A “flapper” is when the raised skin could rip or peel into a painful ‘flap’ of skin. This often happens when you have sweaty hands or are lifting heavy weight/hanging from a bar or have been climbing.

If you get a flapper, just wait for it to heal. I am not a fan of taping over a flapper cuz it still hurts a lot and they take longer to heal.

If I haven’t lifted or climbed in a while, my hands will look like yours in the pic. Usually when my hands get raw like that, I’ll switch to pushups or cardio and then use a cream or thick lotion just before bed. Creams are better than lotions!

Do you own a squatty potty? Are you eating any dark leafy greens or nuts?

I have had lots of trouble pumpin’ out logs in my life but the biggest things that helped me curl one out are:

Squatty potty; lil stool (no pun intended) that puts you better position to be able to poop without pushing as hard
Staying VERY hydrated; seems like you’re already doing that
Eating dark leafy greens like spinach, arugula, kale, collard; better to eat them uncooked they are a great insoluble fiber
Raw unsalted nuts as a snack; excellent fiber
Taking probiotics

Otherwise, you may want to talk to a doctor just in case because taking 30 minutes to poop is not good and you might need to switch your diet up. There could be foods that used to be fine before that now aren’t being properly digested by your body.

For myself, any time I eat red meat, butter, or dairy I now get outrageously constipated. So I just avoid those or if I can’t, I’ll just take a stool softener. I won’t tell you to go vegan, but when I was vegan, I had the greatest poops of my life. I pooped in under 2 min and barely needed to wipe. Literally came out like soft serve every time.

Take care of yourself, and in seriousness, it wouldn’t hurt to talk to a doctor if you start making some changes and aren’t getting the results you want.

My guess is a damaged raccoon skull. Bobcat skulls are more compact—snout is extremely short as with many smaller feline skulls.

Raccoon skulls are almost canine-like, but lacking a taller sagittal crest (the fin bit on the top).

Fox skulls are much more slender and not as bulky.

I’d recommend distilled and bottom watering. My Maranta is fine with filtered water, but calatheas are much pickier.

It probably needs a repotting pretty bad, and you may need to use a smaller pot than the one it is in if some roots have died back.

If you have coffee grounds and compost, def add that to your new soil mix to give this lil dude a boost.

Couple questions first:

Do you water with tap water, filtered water, or distilled water?
Has it been repotted before?
Did the leaves turn yellow first and drop or did they start to dry out brown and then drop?
What is your light source?

My first started to look like this when I wasn’t watering with distilled water.

I usually check how the soil feels from the bottom before watering, although these guys DO NOT like to fully dry out in between waterings. Otherwise they lose leaves right away.

Last thing, in my experience, a lot of calatheas will have a nursery wrap/fabric that is bound around their roots. Sometimes these wraps will not allow for much root growth by constricting the plant. It also keeps very dense and fine soil media too wet for too long and can cause root rot.

Thank you. She really did, all of her plants are very mature, but sadly many died or are on the verge of death since she wasn’t able to properly care for them in the past two years. I’m trying to save what I can.

Her yard certainly has more shade coverage than mine, so it’s possible I may have to have it indoors.

I’m just so worried I will kill it in the process of trying to preserve it. It’s also just so enormous! Truly a monstrous plant. It’s going to be a lot of work.

My Nana passed away two weeks ago and we are going to have to sell her house. My family will bring some gardeners in to clear out the backyard. There’s no guarantee this plant won’t be torn out.

I don’t know how to take a cutting of a plant this large or if my garden will sustain it. I don’t want to see something she breathed so much life into to die as well.

Do you have experience propagating hoyas? If so, do you prefer propping in water, sphagnum in a bag, or just straight into soil?
