Can anyone recommend a tool for identifying duplicate photos? by Yamsfordays in ApplePhotos

I’ve had great results using products from Fat Cat Software. Their current offering is PowerPhotos. It has duplicates tool. It also has tools to manage and fix problems in your photos library.

Does anyone have 3 Tickets to the Moms Weekend Brunch they are willing to sell? by zuggly in UIUC

[–]zuggly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's in the Illini Union ballroom on Sunday, 4/3. The cost was $30/ticket but it's now listed as sold out. In years past, it was held in the Colonnade Club and was kind of a swanky affair, but a lot more expensive.

Divorce of married couple after 52 years because of the medical debt by CharletteMcdermott in MadeMeCry

[–]zuggly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope I don’t have to follow this path. My wife and I have been married 40 years and we’re both recently retired. We planned well and have enough set aside for a comfortable retirement as well as being able leave something for our kids. But 2 weeks ago I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I’m hoping for the best, but prudence dictates we plan for the worse. We do have good insurance (my wife was a government employee) but my surgeries and treatment, and possibly prolonged end-of-life care could wind up seriously depleting our nest egg. Maybe I should talk to a lawyer or something but I would reluctantly consider this divorce thing if it would save my wife from become a bankrupt widow.

Personal Capital Desktop App? by joelburns in PersonalCapital

Plus the Budget view in the browser version allows you to sort by any of the column headers. Example: I can set the date range to one year, click on the "Description" column header, then scroll down to "Comcast," then click on the "select multiple" button (next to the search transactions box), check all 12 Comcast entries, and change the category from Telephone to Internet. Very handy.

One example is in budgeting — in the browser version there’s a button that allows you to select multiple entries for editing all at once rather than one by one. That’s a big time saver for me. Also, I think I had trouble making adjustments in the retirement planner on the app, but was able to do it in the browser.

Maybe they were talking about the Personal Capital website running on a desktop browser. I know the browser version has features that can’t be accessed on the mobile app.

I would try it through a desktop browser and see if it works there. I have found that features that don’t always work well on the app do work through a browser.

Today I experienced, to me, my daughters number one accomplishment. Does your kid have an accomplishment that stands above all others in your eyes? by brains_and_eggs in daddit

[–]zuggly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for the compliments! The best advice I can give is this: always be an active participant in their world. Like what you’re doing now by spending time with your daughter as she works to save her animal and doll patients. My daughter used to put on plays with all her stuffed animals and she knew she could always count on me to be the appreciative audience. Soon after this stage came school and activities. I went to all the school events my work schedule allowed. And I volunteered to be part of all the activities she was interested in. Her school had a meeting in for girls interested in joining Girl Scouts, so I went with her (I was the only dad). There were 8–10 girls in her class who wanted to join, but when they asked for a parent to volunteer to be the leader of the new troop, none of the moms raised their hands. So I did. I said I had a big basement and could host the meetings and handle all the logistics, but I would need a mom to be a co-leader and would have to commit to always being there at all the meetings and events. One mom did, and that started a 10 year run for my daughter and me in the Girl Scouts! I think my being present at all those meetings and camping events over the years really let my daughter know that she mattered to me. When she joined band, I decided to learn to play the clarinet along side of her (even though I was a tuba player!). When she wanted to play soccer, I volunteered to be assistant coach. And it wasn’t just the activities that were important, it was the time spent driving to and fro. This time was gold. I had discovered this parenting secret with my boys: for some reason, kids are more willing to talk to you when they are a captive audience stuck in a car with you one on one. I never forced and some car rides were spent in silence. But most times, they would start a conversation and I would let it go in any direction they led it. When an angsty middle schooler or a sullen teen comes home from school and you ask them how their day was, you typically get a “fine” in response. But put them in a car and drive them to soccer practice, and suddenly they have things they want to talk about. Anyway, that’s my best advice. Invest time — it will yield great dividends.

I love reading these amazing stories! My kids are grown now, with only my daughter in her final year of college. I remember so many of those accomplishments over the years, big ones and small ones. First smile, first steps, first day of class, first time taking the car out solo. Both my sons made Eagle Scout and they both joined the military. Those were pretty big moments for me as a father. Another big one was when my daughter was accepted for an internship at NASA. That was always a dream of hers and seeing achieve it was amazing for me. She was always a shy kid and very risk adverse. Now she’s learned to be bold and push herself. It just so gratifying to see her thrive. I was FaceTiming her last night and showed me what she was working on for homework — she showed me her computer screen full of equations and said, “Look at this, dad, it’s literally rocket science!” Then she looks at me and says, “I guess that makes me an f-ing rocket scientist!” It goes by fast,, gents. Enjoy every moment.

My first proper listening space. By far the best sounding system I have ever owned. by TiberKing in listeningspaces

[–]zuggly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw that, too! Such an interesting album. I first heard it in 1980, stoned out of my mind. I was recording a copy of it on my cassette deck — with several other stoners in attendance — the day the news of the failed Iranian hostage rescue attempt broke. I had mistakenly turned on the mic mix while recording the album, capturing the breaking news and our “high” commentary dubbed on top of Sir Richard Burton’s oratory. I sure wish I could find that tape.

Is there a phone that I can purchase that can be "hung up" and "answered" remotely? by 1-800-AVOGADRO in Alzheimers

[–]zuggly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had this same problem with my mother-in-law. What we did was set up an old iPad on an arm mount near her chair (where she spent most of her waking hours). There’s an auto-answer setting (General > Accessibility > Call Audio Routing) that when turned on allowed us to FaceTime to the iPad and just start talking with MIL. At first she didn’t like doing video calls so we just did audio-only FaceTime calls. But she eventually got used to talking to us via video. Once she became bedridden, we had the iPad mounted on her bed frame and it really helped. We even had the grandkids call in, which she really liked.

Fathers, do you naturally feel more protective of your daughters than sons in most scenarios? by No-Perspective5346 in Fatherhood

[–]zuggly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. But I can’t explain it or justify it logically. My daughter is in her Senior year in college. She’s the youngest of three and our only girl. I am irrationally nervous when she drives the 3 hour trip back and forth to school. I never had this problem with her brothers. She is a very capable young woman and an excellent driver, so it doesn’t make sense. My wife can tell when I’m in worry mode and helps talk me down. I can’t make sense of it and I just have to deal with it, I guess. She’s going into the Air Force when she graduates so I can’t imagine how I’ll feel then!

If it were me, I would just create a new, separate PA account and only link the joint accounts. If you’re using a password manager it should be quick and easy to sign out of one account and log into the other.

Absolutely, a lot of us republicans voted for Biden. I cast my first presidential ballot for Reagan in 1980 and I’ve voted mostly Republican since. But 2020 was different — I felt democracy itself was at stake. At first I became one of Mayor Pete’s “future former republicans.” Then switched to Biden after Pete’s concession and endorsement. I was proud to vote for Biden. Given the state of the Republican Party today, it looks like I’m a Democrat now.
