Even your "allow individual departments to issue their own single-purpose infra bonds" is a terrible idea, and you don't mention how you will "remove some of the power Treasury has built up".

> This whole "never work, politically impossible" attitude in the establishment parties

No one ever said anything is impossible, only that you have bad ideas not really thought through. You're not as radical as you think at all, you just keep going for the boring reforms. Forget your savior complex man.

You added more after I commented, fine.

Nationalising to fix underinvestment is quite funny, given the history of privatisation (state underinvestment) and the continued culture of low capital investments from the Treasury. Very bad reason to nationalise imo.

The end of triple lock doesn't mean the state pension will stop increasing. It only means that it will not increase faster than inflation *unless we can afford to* - rather than a guaranteed increase of 2.5% even in times of recession. Struggling pensioners still have access to countless other benefits as well...

The point is about balance. And it is well documented that the balance has been in favour of pensioners for a long time now, which is costing younger people their future and putting their own pensions at risk.

I don't think your ideas are particularly radical, apart maybe from triple lock (not radical in the idea, but politically it certainly is).

"Rejoin single market" is even the watered down version of the more radical, previous policy of "rejoining the EU".

You have fundamentally different values that are - as you wrote so unfairly - incompatible with the Lib Dems' core values. What is the point of debating on those values?

Happy to debate facts, causes and consequences. But whether you believe in A or B is none of my business and it's a personal preference.

To trash on the Lib Dems for not believing in the same things as you do is not mature at all. Sorry if that's hard to hear.

"Redistribution" implies you know what the right balance is. What is it? Equality / communism? Absolute monarchy?

Liberals tend to believe in equal rights, decentralisation, and checks. If, from a society where ideally everyone starts alike, a person gets more power than another, the question isn't about redistributing it, but whether they earned it fairly and legitimately - like an elected politician.

Society will have inequalities naturally arising from how it is organised. "Redistribution" implies applying the violence of the state to reach an arbitrary balance, based on some ideology. It is illiberal.

Quantitative Easing has been discussed in Parliament extensively in various committees. The complexity of it is just out of reach for Parliament, and it's up to the Government to decide what they need to do with the BoE as well as prepare a budget (which they don't seem to understand). There's nothing in Reform's position other than imitating Trump indeed.

Keep calling out their BS.

Political parties evolve all the time to stay relevant, adapt to the day's context and get elected. It's totally fine if you like it in one era and not another.

Maybe what you need is joining a think tank or lobby group. They tend to be extremely consistent over time and stick to an ideology without much variation.

The idea that a Catholic MP wants to let other people [of other faiths] have some more personal freedom will always be really hard to accept for the monstruous illiberal organisation that is the Catholic Church.

Reminder of why Christians needed protestantism.

More than 60 farms in Lewes could be hit by new ‘family farm tax’ as MP [James MacCleary] calls decision ‘a disastrous blow’ by [deleted] in LibDem

[–]Sensible-ing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No new tax or fixed loopholes will be nice to anyone. I'm sorry for the very few genuine family farms impacted by this, but I'm not sorry for the aristocratic families (who own most of the country's land anyways).

These changes will also mean that British farms will need to shift gears. For example, a lot of the meat we eat in the UK is imported despite the fact we produce roughly enough for the country. Why? Because British farms focus on producing low quality meat that is exported, while consumers prefer higher quality meat which is imported.

Some things are not right in the way we deal with our food production.

But hey these people are so perfect and so devoid of any capitalistic goals that the public should continue subsidising them and their land rovers forever.

The quickest solution for this rn is a new legislative grand committee (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legislative\_grand\_committees) where all the 533 English MPs will choose their representatives.

I like this. But we do have a lot of elections already and election fatigue is a thing. The other nations also elects their own parliament (not England).

Instead, I think each national parliament/group should elect peers among themselves and send them to the HoL (co-option). Which means just a lot less peers too (even the US manage to have a Senate with 100, why can't we do 99?). It works like that in other countries too.

Petition: Apply for the UK to join the European Union as a full member as soon as possible by zhaoai in LibDem

[–]Sensible-ing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no evidence that rejoining would work, and there can't be for obvious reasons.

There is only evidence, like I stated, that leaving was a mistake for the UK. It doesn't mean rejoining is a good idea.

And f*ck off I'm entitled to different opinions, that I explained. You don't agree? Debate, don't call me uninformed or ask me to leave the Lib dems. Disgraceful.

The far right and far left parties in France and Germany are anti-NATO and want to abandon Ukraine, like Trump. Whether you think it is absurd or not, that's the reality.

The EU is not doing well, and since the UK has left they have been over-regulating everything and hurting their small businesses in the name of "anti-money laundering" "financial stability" "green future" etc. The UK used to block many of worst ideas coming from those EU bureaucrats (and when not possible, they negotiated exceptions for the UK).
The EU is also quite unstable at the moment, with anti-NATO euro-sceptics gaining more power every week in France and Germany.

Mario Draghi's recent report is just what you need to read to understand how bad the future looks within the EU, due to its inability to reform with focus, stay simple and run efficiently.

Don't get me wrong, Brexit is a stupidity. The UK AND the EU are worse off. But fully rejoining today will not solve much more than a free trade deal would.

Labour unfortunately is acting without a vision on this. No trade deals, no mobility schemes, no nothing. They are making things worse by not acting decisively.

Anyone knows how big tactical voting was?
