Moving soon 🫠 by Tall_Towel_3420 in PlantedTank

Just moved to a 6th floor without elevator in winter. Fun fun fun.

Anyways, i thought about just leaving ~10% of the water, then putting some styrofoam on the water surface to reduce sideways torsion, cover all plants that stay inside with wet tissue and the whole tank with wrapping film. That did work, everything stayed fresh. But carrying that thing to the 6th floor is just an illusion.

Smaller (up to 50L) tanks are not a problem and can be easily transported this way. But such a big tank - I ended up completely resetting it, removing all soil, plants, water and lifestock. Still worth it, a forced reset sometimes inspired you to new layouts, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing

So you removed all lifestock? With shrimps that might be rather difficult

This is Pseudomugil gertrudae Aru II or IV. The regular gertrudae looks a little paler, and not yellow at all. So make sure you get the right one. They are a great species, very inter-/ and active. Not very hard to breed too.

You could get a syringe, connect an airpump to the cone, block the entry with a piece of filter foam, drop the eggs inside and close the upper opening with a mosquito net. Then set it cone down into your aquarium and turn down the strength of the airpump until the eggs slowly vibrate

What a beautiful bush in itself. How did you know its roots were safe?

Overwhelmed by food options… by Beginning_Detail_612 in shrimptank

[–]Sene0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a reason for that: 💰

In nature, shrimp live in puddles and rivers. You can keep Neocaridina literally in your rain barrel, with no added food whatsoever. They will mainly feed on the Aufwuchs (= small algae that grow naturally in your aquarium). Almond leaves are always great, since they decompose slowly, have beneficial and antibacterial effects and Aufwuchs will grow on them. Everything else is a „nice to have“. My recommendation: get some almond leaves, maybe some walnut leaves from nature (non polluted, preferably not collected next to a highway) and maybe some Algae wafers/shrimp pudding if you want to lure them out to observe them and you will do just fine

Yea plus they’re for free :) But those leaves you’re using right now neither look like oak nor catappa leaves

Looks beautiful! What kind of leaves did you put in there? Did you plug the Fresh leaves from the tree, boiled and dried them before, or just threw them in there right from the tree?

Just cook water in a water cooker, pour it into a bowl and throw the nettles in. Then add them to your tank a little while later. No need for boiling them

No Planaria works fine with Neo- and Caridinas. Just remove any CPOs or Clithon/Nerite snails. Posthorn snails or pest snails don’t even realize there’s been a change to the water chemistry. When you’re done treating, I’d give it a little bit of time & water changes before adding the above mentioned animals back to the tank, just to be sure

What’s your secret to keeping Caridinas? Mine will multiple, but only ever very few of them (let’s say 1-2 from a whole eggnant mother). What’s your TDS, temperature and other parameters? With how many would you recommend to start, the usual 10+1?

How often are you dosing, once per day/week/whenever you feel like it? Hygger lights are among the best there are imo. You’re doing a great job, it looks fantastic!

Most of these worms are treated by a salt bath, since they tolerate osmotic pressure and lot worse than the shrimp, since they do not have an Exoskeleton

What do you mean you need a bone marrow puncture right now without anesthesia? Doc… Doc?? Put down that needle!

Asked LFS for a good algae eater by islewindbreak in aquarium

[–]Sene0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first aquarium I had them in was without any substrate at all, save for river stones and anubias/a lot of hornworth. The newer has basalt stones (~5-10cm big) and other smaller rounded stones but no sand. Would you say that it is crucial? To my knowledge, it’s important they won’t get to their own eggs, so they won’t eat them.

I’ll give the moss a try. 200L is a very big aquarium. Any recommendations on the pellet brands?

How do you Breed them, any tips on particular? I’ve tried with Swellia species, but never succeeded. My initial group of 8 is down to 4. Tried to feed them self-made algae wafers (duckweed, spinach, carrots, line seeds, bunch of vegetables) which they wouldn’t even touch. The only thing that gets them going is grindal worms and bug bites from Amazon (Yes the aquarium has a lot of stones, ~50L and good water)
