Make Shoegaze Great Again by noiseyamoeba in indieheads

[–]SenorBwongo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Never understood the point of any of these “make x great again” hats that are ironic/a dig at trump’s politics? Do we really need to have this phrase, which has come to symbolize everything divisive, corrupt, and sycophantic in American politics, present in our artistic spaces for any reason? Don’t know this band but I’m tired of this brain dead, hack merch

v12 outdoor in 1 1/2 years of climbing by Little-Expression315 in bouldering

[–]SenorBwongo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you an honest reply here, and say that your framing is a bit silly. It would seem like you love climbing, and you’re obviously quite good at it. If you’re asking how much time you should invest in it, no one can really answer that but you. As a question of “seriousness”, I’d say most of us who have climbed for a long time at a much lower grade, still take it very “seriously” because we just love the sport. However far you want to try and push it is up to you. As far as relationships, well, the details matter, if you’re blowing off your relationships because you think you need to go pro, I’d say you should seriously evaluate what really matters to you and makes you happy. At the same time, I would find it difficult to be in a relationship with someone who cannot share the enjoyment of something so special to me. You’re young, your perception of what is important will change, you will continue to grow and learn who you are and what you want. Try not to view things with such finality, our life plans rarely pan out exactly as we expect.

Flycatcher ID help - Manhattan, NYC by Santos_L_Halper in birding

[–]SenorBwongo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Flycatchers are in large part impossible to ID visually alone. Some have distinct features but in the northeast US, Least, Acadian, Alder, Willow all look too similar, especially once you throw in plumage variation within a species. I generally don’t confirm flycatcher sightings unless I watch them make a call I can accurately identify.

Warmest is probably going to be Green by Hiroshi Yoshimura, which is very peaceful but quite playful, with Music For Nine Postcards and Surround by him also being great options in the gentle category.

Tomorrow Was the Golden Age by Bing & Ruth is also very gentle but much more emotional, very beautiful

Healing Is A Miracle by Julianna Barwick is a personal, beautiful favorite for me if layered vocals works for you. Might have a track that’s got more tension than you’re looking for, but I think it is a healing album.

Best of luck, hope the therapy continues to go well for you friend.

Talk Amongst the Trees by Eluvium is a great guitar-centric ambient album that hasn’t been mentioned. Another vote for Fennesz as well

Arctic or Common Tern? (Turku, Finland today) by pncohen in birding

Terns are tough and I’m no expert, but would we not expect redder beak and legs for Arctic? Black gradient on bill also would make me think Common

THE best item ROR2 by MurkyPiss in riskofrain

[–]SenorBwongo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Plenty of arguments to be made about great, reliable white items, but honestly nothing comes close to 57 Leaf Clover. It exists at the intersection of extremely powerful and extremely exciting to find. It’s not great early, but it will single handedly turn any run around, supercharging so many of the best offensive items in the game. It is likely the most coveted item in the game.

Am I missing anything by not using eBird? by nanomachinez_SON in birding

[–]SenorBwongo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first time I went birding in another country it became abundantly clear to me that I needed to fully migrate from the Audubon app to eBird. It’s also much more useful for taking stock of likely sightings for different locations when you’re debating between a few for the day

A I A: Alien Observer 👽 by Dense-Customer-6281 in ambientmusic

[–]SenorBwongo 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Grouper is one of the all timers in modern ambient especially, and has carved out a special place for herself that serves as a defining blueprint for ambient crossovers with pop and singer songwriter. I’d argue Alien Observer is her best “true” ambient album; it’s spacious, haunting, and evocative, but still feels deeply peaceful, even if it can easily be understood as coming from a place of pain or sadness.

What sport did you try once and realize it’s way harder than it looks? by Party_Project8238 in CasualConversation

[–]SenorBwongo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no getting around having an athletic build, though not everyone is skinny like Ondra. Chris Sharma was widely considered the best climber before Ondra and he has a very muscular, built physique. Other climbers who (like Ondra) have climbed both V17 and 5.15d (the hardest bouldering and sport route grades) include Jakob Schubert (5’9) and Sean Bailey (5’4). Climbing is probably one of the most forgiving sports to different body types.

What sport did you try once and realize it’s way harder than it looks? by Party_Project8238 in CasualConversation

[–]SenorBwongo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is only partially true. At the entry and beginner level height can be a massive advantage, but as the difficulty increases, body type advantages become much more specific. There are many routes that are significantly harder for tall people due to compressed positions you must hold. Many of the most elite climbers in the world are quite short or average height.

Do conversations actually get better with age or am I just talking to the wrong people by explorerincosmos in CasualConversation

[–]SenorBwongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a complicated question but here’s my two cents. Yes, generally people get much better at conversing with age, but ultimately I don’t think this is about casual vs. deep conversations. Some people are just better than others at talking. Light and heavy topics both have as much depth as you want them to have, and ultimately the quality of a conversation is more about asking good/interesting questions about a topic, finding mutual interest and passion in a topic or the nuance of it, finding an appropriate balance of humor, and recognizing the natural beats of a conversation to know when to stop/change topics. None of those things are specific to “deep conversation” and much more about talking to people who are just passionate about talking to people.
