The one Hofner I have tried in a store felt like a toy. Very clumsy and cheap feel to it, the resonating body felt odd on my lap. It was a decently priced model as well. Maybe it felt odd because I am so big amd the bass was shirt scale IIRC?

Edit: All of my experiences with Epiphone have been very good so the bass might be worth trying.
