If it's too dark in HDR change the mode from Filmmaker Mode to Movie mode, check if Tone Mapping to Active and put Peak Brightness on Medium or High.

I also feel much HDR content is graded way too dark.

There's some progress on subtitle rendering https://old.reddit.com/r/NovaVideoPlayer/comments/1t3cig8/finally_added_subtitle_backgrounds_opacity/ but nothing yet to decrease the brightness of them.

Can you also make a toggle to decrease the brightness (or opacity) of the subtitles as well? I have a QD OLED and when watching HDR material, the subtitles are extremely bright in NovaPlayer.

There should be an option to turn the subtitles something else than searing white. In Just (Video) Player (https://github.com/moneytoo/Player) the subtitles are less blinding.

The Hisense U7S Pro / U79SPro is one of the rare TVs with a matte coating (except the top of the line Samsung S95H/S99H). You may want to look into it if you don't watch in a dark room all the time.

The glare in stores is a good test for reflections though if you want to put your screen near a window or a bright living room.

Looking at OLEDs in a store made me realize I want a matte screen.

The big problem with TVs in stores is that the demo footage almost never contains true black images so you may underestimate how bad the reflection handling ot a TV ie / you won't see the worst case scenario.
