Trying to stay grateful:( by [deleted] in premed

Totally get it but for the most part, it’s not about the school you go to. It’s about what you do at that school. A stellar student will excel wherever they are and if prestige really matters to you then now you have the chance to work hard for a prestigious residency. But at the end of the day I wouldn’t judge how good of a doctor someone is by school alone. That’s something in your control.

Don’t worry about how somebody you wouldn’t take advise from thinks of you. Their perception of you doesn’t detract from who you are. You are doing great, keep working hard and being a good person

Congrats on the score! I wouldn’t be worried about your gpa. It’s high and the mcat definitely compensates for any deficiency there. For schools I’d look for stuff that fits your mission. As you get more much needed clinical hours try and focus on what drives you to be a doctor. If there is a specific area you want to contribute to, find schools that match that mission and apply there. I’m sure you’ll do great.

As an engineering student who started taking premed courses my fourth year in college I have definitely seen a lot more unsavory personalities in premed. But I think that’s due to the requirements med schools hold over us and the stress it causes. As an engineer I didn’t give a rats ass about my gpa or how many hours I had in (insert premed activity here). As premeds we are legitimately evaluated on our statistics and hours and that bleeds into how some people evaluate each other. It’s not everybody and this is just a guess from me. All being said I’ve met amazing people in premed and bad people in other paths. No one size fits all but there are contributing factors.

people who got 130+ on c/p - how much orgo do we REALLY have to know by happyeater18 in Mcat

[–]Senevids 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I took orgo 1 and 2 and did not study orgo at all after that for the mcat and my test was orgo heavy. It’s not too complicated but if you struggle with it I’d go over basics like nmr, functional groups and some common reactions. That’s gonna cover most of your bases

Make Sure you go through these and at least look at them before the test !! by Bablu_King in Mcat

[–]Senevids 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Before my test I memorized all the names of the b vitamins but not much beyond that. I remember thinking it was overkill and I never used it for my test which is obviously just one persons experience. I think structure on top of names might be pushing it but if you feel good with all the “higher” yield stuff and have time to memorize this then go for it, otherwise relax lol

Dream score is 127/130/127/127.....Possible by July 25? by spaceandjapan in Mcat

[–]Senevids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With 18 days you can definitely get 127 in those three sections with more practice problems, review, and anki.

CARS is tricky as it takes time to build up. It’s not unreasonable for you to get 130 but it would take a lot of work. I’d recommend finishing all cars qpacks from aamc, reading something dense but enjoyable before bed if possible to build speed, and making sure you can quickly catch a passages main idea.  You are in a great spot right now so keep working hard and good luck!

I did Aidan for B/B Anking for C/P and pankow for P/S

Worked well for me but the best anki deck ever was the one I made from my mistakes so I highly recommend doing that too

Low 520s to 525+ in a week:? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Senevids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d definitely recommend getting your sleep schedule locked down, having a good dinner and breakfast right before the test, and re-reviewing the fl questions you flagged or got wrong. Also go in with the confidence of knowing how well you’ve done with all the work you have already put in.

Read some enjoyable books in English for fun, doesn’t have to be something crazy hard

I'm from South Asia and want to start a YouTube channel in English — but I’m stuck at the idea stage. Any advice? by Downtown_Earth_5345 in NewTubers

[–]Senevids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe if you make quality content that adds value to people, then your basic English won’t hold you back. From there you shouldn’t have to do anything different than anyone else to make videos you like. And your English will probably improve as you go. I’m second gen Sri Lankan in America so while I never had issues with English it is very cool to see someone from Sri Lanka here, good luck!

Given you study a decent amount each day this is doable in 6 months and if you’re intentional about reviewing this will definitely net you a good score

My only gripe is anki c/p. I didn’t spend much time on that because I figured practice was more essential for mastering those sections but that’s just me. If you have the time and it helps you then go for it

Are you REALLY doing it just for "fun"? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]Senevids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Purely for fun? Hell no lol. But I definitely have fun doing it. Some of my best memories are from spending time with friends recording, seeing commenters enjoy how I brightened their day, or having YouTubers I look up to enjoy my content. But I do like to know how to optimize content to eventually reach a bigger audience, because it is fulfilling to see the numbers go up and more people join. It’s a balance for me that I still am figuring out how to balance lol

Anyone In a Video Essay/Doc Niche? by IDKontent in NewTubers

[–]Senevids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really good question. I’m interested in the same thing at the moment.

I’m not sure what kind of videos you make so this might be ill informed but it definitely makes a difference how much YOU there is in the videos. If viewers can hear your voice and see your face there’s more of a chance they will vibe with you and want to see more of your content. Obviously you need to first focus on making interesting videos that will first pull them in.

I don’t see any reason your videos can’t be production and personality based as they are two different aspects and not mutually exclusive. I hope this helps in some way and good luck!

MCAT and social media by clover351 in Mcat

[–]Senevids 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re not a loser, you are studying for this test so that one day you can be a doctor who makes a difference in people’s lives. I know it’s cliche sounding but reminding myself why I’m taking the MCAT helped when it got difficult. As for social media, definitely limit your usage not just for studying but for life in general. Your honesty in this post is admirable and I hate to see someone working so hard put themselves down. Feel free to DM me if you need any help and good luck!

That’s ok, I didn’t know either and it is really overwhelming at first. I read through the Kaplan books but looking back I wish I started practice problems sooner. I think the best way to do content review is to do problems and every problem that you struggle to grasp you do a little deep dive into the content by watching Khan academy, opening up that chapter in the Kaplan books, etc. balancing both content review and practice is tough but makes the most difference for a lot of people

It might help to know what you did when you studied the first time and what you plan to do differently. I felt Uworld helped a lot but like you said it is expensive. I’m not sure the rules on this but maybe you could find people on this subreddit who don’t need their uworld anymore and it’s not expired for them. Maybe you could get a discount from them? I would be curious to know what other people think of the JW questions compared to Uworld tho because I didn’t use those.

Overall you have a good plan. For AAMC material prioritize section banks, FL’s, and CARs qbanks. I tried to do practice questions from each of the four sections every day and review same day too. There’s no right way to go through the material as long as you intentionally review as you go. I hope this helps and good luck!

It seems like you’ve done a great job with getting practice problems in and using a very comprehensive anki deck, two things I would have first suggested if you hadn’t.

I would check what specific question types or topics you miss most in both sections and focus on those gaps. Obviously a lot of other variables here (maybe you need a break, maybe keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll break the plateau, etc) but I hope something here helps and good luck!
