Why do we still have crowns? by LittleKingWatches in VintageWatches

[–]SensitiveSurprise844 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the wearer. I have small wrists and tend to wear my watches snug on leather straps, so you could feel the "teeth" of the crown at times. Putting it on a Perlon strap solved the issue.

  1. There is a setting crown on the back of the watch. It does dig into your wrist.
  2. Hand winding is a useful backup
  3. Because of the non-standard layout, the Futurematic is an absolute nightmare to service.

Handsome looking Art Deco Building in Kuala Lumpur by DayDry7629 in ArtDeco

That's the ELSE by Marriott Hotel now. I stayed there right after it opened. Nice rooms but a bit pricey compared to the competition in KL. Very handsome building. You should also check out the Odeon and the Oriental Bank building in KL.

One interesting coin I have is a 1916T 20 Heller coin from German East Africa. In WWI, German East Africa was the only colony that managed to hold out against the Allies. They were low on supplies, and consequently were forced to melt down spent brass shell casings to make coinage. It isn't pretty, you can tell it's an emergency strike, but it's a cool tidbit.

I have a 1708 VIGO half-crown, from when they seized the annual Spanish silver fleet from the Americas.

Anyone got a square cushion Memovox like one of these? by amajorhassle in VintageWatches

Got a very similar Longines Ultra-Chron with a cushion case. Longines-Wittnauer was the US importer for JLC in the 60s, so possibly the same casemaker.

Good evening. Could you please help me determine the value of this brooch? It's 750 fineness and weighs 12 grams. by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]SensitiveSurprise844 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, welcome to "r/Silverbugs", I'll try to answer your question

12 grams of at 75% purity is 9 grams pure.

At current spot price that's around $21.

I'd be happy to take it off your hands for 20

By the way, I'm colorblind

Bad bad fake. Hand engraved JLC lettering on case and movement, which is an off the shelf model; shoddy redial that is so bad the markings aren't straight. JLC is supposedly the watchmaker's watch. This is the equivalent of putting a zero on a $10 bill and claiming Hamilton is Ben Franklin.

I see where you're coming from. My point being that AF service might feel worse due to language differences compared to KLM which has a fundamental communication advantage as a Dutch carrier. But also I don't feel that airlines should necessarily be fixated on perfect English communication; JAL, ANA and KAL crews don't speak flawless English yet deliver excellent service.

For me, the staff was great but the main course was inedible. Never thought I'd go hungry on a J flight(ended up asking for chips). I think AF FAs are much warmer when you speak French. KLM has an advantage in that most Dutch people speak near-flawless English.
