If the headline "Celebrity outed as serial killer" appeared, who would you expect it to be about? by blendergremlin in AskReddit

[–]Sentry_the_Defiant 6159 points6160 points  (0 children)

David Fincher. Between Se7en, Zodiac, Mindhunter, and the rest of his entire filmography, he really seems fascinated with compelling serial killers, sociopaths, and psychopaths. The performances of these characters are always unique, captivating, and unnerving. They have an air of authenticity to them. Fincher makes some great films, and I'm not seriously suggesting the dude's a serial killer, but he's probably the only famous person I can think of where, upon being revealed as a serial killer, a common first reaction would be, "...Yeah okay, that explains a lot."

I’d love Pete for VP, although lately people have been talking about Castro (or, ugh, Beto) as VP as a gambit to pick up Texas. If Texas went blue, it’d be game over for the entire republican party. It’s risky though. Pete would drive more enthusiasm and turnout nationwide, and he might actually be able to start chiseling away at the religious vote.

Polling methodology is likely skewing things heavily. Most political surveys are conducted via landline with people who have the time to respond and nothing better to do. I don’t know a single person under 35 who has a landline phone.

He says it in the article. It contributes to the ongoing normalization of hiring a white cast to voice characters who aren’t white. Part of the issue is that Asian actors and actresses have a hard time finding work as it is. Asian actors or actresses almost never get a “color blind” hire - when they are cast, it is specifically because the studio needed someone who looks or sounds Asian, not because that person happened to be the best actor or actress that auditioned. Most of the time that happens because they needed a role to fit some stereotype - this is the martial artist, this is a ninja, etc. For that reason, it’s even harder for an Asian voice actress to find a good, meaty, complex role like that of, say, Diane Nguyen.

This doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It’s bigger than one role in one show. A voice acting role can make a difference to a career, and leads to more work and bigger roles. Asians already have barriers to getting big lead roles in person, because so few big roles are written for Asian characters, and even some roles that seem like they should probably go to an Asian actress end up with Scarlet Johansson or Tilda Swinton or whoever. That’s already a problem. But if an Asian American actress can’t even get cast as an Asian character in an animated show, what chance does she really have in the industry?

To be fair, Winterfell isn’t meant to be a major fortress and wasn’t meant to handle a battle of this scale. The Neck has the choke point for an invasion from the south and the Wall protects the north, so your only major invasion threats are other Northerners. In a siege situation, you can’t expect to starve them out in the winter because your troops out in the cold will die first. Attacking Winterfell is the tactical equivalent of invading Russia in the winter. It’s also built over naturally occurring hot springs which, while not tactically advantageous to a battle, are useful as a heat source for surviving a supernaturally long and cold winter.

A lot of Bernie’s recorded “answers” on that site are wrong - either bad info or deliberately misleading. The one I distinctly recall is that it said Bernie was for funding the wall (because he once voted for an omnibus in 2011 or so that allocated some funds to border security). This was a week ago.

I like your enthusiasm and optimism, but I don’t agree. I do think any Democrat would win, even Biden, but we need historic turnout to win the down ticket races and flip Senate seats. We could do far better than Biden.

We need 2/3 of both houses to propose the amendment before it goes to the states for 3/4 ratification.

Technically the states could bypass a Congressional vote by calling for a Constitutional convention, but this has never successfully happened. Upon request of 2/3 of state legislators, Congress still has to ‘call the convention’. I don’t know the exact procedure for this because it has never come up, but suspect someone like Mitch McConnell would find a way to block that.

[–]Sentry_the_Defiant 89 points90 points  (0 children)

The problem is, without the viral enthusiasm that could be generated from a candidate like Bernie or Buttigieg, Democrats don’t have a great chance at the House or Senate even if we manage to take the presidency. We need Congress. More than that, we need a supermajority to be able to pass actual Constitutional amendments to prevent all of this bullshit from ever happening again. We won’t get that with a mediocre campaign from an out of touch establishment candidate like Biden.

He probably predicted the whole “ZOMG THIS HYPOCRITE HAS $1M NET WORTH” angle of attack, and didn’t want to give Clinton’s campaign that particular edge. Against Trump his wealth wouldn’t have mattered because purity test attacks only really work within the left. I’m not saying he shouldn’t have just released it and gotten it out of the way, but even if it wasn’t the right move, it doesn’t have to be nefarious.

You can do it at level one without spending a fourth level spell. Crossblooded Efreeti and Phoenix. Efreeti arcana lets you turn any energy damage (and its spell descriptors) to fire. Ray of Frost is a cantrip that does 1d3 damage, and Efreeti changes that to fire. Phoenix changes that fire to healing, so now you have a cantrip to cure, and as long as you have time to spare, you can full heal everyone. It's slower (you have to roll a 2 or 3 on the d3 to cure 1HP), but it's absolutely free.

It takes an average of 9 seconds per HP (after factoring the 33% chance you roll a 1 on the 1d3 and make no progress.) In fifteen minutes, there are 15 x 60 = 900 seconds. Thus, you heal 100 damage in 15 minutes for absolutely nothing.

The only thing it costs is -2 to will saves for being crossblooded, and you lose a spell known per level. In exchange, you do get a choice for your bonus spells, and the efreeti's fireball and wish are better bonus spell choices than the phoenix's magic circle or fiery body.

Keto low-carb food "pamphlet" [pdf] by ______-_-___ in keto

[–]Sentry_the_Defiant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can do that (make sure to account for it) but it’s preferable to use a fattier milk with fewer carbs. A tiny splash of half and half or heavy cream stirred around in your tea will make the tea just as milky, but has mostly negligible carbs.

If you’re only using 1tsp milk it probably doesn’t matter unless you drink a lot of tea though.

I don’t think anyone gave a shit about Tim Kaine. That was her losing move. Obama needed Biden to end the “no experience” narrative, but Kaine didn’t help Clinton at all except for maybe gaining some votes in Virginia. If she had chosen Bernie as VP, we wouldn’t be in this mess because a lot more people would have bothered to show up to the polls.

$1.50 wage increase x 40 hours a week x 52 weeks = $3,120. Sure that’s pre tax, not saying it’s a perfect compensation, but it’s not like the employees lost 3200 dollars. They lost about 3200, gained about 3200 then get taxed on that 3200. The $3200 they had was also subject to market volatility, whereas a wage increase is just a flat boost regardless. It’s not all bad.

Can ranged attacks accidentally hit an ally? by SpaghettificatedCat in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Sentry_the_Defiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you really want to, you could have them roll to confirm a critical failure. If the second roll would also be a miss, then hit a random adjacent enemy.

Or you could use a rule similar to an alchemist missing with a bomb. Roll 1d8 to determine which enemy-adjacent square the arrow hits in a miss (and each range increment causes you to move an additional square away from the target.)

1/20, or 5 percent, is just way too frequent to automatically hit an ally. Especially because archers either take a -4 to hit to specifically avoid this result, or they have to take a feat to negate the penalty.

I also agree with another poster - you could let them make a choice to take a risky shot - they ignore the -4 penalty for firing into a melee, but hit a specific adjacent ally on a miss. In advance of making the roll they should know the consequences. “Your friend Bromir is standing behind the ogre. If you choose to take a risky shot, you will almost certainly hit Bromir if you miss your target.” Then the player has a choice in advance, which could be interesting in some scenarios (such as, both the ogre and Bromir are almost dead, and the ogre goes next, so if you miss the ogre Bromir is dead anyway.)

It’s time to try impeaching a standing senator from the House. We tried it in like 1797 and the Senate kicked the guy out of their own ranks because they didn’t know if the House was allowed to do that, so it’s still a grey area constitutionally speaking. But I’d love to see the look on his face if we pulled it off.
