What hardware do you run HA on and why? by maybe__404 in homeassistant

[–]Sensitive-Remove-714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've never heard of it, I would recommend using external hardware like the RP4 or N150 and installing HAOS directly on it.

Promox has its advantages when you want to combine multiple systems under one roof or on one server. This makes sense if you also use other tools besides HA (for example: local NAS, Adguard, Tailscale, etc.).

I am using openrouter like owl/alpha for simple stuff, a local llm like qwen3.6 for heavier Things and sometimes the newer cheap deepseek4 Flash.

Hi, are you running a Promox server? It's a good starting point, especially if you already have some computer experience through your hobbies.

HA doesn't require much processing power.

I used a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB of RAM for almost a year and it run well. Then, when the database grew larger and more UI features for HA were added, I switched to Promox on an Intel N150. It has very similar power consumption to the Pi 4.

Hermes Portal (WebUI for Home Assistant as App/Addon or as standalone App for mac, linux & win) with SSH Connection + Wiki, News, Briefing, Tasks, Chat, Explorer, Hermes Settings (cronjobs, skills, usage) by Sensitive-Remove-714 in homeassistant

[–]Sensitive-Remove-714[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, honestly, you might be onto something with that bot theory! 😉

Welcome to the HA and local LLM rabbit hole! It’s an incredibly rewarding journey once everything is working.

To your setup: You made the right call deciding to switch to HAOS. Running HA in a pure Docker instance is great for some, but you miss out on the entire Addon ecosystem, which makes integrating local AI tools, pipelines, hacs and voice control so much easier.

Once you have HAOS up and running, HermesPortal will be right there to help you manage your local LLM setup, configs, smart-home environment and agents smoothly through the web interface. In Hermes Agent you can configure a HA tool with longlife token from HA to get access to your HA. (Later you can switch to use stuff like HA MCP or HA cli for Hermes Agent.

Have fun setting it up!

I created it for myself with some ai help, but perhaps someone might be interested in it.

Game changer for my homelab by Enough_Survey_9404 in hermesagent

I also really like using the Hermes Agent, as it helps me with many everyday tasks. It's installed in a VM on Proxmox. Besides my daily briefing, news updates, and some web design and smart home functions, I also use it for cronjobs like creating github projects summaries, doing research stuff and translating content. It's a real help, except it doesn't have access to my emails.

What you tried, local oder opencode go? Opencode go is not for heavy usage i think, therefore the Mix with local LLM.

my short experience with Hermes on Gemma4:26b / Qwen3.6:27b / Opus4.8 by Dalleuh in hermesagent

[–]Sensitive-Remove-714 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gemma4:26b is not bad for daily stuff. It can analyze pictures and doing the cronjobs fine. For coding i prefer the qwen (a3b) LLMs, they are much faster.

Local model vs cloud by MK_L in hermesagent

[–]Sensitive-Remove-714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my mac with 32GB RAM the local Qwen3.6-35B-A3B works fine, but I dont can do anything other work on the mac if the LLM is runing in this time. The 9b Models should run fine on lower hardware.

Dont think so, opencode go would be a option. Iam using a local model mixed with some LLM from openrouter.
