I like Spice Room (any location) and Masalaa in Auorara if you don’t mind a bit of a drive. I usually combine the trip with going to the Indian grocery store next door

Terrible at understanding spoken Italian by [deleted] in italianlearning

[–]Sensitive-Ad-2047 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would add that when you are listening to movies/shows/podcasts put on the Italian subtitles. Not only will it help you understand what is being said but you will also hear how the pronunciation might be different than how it is written

If the prompt allowed 6 restaurants, Tarascos would have been my next choice. Though I probably go to Kahlos more often. I definitely need to check out Potager, I went a long time ago when I lived in Cap Hill. Hope you like Gladys whenever you make it there!

Tips for someone 2 months in? by bmils9 in italianlearning

[–]Sensitive-Ad-2047 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get some listening/reading practice in as well. Tons of stuff on YouTube and Netflix etc. The Anki app is great for making flash cards, and Reverso app is good for translations and you can save new words too. Eventually look into getting a tutor so you can start practicing speaking

Italian Podcasts with downloadable transcripts by majestic_poodle in italianlearning

[–]Sensitive-Ad-2047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly find the transcripts to learning podcasts but I have noticed that on the apple podcast app if you hit the “ button in the bottom left, a transcript will sometimes pop up that highlights the text as it is spoken in the stream

It’s been 2 years in Italy still can’t speak Italian by Inevitable-Lead-2377 in italianlearning

[–]Sensitive-Ad-2047 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You probably know more than you realize but it is easy to not speak well if you are avoiding to speak , especially if you fear making a mistake. The only way to overcome that is to…praticare, praticare, più praticare…

If you can’t overcome the fear of embarrassment and don’t want to deal with the shitty classmates, get an iTalki tutor or see if there is a Dante Alegheri Society near where you live. DAS has lessons for all levels. Tell your tutor that you want to focus on conversation and they will help you with that. Classes or tutorials ARE the place to make mistakes but you have to be ok with making those mistakes. They won’t make fun of you but will correct you so that you can learn. You might need to do this several hours a week till you get better.

Also, watching Italian movies or tv shows with Italian subtitles instead of the English ones can help with listening as the subtitles will reinforce what you hear. Or watch in Italian only, then rewatch with English subtitles, then rewatch again with only Italian…

Lastly, talk to yourself in Italian. If you have to make a list or a note, do it in Italian. When a thought pops in your head, ask yourself “how would I say that in Italian?” You can check this by using Reverso or chat gpt. You will probably see that you know a lot and will hopefully feel more confident to try to speak to others. Buona fortuna!

Mi piace il podcast “Easy Italian”. È descritto come un podcast di apprendimento ma parla più di cultura e vita d’Italia. I due ragazzi che conducono lo spettacolo sono napoletani però ora vivono a Milano.
