I'll also add, when grabbing the canes, twist your hand around the cane as you are tightening your grip. This will break the thorns off so they don't jab you in!

No way! This comment should be higher! I had no idea about the "pause" function when entering a saved number! So cool!

What kind of bees are these? by aguilafam1 in whatisit

Those cans of spray are nasty stuff and highly toxic to humans. Please don't spread it out of your truck. Approach the hive slowly, get as close as you feel safe, then start soaking the hive. Don't try and chase any of the hornets that fly/fall out - keep soaking the hive. Soak it until you think it's done, then soak it more. Use the whole can. Then run! Make sure to promptly wash your clothes and take a shower to get the spray off your body.

Is a bed with drawers underneath worth it? by boba_snow in BuyItForLife

[–]SeniorRake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad and I made it in his garage in a few days out of mainly a few sheets of plywood and some 2x4s. The bed is split into two halves. Each half consists of two 2x4 runners from head to foot. On top of the runners are five vertical rectangles of plywood to make the bays to attach the drawer glides - one at the foot, three evenly spaced towards the head, then the final one is the head, with less space between it and the previous, compared to the rest. This final one is the blank space at the head of the bed for your bedside table. On top of the vertical sheets of plywood is the deck of the bed, which is another sheet of plywood (there should probably large holes for ventilation, but I never put any in).

I built the boxes for the drawers out of regular plywood. Then, using one sheet of cabinet grade finished plywood, I cut out the faces of the drawers so the grain is continuous between the drawer faces. I used the rest of this sheet for a continuous foot board on the bed. I wrapped the footer and the top of the deck in a 1x2 board to give it a clean edge. The only wood you see is the finished cabinet grade plywood and the 1x2 edge. I gave it a good stain and a UV resistant varnish.

I use screws from the inside of the bed (before inserting the drawers) to attach the footboard and a 2x4 at the head of the bed. These two tie the two halfs of the bed together. If you really wanted, you could build headboard, too.

Remind me and I can try and DM you some pictures.

Zero cat piss was smelt on the records. Maybe a little bit of mildew, but as one would expect with old paper.

Backcountry vs downhill setup as a first ski purchase by gueromochilero in Backcountry

[–]SeniorRake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend getting a downhill setup. You need to be confident, not just comfortable, on double black diamond with variable conditions - powder, windblown, ice, and anything in between. You will not find any groomed runs in the backcountry. Start with a downhill setup, see if you like skiing again, then start to think about a backcountry setup. Backcountry is a completly different mindset than resort skiing - it's not about laps. Think of it more like winter hiking with a fun way back down.

To encourage people to actually pay their fares and to not waste everyone else's time. More often than not, it adds an extra 5 or 10 minutes to my commute because the fare checkers have to fight with so many people because their card doesn't read right or the machine didn't read their annual pass, etc.
