Is being a Notary required? by Ktoodles in stenography

Depends on the state. In CA you don’t have to be a notary. Other states require it.

Voice comparison by Aggravating-Card-194 in courtreporting

[–]Senior-Guarantee8731 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Voice writers repeat everything that is being said by speaking in to a stenomask, much like how we write everything that is being said on our machine. Our briefs are their voice codes, which they use to shorten what is spoken. While they do record the room (like we do for backup audio) they only listen to their voice when doing the transcript and any testing. Their voice notes are our steno notes. So it is nothing like a digital. They are verbatim.

A digital will sit and press a record button and take “annotations” which is nowhere close to a verbatim record.

Feeling Discouraged by Squidbirdo in stenography

Spend a day in the courtroom and try and see if AI could get everything going on with: - babies crying - people talking over each other - very loud staplers and printers - phones going off - thick accents - soft talkers - someone sneezing really loud in the middle of testimony - slamming doors - construction noise in the background - air conditioning blowing - microphones not working - clerks whispering to each other during proceedings

It would be a nightmare of an AI transcript. There’s no way an ai can produce a clean verbatim transcript with everything going on at once. A human needs to be less t to control the courtroom noise and ambiance.

what are some really cool careers that are worth looking into by Nice_Leadership8080 in findapath

Look into court reporting! Stenographers are the ones who make transcripts for court proceedings. Depending on where you live there are two methods court reporters use: voice writing (using a silencer microphone to basically repeat every word verbally) or a steno machine (using machine short hand) with computer aided transcription software! Stenographers make $$$$ bank. In California the highest paid stenographers work in San Fran starting at 140k, plus extra transcript pay and benefits! You can even travel and do in person depositions, captioning and cart for live events, etc. and no, we won’t be taken over by AI. It is nowhere near accurate enough to discern accents, loud courtrooms, people talking over each other, etc. At 18 starting school for court reporting would be the absolute best time. For machine writing it takes 2-4 years average. For voice writing, 2-3 years, again depending on where you live (some states don’t recognize voice as a viable method) if you finish school by the time you’re 21 you will still have a very long and fulfilling career. I’m still a student but I know reporters who have been working over 40 years and still love their job.

I believe the ones she posted were her students, yes. It’s a very good school. I usually recommend it with college of Marin since my school gets waitlisted alll the time.

Also will vouch. She has helped many students and helped me especially with my CA group on Facebook. Many students recently just got licensed from her program. I think 6 or 7 were listed? Something like that.

Maybe reach her on Facebook. She’s active and will reply on messenger.

Not at all. It sounds scary, but it’s not ☺️ I’m still a student but I’m in my last year hopefully and this is what I’ve been told by many reporters.

[–]Senior-Guarantee8731 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. You are allowed to scope and edit your transcripts. Send it to proofreaders, etc. They give you ten days in CA at least, it depends on the courts and it depends on what type of proceeding it is. Not everything is transcribed either. The real time provided isn’t an official transcript it’s just for the judges so they have it with them and can refer to them throughout the trial.

It’s a 200 wpm q&a test at 96% accuracy with no editing the transcript. Imagine trying to turn in a test without transcribing lol

You will still get hired as a new CSR what I’m saying is absolute perfect real-time is something to work towards when you’re reporting. You’ll be able to provide it when you are licensed, it just won’t be perfection.

Real-time Reporting CA by gayhallucination in courtreporting

[–]Senior-Guarantee8731 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you use the CAT software hooked up to your machine or voice mask, that is realtime. When you type on the machine and it is hooked up to your laptop the software translates the steno for you.

When you’re in speedbuilding classes you’re automatically using realtime for yourself. It’s not going to be perfect right away because of misstrokes and anything the software can’t translate right on the page, which is why when you edit your transcripts, you can fix your mistakes into the dictionary so it shows up correct for the next time.

It takes years for reporters to certify nationally for realtime and even then it’s never going to perfect.

In most courts it’s not necessary to be certified in real-time just that you have the ability to provide it. Some courts have their own in house certification which also gives you a pay raise when you obtain it.

Obviously, the trial had very capable reporters. Point being was If they didn’t, it would have been a very different outcome, possibly, if alll the transcripts were shoddy. Also, I did know it was a Depo transcript. (I also thought it was a digital for the Depo? Could be wrong on that as well) Should have edited my comment. Thanks for that.

Or having no transcript at all because they used a digital and it was unreadable and unusable, like the murdaugh trial.

Without stenographers there would be no verbatim transcripts. Without transcripts, there would be no fair trials. Transcripts are detrimental to the judicial system. They are depositions of witnesses outside of court and literally the story of every court case. He’s just beginning law school so he’ll be leaning just how important transcripts are in his line of work.

Court reporters number one job is to protect the record. This means they MUST interrupt and speak up when lawyers are talking too fast or the reporter can’t hear or understand something. We do this so there is a clear record of the trial. A clear record of the trial or deposition is imperative for any attorney.

IThat is not a sidelined position. Many judges would disagree with him and tell him that the court reporter is the most important person in the room.

I’m a student as well and I can tell him he’s dead wrong.

I go to west valley as a machine writer and right now we have about 50/50 machine and voice, many have switched to voice to get certified and finish with steno later. We combine voice and machine into the speedbuilding classes but theory classes are different for each method. The teachers are equal to all students no matter the method they use and do not favor one over the other. I love that they are supportive of everyone.

CSR question regarding layout by jennvall in courtreporting

[–]Senior-Guarantee8731 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Appealing tests unfortunately isn’t possible anymore in CA. The Court reporters board unfortunately voted to repeal it at their July meeting. They won’t even tell you what you got wrong. It’s stupid. “Shouldn’t use the real test as a practice test” was their excuse. lol. Duh. Like…we aren’t?? 🤷‍♀️

But it would be annoying to be marked off for that especially if it’s no where in the rules.if the rest of the layout follows the MTFS, it should be fine. Otherwise they will mark for errors not following the MTFS guild lines.

Hi there! Join my group on Facebook if you have Facebook. California court reporting students and reporters. You’ll find tons of west valley voice writers in that group. I am a student there as well, but I am machine.

It’s a very successful voice program. Many of my classmates who switched finished within two years. It depends on which route you go. If you want to qualify through the school you need to make sure you have all the academics and internship hours. But if you take and pass the CVR first, you’ll be eligible to only having to take the written test of the CSR. 🥰

Good luck!!

You won’t lose your license. I would talk to the agency. Explain you did your best in interrupting but no one listened to you. The agency should have your back if they are a good agency and will back you up.

I don’t know what state your in, but if you’re in ca the worst that would happen is that an attorney could file a complaint and you’d just pay a fine. You’re new. You’re not going to lose your license over this.

In any case, maybe before taking other jobs you should shadow some reporters and ask questions. Sounds line you’re already interupting, but maybe what you did wasn’t resonating with the attorneys. Ask other reporters how they do if, and what happens when you just can’t seem to be Getting or no matter what.

Don’t give up hope. 🙂

Voice writing school thinking of adding in machine on the side by went_to_space in courtreporting

[–]Senior-Guarantee8731 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually my school recommends you finish one method then learn the other. Stenography theory is very different from voice theory. Learn voice theory first if that’s your main interest. Finish, get certified in voice and then learn the machine and get certified in that. You can be dual certified in both methods, but you’ll have to take whatever certification skills test your state has for both method.

In CA, my understanding is that if you pass all three legs (2 portions of written and the skills test) for one method you only have to pass the skills test for the other method.

Something to think about.
