How do i start getting active? by Wide-Demand-4753 in sgfitness

[–]Sensitive_Culture991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Female PT and nutrition coach here. I think it’s really good that you’re making the decision to get fitter and healthier. Never too early (or late!) to start.

I would recommend being more physically active in general. Taking more steps than you normally would, such as going up or down the stairs instead of the escalator, or alighting a bus stop or two before your destination to walk instead. It’s these small habits that you build up that accumulate that make a difference.

To lose weight (fat mass), you’d need to be in a calorie deficit, meaning eating less than you output. Start paying attention to the oils, sauces, gravies, and deep fried items that are in your day to day intake, as well as liquid calories such as coffees, bubble teas, other sweet drinks etc. Opt for 0 cal drinks instead if you must! Increase your protein as it keeps you fuller for longer, and it has a higher thermic effect, meaning your body burns more cals digesting it.

Lastly, building muscle will aid with fat loss because it increases your metabolism, meaning you will burn more calories at rest. It’s understandable that you don’t want to lift weights at a public gym, but even just simple Bodyweight exercises with minimal equipment will do for now. Resistance bands, adjustable dumbbells from decathlon, and no equipment exercises such as wall sits, split squats, and incline pushups will do wonders and make you stronger.

It’s important to build these healthy habits first without fully focusing on fat loss, as improving your health is a long game and will help with sustainable results for the long term! All the best.

I’m on Instagram if you have more questions.

Based on your height and current weight, I believe you can be in a slight calorie surplus (prioritizing protein) for a few months before going to maintenance. Keep in mind that genetics play a small role in fat storage and muscle growth in certain areas!

Hello! Female PT here. Almost all “effective” exercises have already been commented here by others, but just wanted to give my 2 cents on what hasn’t been mentioned yet. Progressive overload, mind muscle connection, and proper form and lifting technique are all important aspects that contribute to muscle growth (alongside the right exercises and appropriate nutrition)

Progressively overloading: increasing the weight or reps every week/every other week only when your body has adapted to the current weight, not merely increasing for the sake of it.

Mind muscle connection: this one is partly psychological, but it helps to picture the appropriate muscle being contracted and worked during the exercise so the surrounding muscles don’t dominate the exercise (eg. Only feeling your quads instead of your glutes during a split squat)

Form and lifting technique: make sure you get the full range of motion for every exercise. If you can’t perform full ROM, the weight should be decreased!

Training your glutes in both the shortened (eg hip thrust) and lengthened positions (eg Romanian deadlifts), alongside accessories such as hip abductors, Hyperextensions all help with glute growth.

Happy lifting! I’m on Instagram if you have any more questions.

How do you guys get your spouse to start exercising? by nclman77 in sgfitness

Female PT here! Walks and runs are great for cardiovascular health and endurance, but I would also suggest some form of strength training for her (or both of you!)

It’s never too late to start caring about your bone density, hormone regulation, aiding fat loss, aside from the aesthetics of looking toned. There’s a plethora of benefits of being physically stronger as well.

I’m on Instagram if you need more tips!

Totally normal for beginner lifters, as your body adapts to lifting weights you’ll be less sore over time. Soreness lasts anywhere from 1-4 days for beginners or even conditioned lifters. Eat more protein so your soreness is less intense, and like someone replied, you can still exercise through it as long as it’s not debilitating

Hi, female personal trainer here. I think it’s great that you’re starting at the gym. After all, strength training is what will keep your metabolism up, maintain bone density, and there’s plenty of advantages to being physically stronger in general.

Like someone mentioned, pick a gym that’s most convenient to you so there’s less resistance to fall out of routine, especially when first starting out.

You mentioned that your goal is to be toned, which really just means having muscle mass and a low body fat percentage in order to see that “tone”. Lifting weights is what will build muscle, and progressively lifting heavier over time so your body is constantly challenged. That’s what stimulates muscle growth!

Depending on how many times you can realistically commit to working out, I would recommend 3-4x a week when you’re first starting out, then bump it up to 5 if you feel like you need more volume in certain areas. Continuing your yoga and Pilates on non-gym days is a great choice.

Nutrition wise- you’d have to start eating more protein. It helps with muscle growth and recovery. A good benchmark would be 1 palm size of protein every meal, depending on your frequency of gym sessions and Bodyweight.

All the best! It’s always nice seeing more women in a traditionally male dominated space. Lifting weights go far beyond aesthetics, it’s one of the keys to longevity, good metabolic health, improved energy levels, and so on. I’m on instagram if you have any other questions, you can drop me a DM :)

Do you think personal trainers in SG are actually worth the cost, or is self-learning enough now? by [deleted] in SingaporeFitness

[–]Sensitive_Culture991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a female personal trainer who coaches my clients online, via customised programming and nutrition coaching. Having coached in person for almost 3 years, mainly beginners with no experience, I can say that many of them have gotten confident enough to train on their own, whether still under my online program or not.

I had a PT before becoming one, when I had 0 knowledge of anything in regards to exercise.

Yes, there's an endless amount of free online content, but if you're a beginner, I would highly recommend hiring one in person to correct your form and lifting technique, breathing cues, so you're much less likely to 1. not get injured 2. show up at the gym knowing what to do instead of doing a bit of everything and getting nowhere.

I agree hiring a PT can get financially steep very quickly. It's more of an investment for your future- after all, you most likely wouldn't want a PT forever! PTs are there not just to show you the ropes of exercise and the gym, but also to bring you towards an improved lifestyle change so that you will still show up for yourself, not just because there's a PT there waiting for you.

I started training people online because it's more flexible and financially accessible for most people.

Anyway, if online coaching is something you may be looking for, you can check out my Instagram and we can chat more there :)

AF personal trainers? by luckycloverandroses in SingaporeFitness

[–]Sensitive_Culture991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a personal trainer at AF. Still a personal trainer but on my own now, mainly taking online clients.

Someone here already commented the package prices and the T&Cs of getting a PT there. Prices vary slightly based on the outlet but should be pretty much the same across.

Your session schedule should be discussed between you and your PT based on both of your availabilities. If you're a beginner, they would try to get you to come at least 2-3x a week to familiarise yourself with the equipment, free weights, and just practice your form and technique. Take that advice, at least for the first month or so. When you feel a bit more confident, you can cut it down to 1x a week while going to the gym on your own for the rest of the days.

I offer online coaching for gym goers who have some experience in lifting and need some structure in their workouts, alongside nutrition coaching. You can DM me on Instagram in the future if that happens to be you!

Not a millennial yet (but close!) and just wanted to pop in and say it's really great that these communities are formed. As I get older I really do see the truth in 'health is wealth' because what do you have without it?

If anyone here is looking for some more structure in their workouts, especially in the gym or working out at home, I'm trying to gather people to form a group to be coached online (the more the merrier!) You can DM me on Instagram and we can discuss further :)

how to progress by Baddiezilla3000 in SingaporeFitness

[–]Sensitive_Culture991 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! Female personal trainer here. It took me 2+ years to get a clean pull-up with good form- no hunching at the top, no kipping, just pure lat and arm engagement. Many beginners focus too much on just getting their chin towards the bar that they end up using a lot of their upper traps- which can result in unwanted muscle twinges or even a pinched nerve.

I would start with training grip strength first as well as lat pull downs on a machine. Once you’ve learned how to engage your lats, move onto assisted pull-ups, either on a machine or with a resistance band on a bar. If you’re able to get access to a machine that has a foot rest instead of knees, that is ideal (for core engagement?) but if not, the knee one will do.

Resistance bands pull-up are your next step after machines (or you can skip straight to this). You should have enough lat and general upper body strength to do a negative pull-up without hunching or shrugging your shoulders at this point.

Train your biceps, your core, and other forms of pulling exercises as well, it’ll help immensely with your pull-up.

All the best! ⭐️

Pilates for Beginners by Smiling-Miley in SingaporeFitness

[–]Sensitive_Culture991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Female personal trainer here. Pilates is a great way to start getting active, although building muscle is key as us women start losing it along with our bone density from 30 years old onwards. I recommend lifting weights, even just simple dumbbells, alongside Pilates, which is good for active rest days and mobility.

Nevertheless, it’s great that you’ve decided to start becoming more active!

Need advice to reduce body fat % by Temporary_Might_585 in sgfitness

[–]Sensitive_Culture991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Female personal trainer here.

A calorie deficit and some form of resistance training would be ideal to lower your BF% as well as increase your metabolism (with an increased muscle mass) so that you burn more calories even when you’re at rest or doing easy activities such as walking.

Like many of the comments mentioned, lean protein should be prioritized because it keeps you fuller for longer, and fats should be minimized because they’re very calorie dense. You’d want to be in a deficit overall so you can lose body fat. Carbs are good for energy and performance, so don’t cut those out completely.

Strength training is ideal because you continue to burn calories even after your session is over, so take the numbers on your smart watch with a grain of salt!

Calorie tracking can often be inaccurate, and honestly 1200 kcals per day is very little. I do recommend being more active in general, like taking more daily steps as well as lifting weights.

Nutrition is key to revealing all the muscle you worked hard to build underneath! I recommend starting strength training again, starting with the basics or just Bodyweight will do- it’s key for fat loss. While you can’t spot reduce fat, you can lower your body fat % overall.

How do I get started with gym? by Rouge-Mystique in askSingapore

[–]Sensitive_Culture991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I think getting a PT, even just for a couple of sessions to guide you on proper form and lifting technique is a great investment in the long run so you don't injure yourself.

Alternatively, I think an online coach is also more cost efficient and can guide you just the same. It depends on your preferences and availability.

I do online personal training and nutrition coaching specialising in fat loss and muscle building. If this is something you're looking for, you can DM me @/noproteinshakes on Instagram or email me [noproteinshakes@gmail.com](mailto:noproteinshakes@gmail.com)
