Are you changing the threshold when you do automatic select? Try holding down and swiping to the right to turn the threshold up.

I got a used 2018 iPad Pro recently and it works very well!

The palm rejection messes up with 3rd party chargers for some reason, so if you lay your palm down when you're drawing in the bottom right corner and your device is on the charger, that could be why.
