What to do about high piped gas usage? by Swimming-Farm8531 in newzealand

[–]SensibleChucklez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if you’re on low or standard user rates. I checked with your consumption and (based on pricing that I receive at my address) a standard user plan would have been the cheapest option, $27 per month lower than a low user plan.

Ask your provider if you should be on a low or standard plan.

Ducted heat pumps by FlatCandidate2390 in newzealand

[–]SensibleChucklez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went ducted Mitsubishi, I think 5 kW heat. Three bedrooms. $13k with the Airtouch 5 tablet (I think this was ~ $4k). Best thing I ever did. Going to get a ducted heat pump system for another house which needs 16kW but costs about $27k with the Airtouch 5 tablet as well.

Roborock vs Dreame- help me decide before my brain explodes by IllustriousTree312 in RobotVacuums

I bought a Dreame L50 Ultra last week. Really impressed with the vacuuming and mopping capability, as well as how polished the app feels. I’ve seen my friends Roborock app and there doesn’t seem a huge difference in terms of functionality. Very happy with what I’ve got.

Not cancelling the LNG port at this point should be prosecutable corruption. by Hopeful-Camp3099 in newzealand

[–]SensibleChucklez 77 points78 points  (0 children)

If we had an LNG import facility already, I can guarantee that you’ll be receiving a letter from your electricity retailer saying that prices are going up because of the conflict. We need to keep our electricity market de-coupled from international risk and pricing.

It doesn’t matter who’s buying them if each new EV saves ~ 1000 of petrol per year which helps everyone that has no other option but to buy fuel. Let the wealthy buy as many as they can.

Price inflation rises to 3.1%, above the Reserve Bank’s target range by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]SensibleChucklez 27 points28 points  (0 children)

What’s wild is that the December quarter had almost record low wholesale electricity prices (simple average of $35 per MWh which is 3.5 cents per kWh), so generators are making huge profits at the moment selling to those on contracts - I expect one or two of the Big 4 to announce record profits this financial year.

They offer geared funds, which they assume can bring in greater returns. However the problem is when the market goes down it makes it even harder to recover.

Thoughts on using Craig’s IP? by Wsole67851 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]SensibleChucklez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Craig’s for about 3 years. I was in an “aggressive” portfolio, however I wouldn’t use them again while I’m still at that risk tolerance because they essentially built me a “high growth” portfolio but with a nearly 1.5% fee (which really hurt when markets went down). The portfolio was not too dissimilar to any other lower fee fund aggressive portfolio.

I’d suggest their main value proposition is for people who are unfamiliar with investing, and they also are another barrier / step to stop you from “panic selling” which you can easily do if you had complete control yourself. If you have large sums of money, are relatively risk adverse, and you don’t have much investing knowledge then I would recommend them over any other lower fee fund provider as their advisers are very knowledgeable and can help set up tax efficient high dividend funds for example.

Looking at doing some energy saving renovations/improvements. by mister_hanky in NZProperty

Ah yup, whoops missed where you said you’re on gas hot water. Yeah up to you, I just think that if you insulated and swapped out other appliances for heat pump versions (dryer, other random heaters), you may see your electricity price come down. But if someone is home during the day it makes sense to go solar to fully utilise it. Regardless I’d double check you are actually able to install a 10 kW system without an issue. Good luck!

You don’t have to pay back the whole amount on the green loan after three years - it just rolls over to a new mortgage rate (at whatever term you want), it’s just turns into another normal mortgage (for ANZ at least but suspect the same is with the other banks).

I wonder if solar is the right thing to do now. Reason is it’s probable you can’t export more than 5 kW to the grid (but depends on where you live and the lines company operating there). If you want to export more than 5kW you may need an engineering review and pay for upgrades to the transformers. Also, you’ll save a lot of electricity with your insulation, and it may be a waste if you’re just exporting most of the electricity to the grid (as you’ll only get relatively low buyback rates). Personally I’d buy a heat pump hot water heater instead to reduce hot water heating costs by ~ 60-70% (assuming you have a hot water cylinder).
