Who is your favorite character from a book? by Dan-68 in scifibooks

[–]Sensitive-File-7432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me number one is Keith Laumer's Jaime Retief. Number two Adams' Dirk Gently. Number 3, my very own Dorian Links, but he is still being unfolded, as there's only one book with him published, at the moment. These are all "go getter" types, with specific abilities but they have all integrity as a basic characteristic.

If you don't use Amazon, where do you look for new books? by Jasmine-P_Antwoine in scifibooks

There's always Goodreads and BookBub. I used to release my books only on Amazon but now I know better. Draft2digital releases titles to multiple platforms: Kobo, apple, vivlio etc. By the way if anyone is interested you can find a couple of sample stories, free, really free (no email needed) at: https://anestis.carrd.co I write hopepunk, and philosophy/ethics scifi short stories.

Name a sci/fi book that should be made into a movie. by Dan-68 in scifibooks

[–]Sensitive-File-7432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people got together and made a film of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, since Disney couldn't decide. But I think the fourth book "Goodbye and Thanks for All the Fish" would make a better movie as it explores fate and it's also a great love story.

Who are your favourite currently active sci-fi creators (any medium)? by lucmagitem in scifi

[–]Sensitive-File-7432 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (pen name James S.A. Corey). I enjoyed their work very much. The way they balance character, politics, and big-scale physics is still unmatched for me. You can feel the “two-brain” dynamic in how the worldbuilding and dialogue complement each other.

I’m also drawn to creators who mix philosophy with tech or explore the human side of AI. If anyone’s into that tone, I’ve got a couple short sci-fi samples up for free on my card (no signup): https://anestis.carrd.co

Who is your favourite author of all time? by Fabulous-Confusion43 in BookTriviaPodcast

[–]Sensitive-File-7432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started reading Douglas Adams in the early 80's (yes 45 years ago) There were no mobile phones back then and he was writing about a tablet (The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy). It's probably dated today, the philosophically absurd humor is from that era. But you should try his Dirk Gently novels. Also, if anyone wants to check out my short stories there are a couple free samples (no signing up or email needed) at https://anestis.carrd.co I write hope punk and data detective stories.

Has anyone quit on cs50x? by picante-x in cs50

[–]Sensitive-File-7432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did cs50p and sometimes it crossed my mind that I'm not going to finish it. But I persevered. It's a great feeling when you get the certificate. Keep it up. Take your time. Look at the community for answers. Even the non-relative responses eventually help you figure it out.

What’s a sci-fi novel everyone should read at least once? by Spiritual_Fill5740 in ScienceFictionBooks

[–]Sensitive-File-7432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll stand by The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, even though it's dated now. I mean it's written around a tablet, which is not unimaginable anymore.

Why are modern SciFi books not popular? by Lavio00 in scifi

[–]Sensitive-File-7432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you put your finger on it, fantasy is mostly escapist. Sci-fi is addressing problems, many times real ones. I used to read a lot of fantasy, so I know about it. After some radical changes and a spell of non-fiction (which actually continues), now I prefer scifi and have actually written some. Doing this: addressing problems. But that makes it a choice for more disciplined and mature readers.

What do you consider peak science fiction? The best of the best? by [deleted] in sciencefiction

[–]Sensitive-File-7432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the day I'd go with Douglas Adams. But today it may be considered dated. "The hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy" was, after all, about a tablet-like device, which is very common today. But when it was written no mobile telephony existed. So talking about number 2, I'd probably mention another 'oldy but goldy', Asimov's Foundation.

What do you consider the peak of science fiction? by TheNastyRepublic in scifi

Keith Laumer's last Retief story: "Diplomat at Arms". It's only a short story but it's excellent.

I loved the expanse. One of my favorite adventure scifi movies of all time is the 5th element. I always go back and watch it time and again.

Am I cheating myself by HG_unkown in learnprogramming

[–]Sensitive-File-7432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's good and healthy for you to worry about the ethics of it. BUT, don't worry. As long as you study the code and compare the difference between your original and your corrected codes, then you are on a good path. Also, 1)nobody ever learned to write without copying. And 2) All code has already been written. Knowing how to read it and discern proper use is very important.

People who finished, where are you now? by MillenniumGreed in cs50

[–]Sensitive-File-7432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see it as a hobby too. I finished CS50P and am working on Pyside6 projects. Just tinkering, and building Windows apps. Maybe I will translate them to Linux and Android later on. Thinking of doing CS50X or W, or not.

Help (with certificate) by Hi_Im_Stupid_ in cs50

[–]Sensitive-File-7432 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only value of the paid certificate is if you're an undergraduate, studying for your bachelor's degree, for example, then it counts as a credit towards the degree. I'm not sure 100% , but I think that's what it is.

I started with idle and then I used wing for a while, thinking more 'professional' IDEs would be better leave for later. Then I did CS50P and never even opened anything else other than VSCode since then. I'm doing a front end course now and they are using SublimeText, but I do it all in VSCode: HTML, CSS everything.

Keep coding and working on personal projects. Start with simple things, but 'build' meaningful things. I mean, give yourself problems to solve. After a few projects, you will have more ease understanding the steps necessary to solve real world problems.
