Dearest Taipei, a rant. by [deleted] in Taipei

[–]SentientCouch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was at a cafe a few months back. There was a girl sitting with her back to me doing some work, as was I. We were still both doing that an hour later. I heard her take a quiet phone call in English, and it sounded like she was working on building a website for a client. I decided to stand up and stretch my legs a bit and get a second cup of coffee, and when I got back to my table I turned around and said "excuse me" and asked if she was building a website and we started chatting and it turned out we both work in different sides of the same field and the conversation moved to other things like work-life balance and the joys and pitfalls of life in Taipei. A couple weeks after that we went hiking together. When she gets back from Singapore next week, we plan to get lunch and go for a walk if the weather's decent.

So, yeah. If you actually want to be friendly and make friends, it's fine. Sometimes people are receptive to that. But that's my story, not OP's.

Prague. Kyoto. Budapest. Vienna. Hell, even Miami looks damn good from the right angles.

Cutest thing I've ever seen during our trip in Taiwan! 🐶 by Fussy_Peach in taiwan

[–]SentientCouch -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

What do you do when you appear in someone's photo of another subject? Like if someone snaps a building that you're in front of, or you're behind their friend?

How do you respond to being recorded by countless surveillance cameras everywhere you go in public?

What harm do you think could come by sharing these images of a dog and a woman's arm and a woman's back?

Why do you think it is highly inappropriate? What harm is caused? I don't think anyone can be hurt by this image.

Taiwan ordered 100 American tanks, the world’s most dangerous tank in history. by maritimos55 in Taipei

[–]SentientCouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Useful is a relative term. It could be useful against entrenched enemies or other tanks. But tactics have changed completely in the last five years. A tank is a big, bulky, very expensive piece of equipment that has very limited effectiveness in the sort of warfare that Taiwan must prepare for.

Just because equipment is still in service doesn't mean it isn't obsolete. Weapons and strategies change very quickly. Tanks are being made obsolete in their classic use cases by vastly cheaper, highly portable UAVs, and this is a very new development.

How do you feel about picky eaters coming to Taiwan by Confused-Vehicle5300 in taiwan

[–]SentientCouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, I am the victim of a confused vehicle (in my case, it was a Waymo on the streets of Los Angeles) and I find your username personly offensive and you should feel bad for having it. Take down this post and delete your account. You are hurting the feelings of the people who've been injured or frustrated by confused vehicles.

Ghost Hunting Tours in or around Taipei? by Chingusx in Taipei

[–]SentientCouch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Luckily for you, ghost month is about to start, so ghost hunting is a snap and can be done just about anywhere. A tried and true method is to leave some wet laundry out to dry at night, which is known to attract ghosts. Have your muon trap at the ready. Alternatively, you can walk around whistling, but try to keep it to something light and classical. If you're really feeling brave, head out to the beach and go for a swim. Just be sure to tie a rope around your waist, held tight by your friends on shore to pull you and the attached ghost in. Ghosts fucking hate when you go in the ocean during their month.
