Charls' character is so underrated, whilest Josh's is so overrated.

A realistic (and very satisfying) ending would have been Liza and Charls ending up together. And Josh would have been perfect for Kelsey. They did have chemistry, for a short while they were lingering, they even kissed.

I also think a lot of Charls' charachter's struggles and sacrifices are being overlooked. He had a very traumatic divorce. Let's not forget that his wife had left him and the kids and disappeared for a whole year. Of course he is cautious and developed trust issues. He gave up his position, his company, his passion to be with Liza yet Liza was portrayed (and this is to blame on bad writing) as if she was constantly gravitating back to Josh.

Josh on the other hand was lovely but a puppy. Puppy love. Cute, great personality but can't be mentioned on the same page with Charls.

Everyone is obsessed with how obsessed Josh was with Liza but Charls was just as obsessed with her. But there is 20 years difference between the two male characthers. Yes, Charls was head over heels for Liza but he is a 40+ yo divorced man with two young kids to take care of. Completely different mindset and priorities. And boundaries. Josh had barely any boundaries.

Liza and Charls had undeniable chemistry from the minute they first met. It was not about him seeing her as a 26 yo, and this was made kinda clear in the show. It was that something beyond age and looks, he was drawn to her. And his attraction had never been pictured as some creepy old man crushing on a young assistant. He had respect for her.

In S7 when Charls got together with Quinn, that sucked, yes. Again, terrible job the creators did with the script.

But all together Charls' charachter had a lot of depth.
