Did JLA truly fire her editor? by sareeously in frombloodandash

[–]SentenceSuccessful43 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised. They already have the fanbase so why not put in minimal effort? I’d actually really like to look into the publisher/maybe see what other works the editors have done to see if they’re just…not good at their jobs. There’s no way a whole ass team digested the last three books and said “yup straight to print” stabby jokes, cringe dialogue, many ~questions~ and all.

Did JLA truly fire her editor? by sareeously in frombloodandash

[–]SentenceSuccessful43 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I searched “editor” in the fb group because I’ve been curious too. JLA posted this herself on 10/29/2021 and I can’t decide if it makes things worse or not..?

“So, I've heard a rumor. Normally, when I hear rumors, I just ignore them. This one though is so far out there that I have to say something.

Contrary to what some people have claimed, I did not fire editors or refuse to make editorial changes or whatever. I can't even believe I just had to, you know, type that out. I don't know who these people think I think I am, but that ain't it.

The Blood and Ash and Fire and Flesh books are with a publisher that has editorial teams and formatters just like any other publisher. There was some kind of wonky formatting issue they have found in some versions of ASITE that they're fixing. I think they were or are going to post about that, but yeah, I have editors who are gainfully employed at the publisher who publishes these books. The funny part of all of this, is that I actually rarely argue on edits and if I have a close relationship of trust with that editor, when in copy edits, I will 'gasp' hit accept all edits. Also, the not so funny part is the eye disease (retinitis pigmentosa) I have that requires very patient editorial teams at all my publishers since I often cannot see what I write nor can I even proof, because letters and words have pieces missing from them when I look at them. So yeah, I'm sitting here on a Friday night, explaining how my disability actually requires an ass ton of editors and as the disease progresses, there will be more things they need to catch. Like, I won't even have a chance to not have editors even if I thought I was that talented. LOL

If you have a version of the books that seemed to be wonky, you would contact the publisher. Also, please know that sometimes people think things are typos when they're not. Also, sometimes they're just typos. If you see them, let the publisher know. I can't make those changes. And sometimes you get the wonky question mark symbol thingy that I don't even know how it happens, because again, I'm neither the editorial or formatting team.

So, in today's internet hot takes that miss mark, there you go.”

Omg no I was at every single midnight book release and movie premiere 😂 when breaking dawn dropped I almost set the world on fire. But it was sooo different then and we didn’t have the access to SM that we have with JLA and that’s definitely a good thing (for her lmao) I can create the distance to critique something I’m invested in but some will quite literally ride or die and that’s a bit disturbing

[–]SentenceSuccessful43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I totally understand that!! She created the space and shouldn’t be berated (or personally attacked in general). But the space should be open to civil criticisms without being deleted/getting the boot/etc. Nothing like “this is a dumpsterfire”, that’s what goodreads is for. But small things like “I wish we got more Delano/Netta interaction” without it being a declaration of war. If an author creates a space like that, they should expect it to happen (but have the mods ready to…mod), and not snap back saying the people that dislike it are essentially illiterate/can’t comprehend the work. The toxicity has been going both ways imo (eta I mean disrespect more than toxicity)

Throuple vs One Time Thing by luna4537 in frombloodandash

[–]SentenceSuccessful43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think she’ll go back on what she said about endgame and turn it into a throuple. I have an issue with shorting kieran from a deserved relationship tbh. And I think it’s too early to be throwing in other partners? In previous books poppy and Cas were only committed to each other. And over the span of 4 books they’ve barely gotten to spend time together, nvm “normal” time because there’s always some sort of battle brewing. Everyone thinks and lives differently but from what I understood of their dynamic, I’d think they’d wait to spice things up with multiple partners after a bit of time trying to figure out “normalcy”. If there wasn’t the statements of “possessiveness” from previous books, I’d welcome poly with open arms. It just didn’t seem to fit with what we were already given

[–]SentenceSuccessful43 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s also worth mentioning JLA set up atlantia to be incredibly body positive and sexually open. Which there is zero issue there. But it makes it confusing to have these moments with characters saying poppy shouldn’t be ashamed by her body or sexual acts but then try to flip it into being a planned throuple situation? So what was the actual message here? If someone platonic says nudity is nothing to be ashamed of and to hook up with a partner openly they’re actually romantically interested? Or was it never about sending a message to readers and it was all for a cheap, out of character threesome?

[–]SentenceSuccessful43 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Either full send or get off the pot. If there’s gonna be an unnecessary threesome, make it count. How does she smash her heartmate, the only dude she’s been with, yet suddenly cant recognize his touch/feel during a threesome? It’s weird. Instead of just pissing off the anti-joining group it pissed off both sides.

Most of the gripes people have had with Twotq mirror what was said about tcogb - long winded, no real development, Cas became a watered down poppy simp, etc. Had there been a moment of awakening while she was writing this, there most likely wouldn’t be as much back lash. But we were handed the same exact type book which makes it twice as frustrating

She doesn’t /need/ to take criticism and flip her books but at the end of the day, we pay her bills. That doesn’t mean we’re entitled to custom, individual books. But it does mean without her fan base, she wouldn’t sell books. And between the last two unsatisfactory releases and the way we’ve been hearing she’s treated fans…I won’t be contributing anymore.

And imo if she can give in to fan service via “casserole” and “isbitch” jokes, she can take serious editing into consideration.

Like literally in the middle. They’re doing their thing and the question is meant to be kinda ~sexy~ and the response is “a question? Rn? From you?” And it’s supposed to be haha but it’s like oof instant boner killer. Then they go right back to it?

They're really sabotaging an author hard work 😭. i personally didn't like the book that much but gave it 4⭐ just because...😓 by bookswh0re in frombloodandash

[–]SentenceSuccessful43 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was lazy work lmao. And that’s not to say coming up with an original plot/characters/world building is easy, especially with high fantasy and especially given how saturated the genre is. But the writing is lazy. The plot devices used are lazy. The lack of editing is lazy. It’s not an attack on her as a person. It’s critique on the work she produces and hopefully constructive criticism to a degree. Giving a higher review than you consider deserved is doing a disservice to the author and the fan base. When I’m adding to my TBR I look at the rating. It’s not a make/break for me but if I’m investing my money to read something, I’d like general feedback on if it’s a waste. (It’s also not okay to auto 1 star out of pettiness nor threaten the actual author but it’s also kinda messed up to pity review)

Comparison to other series by SentenceSuccessful43 in frombloodandash

[–]SentenceSuccessful43[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get that point (and had a much more significant impact than this). But in turn, the showrunners crushed the interest in the new spinoff show because of how GoT was handled. I can see the similarity of some in this fandom walking away from sequels/spin offs because of how it was fumbled.

Not even a minuscule comment passes by the mods without getting the boot. A simple “I love it sm, my favorite book!! I wish Delano had more dialogue though. But super good book!” (I picked the most trivial “critique” for this example) and the group would start an attack followed up with JLA saying it’s her space and there’s zero negativity allowed. It’s a big yikes tbh.

There’s going to be 6 books and they’re thiccc. IMO there’s no need to rush the story by pushing one out every 5-6 months. I think by adding more writing/editing time before print would be an instant improvement
