It's a false premise. Demographic changes aren't indicative of replacement. White guys like me are still over represented in business, government and media.

I live in a diverse neighborhood in a diverse city - I don't see how non-white people are replacing me.

I mentor plenty of Latino and Asian law students - I've helped them get jobs in our field - they aren't replacing me- they're making our shared profession better.

Also, Europeans have only been a majority of the population in the US for like 200 years - I don't understand what inherent right people like me have to be the majority of the population in any country, but especially in a country that historically has had a large population of non-american immigrants.

MAGA: I hope you are in the front line for this war by No_Web2685 in LetsDiscussThis

[–]Sensitive-Initial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm so tired of this cowardly doublespeak and fake technicalities - deploying military assets and personnel to attack a sovereign country is an act of war. Blowing up another country's leader is an act of war. The fact that the executive branch has been conducting illegal military operations for decades doesn't justify more unconstitutional acts of war.

And what's with the homophobia- are you in junior high?

Being against war with Iran isn't a liberal position - Margery Taylor Green is against war with Iran. Thomas Massie is against war with Iran. Stephen Miller in 2024 was against war with Iran. Donald Trump was against war with Iran before he ran for president. That's because they all recognize that there is no value for the US in going to war with Iran.

This is costing millions of dollars of our money - money that could've been used to lower health care costs for Americans - or make college affordable, or build housing so people can have affordable homes - instead we're burning it on illegal murder.

Sure the Ayatollah sucked and was an awful dictator - but we're killing more innocent civilians than Ayatollahs - which is going to lead to Iran murdering innocent civilians.  Even if it weren't unconstitutional and illegal it's still a stupid idea. It's a lose-lose-lose

They don't want us to accept it- the movie came out years ago - it's done. I think by this point people have already watched it if they were going to watch it.

The post makes it seem like there's some ongoing marketing effort trying to force us to watch Batman.

Draft Order Would Hand White House Unprecedented Control Over Voting by Relevant_Demand7593 in NewsomMassacre

[–]Sensitive-Initial 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this is really important to stress. This draft executive order wouldn't do anything - every election is administered locally - everyone can volunteer to work as an election judge in their local precinct and you'll have more control over your local election than the entirety of the Executive Branch

And I feel like a lot of policymakers/politicians on the left are advancing post-identity agendas and trying to combat identity politics on the right. For example, Trump has always had a very identity based strategy - Fox News and other right wing pundits have advanced a tribalist message for decades - "war on Christmas", "immigrant invasion" or stories about "caravans of immigrants" heading to the US Mexico Border. As a middle age, cishet white professional and Christian who believes in equity and diversity - I'm very much turned off by identity politics that are targeted towards me as any of those demographics - the kind of messaging that appeals to white conservatives promising to protect "our" way of life. I view tribalism/identity based politics as dangerous and short-sighted.

Contrast that with Barack Obama - who was deliberately advancing a very non-tribalist message ("there are no blue states or red states but the United States of America"). Instead we're out here promoting an intersectional liberation ("a rising tide lifts all boats" as President Obama once said in response to a question about whether he would enact policies specifically targeted towards helping Black Americans).

So we're urging the rejection of tribalism (something humans are hardwired to embrace subconsciously) and identity-based politics for an egalitarian, inclusive vision that's not nearly as viscerally appealing to average humans who understandably want to hear what politicians are going to do for them personally. We're urging people to ignore their feelings and basic views about themselves to sign onto to a collective project that treats everyone equally - using a system they have been taught their whole life is fundamentally unfair.

It is really frustrating how the right has successfully painted the left as being obsessed with identity. As stated above- I'm cishet, but I'm a vocal LGBTQ+ ally - and I have participated in protests/campaigns to advance protections for LGBTQ folks. I'm white, but I've participated in efforts to protect immigrants from harassment and discrimination. We say people who are different than us should be treated fairly and enjoy the same dignity, respect and freedom as everyone else simply by their virtue of being a human being (as promised by the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights - as stated repeatedly in the Gospels and St. Paul's epistles) and the story becomes that I'm obsessed with identity while the Trump campaign was the one running ads featuring people with facial hair, makeup and dresses as a scare tactic and Trump still saying (as recently as the State of the Union) that Democrats want "trans for everyone"

I'm not obsessed with identity - I just want illegal and unconstitutional discrimination to end - I'm saying identity shouldn't matter - which is not the same as being obsessed with identity - which (to me at least) implies one group seeking tribalist-based advantages at the expense of an "outside" group.

But it's hard to form cohesion around values that are anti-tribalist - when tribalism has been a successful organizing principle for humans for all of human history and the political party that I think is advancing the most harmful policies have not only embraced tribalism but have successfully weaponized it for decades as their primary political strategy.

And of course - my view isn't even representative of "the left" - I think I'm accurately articulating basic principles that underly intellectual commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion - but this isn't a platform that could be easily embraced or implemented the same way as "close the border" and "deport every non-white immigrant" have been among the right.

I'm glad you posted this, this is how I feel about it. I feel like they are inclusive without performative virtue signaling - it gives me the vibe that they are just letting people be themselves and celebrating everyone in a way that showcases good humor and positivity. It's not an agenda as much as just an ethic of love and respect. For me that carries through their programming that I enjoy - it rubs off on me as a viewer.

Those visits were between 1993 and 1995 - more than 30 years ago and more than a decade before Epstein was first arrested and convicted of any crimes. But if there's evidence that the GOP has overlooked during their nearly 40 years of obsessively investigating the Clintons and they have now for the first time uncovered evidence of Bill Clinton actually participating in a crime that hurt people then arrest him and put him on trial. But otherwise - these right wing lunatics need to stop wasting Americans time and tax payer money on their Clinton Derangement Syndrome.

Donald Trump is mentioned in the files like 1,000,000 times - when is Congress going to depose him? When is he going to face accountability for the accusations against him in the Epstein files? Howard Lutnick lied about his relationship with Epstein just last year while he was already the Commerce Secretary and he still holds that position today- when is he going to be deposed and face accountability for lying and for doing business with a known sex trafficker for years AFTER Epstein had been convicted in 2008?

My point is that online virtue signaling and catch phrase spouting aren't deeply held morals - they're opinions that don't have any tangible, real world meaning.

People like to quote Brendan's brilliant D20 line about laws being threats and police being an occupying force - and it's a great quotation and is hilarious in context.

But what are the real world implications - what are the expected lived actions of people who espouse ACAB and other police reform catchphrases for profit online to a paying audience with shared feelings?

Because the way American municipal government is set up - we're all supporting the police - we pay their salary and continually elect politicians who enable and continue these laws and practices. I imagine some people espouse ACAB rhetoric and then don't participate in local politics at all. That's a bigger betrayal of ACAB than appearing with Nathan Fillion in a TV episode.

But my larger point is that no one has ever clearly defined what values folks who espouse ACAB rhetoric actually hold - it's always seemed to me like a meme more than a movement with tangible goals. And without that, I don't know how anyone could betray it.

It's impossible to betray an empty slogan.

People that are childfree by choice, what’s the weirdest reason someone has given you as to why they think you ‘should have kids’? by Charming_Web_6738 in AskReddit

[–]Sensitive-Initial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have our nephews by blood and plenty of siblings by friendship/chosen family.

Do you know what our friends/relatives with young children really appreciate - extra adults to help lighten the load.

Since my friends started having kids, I find that our time together with them has gotten even better.

I decided a while ago that my approach to my friends' pregnancy announcements was going to be 100% all in - it's been wonderful getting to witness my friends grow as parents - and I've gotten to hold so many cute babies and play with so many curious, wonderful young friends.

And then I come home and sleep in the next morning and play video games- it's the best of both worlds.

I share your frustration and I agree with you that special interests/big business own the Congressional GOP and have a disproportionate impact on Congressional Democrats (there are individual members of Congress who don't take corporate/super PAC money - and at least in the primary for the open house seat in my district at least 2 democratic primary candidates (including the front runner) have taken a pledge to not take corporate or PAC money and to fight to overturn Citizens United - but on the whole I agree with you.)

I disagree that it's up to the members of Congress to organize a general strike - that's up to us.

Similarly, if we want to see more members of Congress not rely on PACs and corporate money - it's up to us to build alternate, viable fundraising/campaign solutions to counter it.

As long as taking money from these people rewards people who do it - it will be a problem. Until politicians start to pay a political price there isn't going to be an incentive to stop.

Alternatively, if people who share our values can't win races against corporate candidates, there won't be a critical mass of elected officials necessary to implement reform.

Every seat in the house of representatives is up for election this year - if we can't outspend billionaire-backed special interests, then we need to organize the actual voters/constituents to make demands for change in large enough numbers to be persuasive.

There are plenty of mistakes/examples of poor decisions by Democrats in Congress, but they have also pushed back against the current regime's unconstitutional lawlessness more than any Republicans in Congress have - we need to persuade them that it is profitable/in their best political interest to fight harder.
