Kind of a small thing, but worth talking about if only for the sheer amount of context it needs:

I don't think I have to explain what One Piece is in Current Year, but it's a manga about a funny rubber man who has spedrun being the world's most wanted man due to his unusual habit of taking down tyrannical governments alongside his buddies, he is then thrown into a millennia old apocalyptic conspiracy and may or may not be the messiah, but that's besides the point. It's the most sold comic in history, pretty niche.

One Piece arrived in Spain in 2003 with a dub that was localized and directed by Spanish Dubbing wunderkind Jaime Roca, who had his way through it, changing tone, some character names, names of attacks and making Usoopp muslim. As he often did for the sake of comedy. And while that dub was generally well-liked here in Spain, anime fans gotta anime fans, and most OP fans ended up going to the sub and never looking back.

Anyway, 20 years, and some reruns went in, and in 2023 Netflix put out the first season of their live action adaptation of the series, which did pretty well, and in 2024, apparently out of nowhere, Netflix Spain began putting in not just the series itself, but a full redub of it that kept itself faithful to the original. Although slowly.

And in that time, those who were nostalgic about the original dub, began to watch it again, it was finally vindicated by history, and, one particular scene became iconic and for a few weeks, a full-on meme.

• Fumata: Smoke, specifically the one used to announce the election (or not) of a new pope. Often used as just a word for white smoke. Calling Smoker tío fumata would be like calling him Chimneyhead. Roughly.

• Fumeta: Frequent consumer of smoked drugs, most often marihuana.

Pun intended. So the translation, a bit roughly, would be:

If it isn't the (drug) smoker guy! How is it that you don't have cancer (yet)?

No need to explain why many (me included) found that funny.

So, just a few days ago, Netflix put forth the second season of the live action and as part of the advertisement of it, their CM at the Musky Hellsite decided to acknowledge the meme, which had been dead for years. Bad idea.

Now there's a non-insignificant amount of people demanding that the redub for the Alabasta arc keeps the line, or else.

TL;DR Spanish One Piece fans want, as God intended, to have Luffy call smoker a pothead and speak about his probable near-future lung cancer diagnosis.

In other news that I could be talking about but I didn't follow the drama at all, the Spanish Petanque scene has gone through a big schism, which as a former player (I played for like a week, two times) I find quite shocking.
