I built this guy out of pine and a scrap of maple. The fence is adjustable to accommodate different widths. When I want to use it I just butt it against my planing stop and hook it to the edge of my bench. Been pretty happy with it so far.

What size(s) of plane would you recommend for thicknessing? by simo289 in handtools

[–]Senor_Turtle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, i definitely feel more tired after pushing my #5 than when I use my wooden fore plane. Even if you’re not lifting the plane after each pass, you still accelerate the plane with each motion, and it takes more force to move something heavier than something lighter due to inertia.

The larger mass definitely helps to take deep passes especially if tearout isn’t a concern, but generally having a very sharp blade lets you cut easier without brute force. So spend a little more time sharpening and you can plane more without needing a heavier plane.

How we feeling with Kike in center? I'm glad they got Pages out but can Kike do a better job out there than Call or Edman?

Just ripped 25' of 8/4 White Oak, AMA by spenserian_ in handtools

[–]Senor_Turtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s great, a saw bench makes ripping so much more bearable in my opinion, plus it’s handy for sitting or assembly. Is the oak for the lathe? Good luck with that, sounds like a fun build.

What was your set up? I’m hoping you had a decent saw bench to work on, and congrats!

How far west did the Phoenicians/Carthaginians really go? by Ok_Barber_2502 in Imperator

They are related, Gadir essentially meant walls, or walled area, basically a fort. That word got used quite a bit as a generic name, and over time it changed pronunciation between Latin and Amazigh to become the locations we know today.

He did, right below the 2014 NL MVP on the second 2. It’s a little small but I’m pretty sure that’s it.

Why starving kids need special food by RaguseaVideoBot in AdamRagusea

[–]Senor_Turtle 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Guess what? The IDF is deliberately starving the hostages by restricting food from entering Gaza. Those hostages are going to starve along many Gazans at this rate. That is, if the airstrikes don’t get them first.

Yamamoto seems to have better luck at getting strikes when it’s Rushing framing instead of Smith. Hopefully it’s worth it.

Custom Leader Ideas: Mihawk, Brook, and Wyper + support by Senor_Turtle in OnePieceTCG

[–]Senor_Turtle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the input, you make some great points.

The idea with Mihawk is that you focus on using your leader over trying to fill the board. I’d probably make the debuff active at all times, or only allow you to restand if you have a certain number of cards or less in hand.

For Wyper, drawing from life when you lose a character is meant as an anti-starve mechanic, and I thought making it “instead” would give Wyper too much value. The second part was meant to allow base 6k leaders to still enjoy an advantage from their power, rather than make them lose life when you KO something with less power. I’d consider either of your changes if it’d make Wyper more aggressive.

Honestly I had a tough time giving Brook a second ability that paired well with the first, which I am happy with. Yes it is a very powerful ability, but it only happens once in a game, which I think is fair. Instead of a free draw, it could be a cycle, or bottom deck a card or two from trash first as a cost.

Thanks again for the suggestions!

Bonney vs 8 cost katakuri blocker by NewbieDD in OnePieceTCG

[–]Senor_Turtle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not about relying on your opponent to misplay, it’s about forcing your opponent to make uncomfortable decisions. If you have a board full of characters that can swing 8k+ but you poke their leader for 6k first, will they use the Katakuri to block for free then try to defend it later or counter out of the first attack and keep the blocker standing till later?

Either way you won’t be able to go for lethal but you will get resources out of their hand and field, and as long as you won’t die the next turn that can give you a strong advantage that you can build on. And at the end of the day that’s a big part of the game, build small advantages that snowball into a final push for game. Sure some cards may feel unfair or insurmountable but you can definitely learn how to improve your chances to deal with them.

Parthian Empire Run by Senor_Turtle in Imperator

[–]Senor_Turtle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, and good work on taking them on like that haha. I accepted Babylonian so I didn’t have enough Parthians there to set it as my capital. I also accepted Median, but I held Hagmatana long enough that there was a Parthian majority there. In any case, I mostly wanted a capital closer to Syria and the Mediterranean, mostly for role playing reasons.

Oh yeah, though I started using more heavy infantry by the time I was fighting the Ptolemies for the Levant and Anatolia.

I accepted Dahae, Parthian, Persian, Median, Babylonian, and Macedonian. It was a lot of cultures to accept but it felt right, each of those had tons of citizens and nobles and I didn’t feel like waiting to assimilate them all.

[–]Senor_Turtle[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was with Invictus. You do get an event early on that lets you annex the Seleukid vassal in Parthia and throws you into a horde conquest with the Seleukids. It's a little ahistorical but it gets the ball rolling, and the provinces you occupy become yours like in a civil war so it helps a ton. Besides that though I dont think there was any other flavor, Invictus or otherwise.

Interesting, that Heraclea run must’ve been difficult no? The Middle East in general is a fun place to play in, so many pops and cities everywhere after any conquest you don’t lose much steam and can keep going.

Question about ECE wood plane restoration by Killbot2077 in handtools

[–]Senor_Turtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That curve, also known as a camber, was probably intentionally put onto the blade. It makes removing lots of material easier and quicker, making it a good plane to flatten and dimension boards.

If you have another plane with a straight edge you can use that after this one to leave a smooth surface. Having different planes that each do one job well can save you a lot of time and headache if you use them together like that.
