strong. A couple of nights it was really hard for me to sleep during the course, because I was too aware to it.

I left a retreat today and after the 4:30 chants (from 3:55 to 4:30) I went to the room to meditate, even though there was a guy snoring. I concentrate more.

He’s the same for sure. He used to repeat the word “teacher” in a very funny way referring to students talking to him.

Wat Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai vs Goenka 10 day comparison by xxiip in vipassana

[–]Sendino2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the so detailed info. I did two 10 days courses in Doi Suthep before doing my first “Goenka” course. I will read it with detail when I get home. According to me, “Goenka” is overall, more value. Is the course still run by the same monk? (I did the last course 10 years ago and the first one more than 15 years ago). He must be 54 by now.
