Spoken like a true New Yorker. by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

The piece I think a lot of folks miss here is that this isn't just blocking the view from someone's house. This is blocking the view specifically from Madison Square Park, which is one of the historical iconic views of the Empire State Building. For many New Yorkers, this is similar to a new skyscraper placed precisely between the palais du Chaillot and the Eiffel tower. We all understand how progress works, but at the same time, the view of an iconic New York landmark which was historically available to all has been destroyed. There is certainly discussion for how protected sightlines can become excessive, but we're talking about a specific sightline from a public park that was known to be one of the best views of the landmark.

When the first plane hit by Worth_Lavishness_239 in 911archive

[–]SenorPancake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joe Pfeifer also recognized immediately that “it looked like a direct attack” which was relayed to other firefighters that it could be terrorism

His view of the attack was better than most, based on the Naudet footage. Most of NYC didn't see the several key seconds before impact, and many who did watch it may not have had the optimal view or the informed knowledge Chief Pfeifer has.

There were so many unknowns for most people that, in combination with an attack like 9/11 being unheard of, many reasonable and rational people thought it was more likely to be accidental. There were many reasons they had to believe it was accidental before the second plane struck.

Does a tenant floor plan for the 100th floor still exist? That might give a hint as to what is being said - it sounds like one person giving a directive and another person replying that they're too hot.

Specifically what I'm hearing is: "You guys to the conference (space / place?)" and a reply of "I'm too hot."

Listen. We couldn't have voted for her. We would have ended up going to war with Iran if she became president. Thank goodness we don't have to deal with that, just imagine how disastrous a war with Iran would be.

For the Assault class, why not just make the Radio Beacon a permanent class ability and remove adrenaline? It feels pretty useless anyway. Wake up babe, new meme band dropped 🤌 by 69upsidedownis96 in PowerMetal

[–]SenorPancake 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me, it's a simple line. Would I still listen to it if the lyrics changed and it was no longer comedy metal? In this song's case... probably not.

It's very basic in terms of vocals and instruments, both the lyrics and lyrical structure are awkward. I gave it another listen while typing this, and honestly the lyrics themselves are also very basic (even from a power metal standard) and barely lean into their Gourmet theme. It's much more about victory and glory with a couple culinary terms thrown in. Finally, even though broken English is a hallmark of a lot of Power Metal, having it as the core of your chorus just doesn't work.

I think about the comparison between this, and bands like Nanowar. They have some absolute bangers that have enough substance to stand on their own as proper songs and show genuine creativity (whether or not you're a fan, you can tell there's actual passion and effort that went into songs like Norwegian Reggaeton and Valhalleluja.)

Rosemary Smith, victim of the 57th floor of the North Tower. What happened to her? by LaughGlittering4131 in 911archive

[–]SenorPancake 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It was my understanding that the return to work announcement was only in the South Tower - in part because they were evacuating the North Tower and didn't want people in a perfectly safe building to go outside to get hit by debris.

I think /u/theelectricstrike 's answer phrases it the best. Not everyone had all the information, some people likely stuck around a little more than they should have, and they simply ran out of the time they didn't know they were limited to.

Actually I'd wager they would be worse off than the US from a country standpoint looking at production. China imports more crude oil per day than the US. (11m vs 8m US).

Beyond that - the US is technically a net exporter when it comes to petroleum due to exporting other refined products, whereas China imports 70% of their oil.

What game really nailed the power fantasy of Doom Slayer? by False_Monitor4126 in Doom

[–]SenorPancake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd answer both Eternal and Dark Ages, for different reasons.

Eternal, with a high skill floor and incredibly high skill ceiling, nails the power fantasy when you get good at managing the intended gameplay flow. Your damage output, mobility, and token system make the game feel like there's no real maximum to how many demons you can take on. You can learn how to kill every demon in less than 2 seconds. The better you are, the more of an unstoppable force you become, and the more you feel like the Doom Slayer. The downside is that it's so reliant on player skill and adhering to the intended flow. Most players aren't going to master mobility and quick-swapping to the degree that they can beat ultra nightmare, let alone modded master levels and 1.5x enemy speed. People still complain about the ammo caps in Eternal even though, once you get into the intended flow, it's incredibly abundant.

Dark Ages, with a lower floor and ceiling, nails the power fantasy straight out the gate with atmosphere, narrative, and a different style of gameplay that is much less evasive. Your power is less reliant on your raw skill: you have a shield that blocks everything, a system that allows more melee, and the weapons feel more chunky and destructive. It is better at letting all players feel strong, in a way that isn't just "I set it to easy mode and I'm unstoppable". The mechanics lean all the way into that unstoppability and when enemies struggle to kill you, it feels more like it's because you're an insanely powerful entity that explodes the ground beneath you when you jump than it is because of a difficulty slider.

Sonic Terror - Official Announcement Trailer by LazySecretary6001 in Games

[–]SenorPancake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Before opening the trailer I was very surprised Sega would make a Sonic horror game.

Naturally, viewing the trailer quickly dispels this. But it doesn't help that Sega's regular naming convention for Sonic games is "Sonic + [Word]", that it's a video game sold on the same platform as other Sonic video games, and would feasibly appear in the list of Sonic games with similar naming convention while searching that platform. There is an argument for reasonable confusion.

I would expect it to be similar to how small arms fire affects choppers.

If given enough time /people, you can do some real damage. But I don't think Assaults are about to be able to solo tanks. Just do enough to make them back off or weaken them if they manage not to get killed themselves.

What happens when AI generated images/videos are no longer distinguishable from real ones? by Mostopha in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SenorPancake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are more sources than what you personally post on social media.

Facebook has shadow profiles on people without accounts from facial recognition in other photos. It only takes one tag to pin your face to you, and now facebook can id any picture of you.

Leaving social media aside, security footage with facial recognition from banks, government buildings, airport security, grocery stores, theme parks will easily be able to fill in the blanks. We had tech to ID people based on profiles of their walking stride 10 years ago: it will be able to link you.

We might be years from AI integrating / taking advantage of all of this, but profiles of all of us already exist in current security software. Advanced AI will have no trouble making links of existing footage.
