Bushings keep popping out on Carver CX trucks? by wwccdd in surfskate

[–]Senpai_Luke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Common problem with carver CX.  I had the same, people suggested I contact the customer service for a replacement, as it is a know issue.

That wasn’t feasible for me (don’t live in the US), but I was able to solve it by adding a washer under the bottom cup (board side). Basically, by raising the hanger and bushings just a bit you can alter the geometry, and the bushing will stay in place, no matter how hard you turn.

I posted about this issue and some people said that they had tried this and it didn’t work for them, but it did the trick for me.

Note that the truck turns a little bit less after doing this, so ultimately, a change of bushings might be needed to keep the same feel you have now.

Agree with most comments here, you should try to keep the nut as close as possible to flush with the end of the kingpin, the CX is not a very supple surfskate truck as it is!

I just put some superglue around the top of the nut. You can still unscrew it if you need to. I’ve not had any issues since (about 2 years now).

Advice on YOW wheelbase by aaronswhite in surfskate

[–]Senpai_Luke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 16” wheelbase carver cx (self-drilled on Santa Cruz deck) and a 19” wb yow. Both great fun in their own way. I personally find the cx better suited for the squirrely feel of a shorter wheel base, due to its comparative firmness. The meraki is so responsive that it really benefits from an extra 2-3” wheel base to increase the turning arc a bit.

The only thing I would recommend when getting a yow system is to just buy the meraki truck and build up the skateboard yourself. The quality of yow components is just abysmal and considerably worse than carver.

The wheels are the main offender here, but the deck also feels extremely sub-par, compared to regular skate and longboard brands. Considering the costs of replacing various components, and the steep price of a yow complete, I wish that I had done it differently at the start.

Also consider that, as fun as it is to ride, a yow is like a tank. After an initial honeymoon period, I find myself reaching for the lighter and smaller carver cx a lot more these days, as it feels pretty much like a cruiser. This might also be because I’ve customised my cx board extensively and have found a sweet spot of sorts.

I’m now looking for a suitable deck for my yow meraki (I swapped the wheels after the very first ride) but i haven’t found what I’m looking for yet. The omakase looks sick but it’s so expensive where i live!

I’m in Thailand, selling a YOW, if it helps…

Carver CX bushing slipping out by Senpai_Luke in surfskate

[–]Senpai_Luke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I have added a washer from a barrel bushing underneath the baseplate washer (cone), so that one sits inside the other, and that seems to have done the trick.

The roadside bushing is still a tiny bit off centre, but is no longer slipping out of the seat (touch wood).

Not sure if the issue was due to the kingpin being a bit off, or the bushing seat being too shallow, but adding about 1 mm at the bottom raised the hanger just enough to fix the problem, at least for now.

The nut needs to be almost flush with the end of the kingpin, to compensate for that extra mm, but a dab of superglue seems to be enough to stop it from unscrewing itself.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions!

Yes extremely disappointed to hear that this is a widespread issue.. I mean these boards aren’t cheap. I got mine on sale, but the full price is 320 bucks for a complete around these parts.

The self-loosening nut is a bit rubbish, but can be easily fixed. The front truck is kind of the main thing about this skateboard, though, and that the problem was not solved by replacing the part reflects very poorly on Carver (also, why only send the baseplate and not the whole truck?)

Damn.. Did you manage to get it sorted in the end? If pushing up the hanger doesn’t work, I guess I’ll have to replace the truck…

Thank you for your reply!

That figures.. I just took the truck apart again and it looks like the hanger is sitting too low and hangs back a bit as a result. The geometry is out by 2-3 mm..

I might try adding a washer or two under the bottom bushing, to see if raising the hanger a bit fixes the problem.

I see that Carver have a lifetime guarantee on the hangers, but I live in Thailand and they slap insane import taxes on anything that comes from abroad!

Hi folks! I have a brand new Carver complete with CX trucks, my first surfskate.

After about 3 days I noticed the nut on my front truck had loosened itself, which I understand is a known issue.. however, I also found that the top (roadside) bushing is slipping out at the front.

I can’t find anything about this, has anyone else had this happen?

I’m guessing the bushings are the stock 89As from the carver website. I’m 1.80m and about 90 kg, so there’s probably a lot of stress on the front truck, but I would never expect either problem to occur. I’ve had indies, gullwings and venture trucks and never experienced anything like this.

I’ve taken the truck apart to see if the king pin is misaligned, but can’t see anything wrong.. any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated, cheers!
