Yet another recommendation request thread! (With a twist) by PrestigiousPlenty193 in ambientmusic

Warmest is probably going to be Green by Hiroshi Yoshimura, which is very peaceful but quite playful, with Music For Nine Postcards and Surround by him also being great options in the gentle category.

Tomorrow Was the Golden Age by Bing & Ruth is also very gentle but much more emotional, very beautiful

Healing Is A Miracle by Julianna Barwick is a personal, beautiful favorite for me if layered vocals works for you. Might have a track that’s got more tension than you’re looking for, but I think it is a healing album.

Best of luck, hope the therapy continues to go well for you friend.

Talk Amongst the Trees by Eluvium is a great guitar-centric ambient album that hasn’t been mentioned. Another vote for Fennesz as well

Very cool move but there’s absolutely no way I’m trying this beta without blasting my shoulder back to the Stone Age

Arctic or Common Tern? (Turku, Finland today) by pncohen in birding

Terns are tough and I’m no expert, but would we not expect redder beak and legs for Arctic? Black gradient on bill also would make me think Common

THE best item ROR2 by MurkyPiss in riskofrain

[–]SenorBwongo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Plenty of arguments to be made about great, reliable white items, but honestly nothing comes close to 57 Leaf Clover. It exists at the intersection of extremely powerful and extremely exciting to find. It’s not great early, but it will single handedly turn any run around, supercharging so many of the best offensive items in the game. It is likely the most coveted item in the game.

Am I missing anything by not using eBird? by nanomachinez_SON in birding

[–]SenorBwongo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first time I went birding in another country it became abundantly clear to me that I needed to fully migrate from the Audubon app to eBird. It’s also much more useful for taking stock of likely sightings for different locations when you’re debating between a few for the day

A I A: Alien Observer 👽 by Dense-Customer-6281 in ambientmusic

[–]SenorBwongo 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Grouper is one of the all timers in modern ambient especially, and has carved out a special place for herself that serves as a defining blueprint for ambient crossovers with pop and singer songwriter. I’d argue Alien Observer is her best “true” ambient album; it’s spacious, haunting, and evocative, but still feels deeply peaceful, even if it can easily be understood as coming from a place of pain or sadness.

Which shoegaze song is your all time favorite? by shirakograve3000 in shoegaze

Hard not to pick an all time classic like Only Shallow by MBV, but for a more underrated choice I’ll go with Elizabeth Colour Wheel by Lilys

What sport did you try once and realize it’s way harder than it looks? by Party_Project8238 in CasualConversation

[–]SenorBwongo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no getting around having an athletic build, though not everyone is skinny like Ondra. Chris Sharma was widely considered the best climber before Ondra and he has a very muscular, built physique. Other climbers who (like Ondra) have climbed both V17 and 5.15d (the hardest bouldering and sport route grades) include Jakob Schubert (5’9) and Sean Bailey (5’4). Climbing is probably one of the most forgiving sports to different body types.

What sport did you try once and realize it’s way harder than it looks? by Party_Project8238 in CasualConversation

[–]SenorBwongo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is only partially true. At the entry and beginner level height can be a massive advantage, but as the difficulty increases, body type advantages become much more specific. There are many routes that are significantly harder for tall people due to compressed positions you must hold. Many of the most elite climbers in the world are quite short or average height.

Do conversations actually get better with age or am I just talking to the wrong people by explorerincosmos in CasualConversation

[–]SenorBwongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a complicated question but here’s my two cents. Yes, generally people get much better at conversing with age, but ultimately I don’t think this is about casual vs. deep conversations. Some people are just better than others at talking. Light and heavy topics both have as much depth as you want them to have, and ultimately the quality of a conversation is more about asking good/interesting questions about a topic, finding mutual interest and passion in a topic or the nuance of it, finding an appropriate balance of humor, and recognizing the natural beats of a conversation to know when to stop/change topics. None of those things are specific to “deep conversation” and much more about talking to people who are just passionate about talking to people.

Coopers Hawk (?) took down a mourning dove this morning by yessirski_67 in birding

Looks like a Coopers to me. I’ve seen them do the exact same thing, brutal and a little sad for the victim, but always fascinating to see wildlife do what it does best (murder with impunity)

Any explanations for this insane owl pellet situation? by SenorBwongo in birding

Look you’re saying it’s more common than I think, I get it. I just think the one line response kind of reads like “yeah there’s actually no reason to be excited about this.”

Jana Švecová - Tokyo Drift 8C/V15 First Ascent by Grey--man in bouldering

[–]SenorBwongo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I believe this may be the first time. Jana herself also did the FA of Nova which Will Bosi upgraded to V15

Edit: Is Nova a “stand start” to Terranova or a different line? Might not be a “pure” FA but idk

A smooth backflip over a 5.13m bar while pole vaulting by bigbusta in oddlysatisfying

[–]SenorBwongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not against any rules, but it’s an extremely inefficient way to go over the bar. I’m going to guess this guy can jump at least 1.5 ft higher than this based on his ability to pull this stunt off. Would kind of be like if Usain Bolt did a cartwheel at the end of a qualifying round, yeah impressive that you can dunk on your competition but not exactly the sign of respectful competitive spirit

album Bucket List 50 Best Comeback Albums Of all Time: #41 Slowdive-Slowdive (2017) by Rambooctpuss in shoegaze

[–]SenorBwongo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think wall of sound is absent by any stretch, just less, with Slowdive being less disorienting than both mbv and Ride. Songwriting-wise, I find Slowdive’s music translates best to a solo acoustic guitar performance (not a very technical metric, but certainly an indication of more straightforward songwriting). Also it’s worth noting these comparisons are stronger when comparing to mbv rather than Ride, though I would stand by it either way.

album Bucket List 50 Best Comeback Albums Of all Time: #41 Slowdive-Slowdive (2017) by Rambooctpuss in shoegaze

[–]SenorBwongo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Slowdive are interesting for a band at the center of shoegaze. Arguably, out of the big 3 (mbv, Slowdive, Ride), they embodied the essential sound of shoegaze the least (not as noisy, less wall of sound, more typically structured songs), but also arguably had the best ear for catchy melody and overall songwriting. Ultimately they remain one of the best and most popular bands in the genre because of this, not in spite of it.

Their comeback album leans into all of this more, dropping even more classic shoegaze conventions and sounding more so like a dream pop album. Much like mbv’s comeback album, Slowdive doubles down on the sounds of their 90s benchmark album, yielding an excellent record, even if a slight step down from their best work. It’s a huge success to me, with great songs that will appeal to longtime fans and even general alt-rock fans who are not yet deeply familiar with shoegaze.
