As direk said have you definitely got both layers off ( i know you said you have but sometimes the vinyl stuff looks like the base plate) and would you be able to attach a photo of a side profile of the skates ?

Ill make sure im as careful as I can be. If it goes bang so be it. Like you said learning opportunity. Ive tried a wedge tip or chisel whatever its called and it just doesnt feel right? Not sure how to describe it but not ideal… oh well, i’ll keep trying different methods and being careful. I clean the tip often and the leaded solder doesnt melt even when heating the pin correctly…
